The Code of Oregon provides for such [constructive] service when an action is brought against a non-resident and absent defendant, who has property within the State. It also provides, where the action is for the recovery of money or damages, for the attachment of the property of the non resident. And it also declares that no natural person is subject to the jurisdiction of a court of the State, "unless he appear in the court, or be found within the State, or be a resident thereof, or have property therein; and, in the last case, only to the extent of such property at the time the jurisdiction attached." Construing this latter provision to mean that, in an action for money or damages where a defendant does not appear in the court, and is not found within the State, and is not a resident thereof, but has property therein, the jurisdiction of the court extends only over such property, the declaration expresses a principle of general, if not universal, law.
Imagine this going on for 10 pages.

Wouldn't you know it. My favorite comic just happens to be a lawyer joke today. |

Yesterday, was pretty much a wash. We didn't actually do anything of importance at ALL. You can probably glean that from the schedule I posted below.
Today, things got much more interesting.
We first had to sit through a lecture about how psychologically maladjusted lawyers are generally speaking (no joke!) and what steps we need to take to prevent ourselves from turning either to alcohol or other self-inflicted miseries later in our careers.
The other two classes (for which we had homework) gave us an introduction to what we will be doing from now on. Since they only meet during the first week, there are no grades involved. Thus, it gives us an opportunity to practice being law students without the pressure of worrying about grades. Both were fabulous! Right now, I couldn't be happier that I have chosen to do this. I can already tell that it is going to be extremely taxing academically, but also extremely interesting - which makes up for all the hard work.
P.S. - Don't expect this to be a regular thing. I'm pretty sure that readership of this blog would drop off dramatically if I only talk about what goes on at school.
Now, back to the regularly scheduled inane levity to which you have become accustomed. |

There was an enchanter named Tim
Who threw fireballs just on a whim
His nice house in town
Burned quite to the ground
Thus his outlook on life grew most grim.
See, Isn't that nice? Congrats to April for picking up the bonus points. Had it not been for those Nathan would have won on creativity. Shane gets honorable mention for posting a pretty good one (though not a limerick) and then deleting it.
And, in case anyone wonders, She did win a prize of questionable value. But don't bother looking on her blog because no one else can see it. So there:P
I've been getting a lot of questions as to what I will be doing in my first semester of law school.
Here's a look at my calendar for this week:
Fortunately, it does get better thereafter.
It's a 15 hour load. I had zero control over either the classes or the times. This apparently won't change until the second half of my second year.
Deep breath. Tomorrow's the day.
