my cousin lei-anne called me this morning to let me know that an old friend of mine had passed away. gary was such a special person. he was a medic in the vietnam war, and while there he stepped on a land mine that caused him to lose his arm and just about destroyed his hip. i suspect to this day he could still find shrapnel pieces coming to the surface of his body.he had lots and lots of health problems because of his injuries, as one might expect but you would really never know it from talking to him. he was a counselor at my aunt and uncle's camp (rustic youth camp) for many many years. he "wrangled" the boys and girls two weeks out of every year and they loved him dearly. he won favorite counselor several times and was always so humble in receving it.he had such a wonderful influence on not just the kids at camp, but their parents and friends. the parents and friends of his own children and anyone he came in contact with. my heart is saddened to know he isn'...

When the nightSeems to sayAll hope is lostGone awayBut I knowI'm not aloneBy the lightShe standsThere she wavesFaithful friendShimmering starsWestward windShow the wayCarry meTo the placeShe standsJust when you think it might be overJust when you think the fight is goneSomeone will risk his life to raise herThere she standsThere she fliesClear blue skiesReminds us with redOf those that diedWashed in whiteBy the graveIn their strengthShe standsWhen evil calls itself a martyrWhen all your hopes come crashing downSomeone will pull her from the rubbleThere she standsWe've seen her flying torn and tatteredWe've seen her stand the test of timeAnd through it all the fools have fallenThere she standsBy the dawn'sEarly lightAnd through the fightShe standslyrics by michael w. smith

the king: the lion and the lamb

craig hearn from north carolina is at jordan park this week speaking at our series of gospel meetings. he has preached three wonderful sermons and last night's especially stirred me to write this post."and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals." And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth."Revelation 5:5-6 (New American Standard Bible)it is intriguing to me how in these two verses we see what would seem to be two completely opposite descriptions of our Lord. in verse 5, he is the "Lion that is from the tribe of Judah" and in verse 6 "a Lamb standing, as if slain". how can this be? how can Jesus be both a Lion and a Lamb?we can then look at rom...
