We conference from 8 am to 10pm at night....long hours...no sleep. Afterward we have to caucus with other international representatives to get any resolutions passed. Tonight at 6pm my resolution will go to the floor for a vote. I am serving on the Third Committee of the General Assemble for Human Rights. My resolution has to do with Juvenile Rights within the Justice System, especially those in the developing world. In many nations juveniles are housed with adult offenders and there is little done to cater to their specific needs. I've been able to get Russia, Serbia, Nicaragua, Uganda and a few other nations to co-sponsor it with me. Our position is that there needs to be a significant training program created to train judges, lawyers, case workers, police and parole officers as well as prison personnel in how to deal with juvenile offenders. They can vote against child healthcare, education reform and welfare supplements. They are in favor of trying children as adults in the court system, the death penalty, and going to war just to save a dollar on gas, but heaven forbid a woman who is raped to have an abortion. Why is it that to be a Christian means you can only be a Republican? Frankly the Republican Party is looking more and more like the Pharisee from Luke 18 and less like the Man who washes the feet of His followers.
