stormy weather

So the other night I finished reading Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson (author of The Devil in the White City, a fascinating look at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and America's first serial killer). Isaac's Storm is about the 1900 Galveston hurricane.Wow. Absolutely fascinating, and Erik Larson's my new favorite history writer. The section where he describes being in the middle of the storm was probably one of the most vividly terrifying accounts of a true story I've ever read.Anyway, he mentions the Rosenberg Library in Galveston as his best source for material, and from their website I found the Galveston and Texas History Center website that has a ton of photos to add to the story.Highly recommend both the book and the center's website.Incidentally, there are also interesting photos from Ike cleanup on the Galveston Historical Foundation website.

Off the Grid

Lord willing, my plane leaves for Denver at 7am tomorrow morning, and Pop and I both get in around 9:30. YAY!!! I can't WAIT!Not quite sure all the things we'll do, but I'm definitely looking forward to spending time with my dad, learning more about Denver, seeing REAL mountains, and enjoying crisp Western weather. I heart The West. Blame it on the myth and mystique that's permeated the American culture for the past two decades, but I just love it.WOOHOO!!-*-*-In other news, the fridge now only has stuff in it that's a week or less old. Not 6 weeks or less old. Now the counter has stuff that is 6 weeks or less old. I hope the dishwasher doesn't take too long.

And now....

It is T minus 62 hours until I get to see Pop in Denver! YAY!!!! (And he's sick right now with a cold, so prayers for him to feel better--for his own sake--would be appreciated :)And now, the question of the hour: should I or should I not? (clean out the fridge, that is. Including the pot of chili that's been in there over a month. heehee.)I recently learned about a tasty apple variety: Stayman. They're red with thick skin, white crisp flesh, and a sweet-sour flavor. MY FAVORITE KIND!!! Well, braeburn are my favorite, and this reminds me of a sweeter version. Yum.Also, if you happen to be stressing over the election today, my recommendation is to turn off the TV and go do something else. After all, at the end of the day (hopefully) the result will be the same, whether you were glued to the telly and worrying yourself silly or not. :) (You may not be stressing out, in which case, it's your decision :)
