Veteran's Day

Can't help but think of John Partin and Andrew Dahlquist today -- two WWII veterans with whom I worshiped in Baytown for 12 years. On Saturday, Lord willing, the final home game of Auburn's season will occur -- against the Dawgs!! Should be quite a game. Auburn needs one more win to become bowl eligible. Of course, there's always the Alabama game in a couple of weeks. Perhaps, the Tigers have saved their best for last...we shall see.

Now That That's Over

* Meetings finished for 2008 (Tony needs rest).* Sheli's high school volleyball career is over (Brett starts basketball).* Barack O'bama will soon be President (pray for him).* Football season is winding down (could Texas Tech really win the BCS?? Utah/TCU is a big game tonight. Go UTES!)* Auburn's bowl hopes have vanished (Saturday's homecoming pancake breakfast is something to look forward to and perhaps yet another bowl bid for Kentucky?!?).

To Another College Town

Gearing up for the delayed trip to College Station (thanks to IKE) and my last gospel meeting of '08 (starts 26th-29th). I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends and preaching to many college students, as I get to do each week here in Auburn.Sheli will be playing her last high school volleyball games this week and Brett begins basketball practice and will attempt to get his driving permit on his 15th birthday Tuesday.

Dismal Season

The last two Saturdays, Kentucky and Auburn have lost back to back. Since major bowl possibilities can now be ruled out, along with my continued loyalty to AU and UK, I will also jump on the bandwagons of Texas and Utah. How about Jordan Shipley (TX wide receiver), being named national college player of the week this past week? I know his granddad and 2 uncles...fine men and Texans all! Hook'em Horns! I'm hoping for a Texas/Florida BCS National Championship Game. And my Dad called today to tell me that Kentucky basketball has signed a top-notch big man for the 2009 season thanks to Bill Self of Kansas who was out of scholarships, so he encouraged him to go play for his friend Gillespie. Now, I'm really glad I was cheering for Kansas and Self against Memphis earlier this year.

The Utah Utes & Brian Johnson

Brett and I have followed the career of Brian Johnson, the quarterback of Utah. He is now a fifth-year senior, and his Utes are 6-0, ranked #15 in the country and moving up next week after a 31-28 thriller over Oregon State last night (yes, the Oregon State who beat USC last week). The reason we have kept an eye on Brian Johnson is we watched him play quarterback for the Baytown Lee Ganders after Drew Tate had graduated and began his college career at Iowa. Johnson was a double-threat to either pass or run and I knew he could potentially be successful at a place like Utah. I remember vividly that Gander team was one of the best, even better than the Tate-led teams, but lost in the playoffs after squandering a 14-0 halftime lead.Anyway, the Crosby/Baytown kid is having quite a ride now and I hope they go undefeated.

I Just Needed A New Post, That's All

Sermons Sunday:AM -- "Coming Into His Presence"(how our thoughts of God affect our response to Him)PM -- "God Bless America"(going political this week as I discuss the role Christians can play in government, and more importantly, in our world as we let our lights shine)More football on Saturday...Tennessee Volunteers are coming to Auburn. Getting back on the right track this week! Could this be Fulmer's last year in Rocky Top? I'm also predicting a 31-14 victory for Georgia over Alabama.

You Knew It Was Time...

The SEC now has 5 of the top 10 ten positions in the AP poll. At least one will be exiting this weekend -- either LSU or Auburn. I'm sooooo looking forward to the game Saturday night. And I'm going to say it now... the Auburn offense will show a different side this Saturday. I'm not guaranteeing a lot of points or a victory necessarily (the LSU defense is stout like ours) but I think we will see some better things and Kodi Burns on the field some. Also, the Lee-Scott volleyball team is improving by leaps and bounds. It seems every individual player has taken their game to a higher level including the role players. I'm so glad Sheli is enjoying this season with her new teammates. She is playing middle, a new position for her, but is starting to get the hang of it. We have a tough opponent on Thursday night, however. That should reveal a lot.

IKE!

Thankfully, my meeting in College Station has been postponed for six weeks, but my greater concern now is the many people I know in Ike's path...family, brethren and friends. Though still a Category 2 storm, the only solace is slightly lower wind speeds than in a 3, 4 or 5 storm. The scary thing with this storm is the WATER! The storm surge and waves on the coast will likely top 20 to 25 feet. That's devastating. My old house in Baytown was only 26 feet above sea level. Many parts of Baytown are far less. Power for thousands will be lost for probably days. What captures my attention with this storm, in contrast to many others I've watched, is its massive nature and huge width. This will mean a larger number of people severely affected by landfall tonight and tomorrow. This could be one of the most devastating storms in the history of the Houston metro area, exceeding Alicia in 1983 and rivaling Carla in 1961. Everyone in southeast Texas and especially brethren, you are in our...

The Palin Effect

What a phenomenon really! Here's the scenario...the Democratic Party fails to nominate Hillary as their candidate for President. Obama fails to select Hillary as his VP. All of this opens the door for McCain to introduce Palin as VP. Palin is talented and is embraced by more people than any other politician of our day. And with a lack of any real ammunition against her, many DEMS across the land are just spewing hate and it's backfiring! Why the foolish attacks? Because Palin is a much bigger threat to the whole Democratic Party than John McCain, and they have no one to blame but themselves. What has happened since the introduction of Palin a couple of weeks ago is truly remarkable.

Generalizations

A few remarked about the "LAWYER/POLITICIAN" comment in my previous post. My point is, that this is the kind of candidate that the DEMS have run out in most of the elections in my lifetime. In contrast, the Republicans have done so only once in the past few decades...Gerald Ford (and he would likely not have been the candidate had it not been for Nixon's and Agnew's woes).Generalizations have their place. It doesn't mean that everyone who would fall into that group bears those traits, but a noticeable majority do display them. EVEN GOD'S WORD DOES THIS!"Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons" (Titus 1:12). Paul quotes a Cretan prophet and says "This testimony is true" (Titus 1:13). But weren't there some Christians in Crete? Obviously, Titus being one and he is to appoint elders in the church who lived in that place...notable exceptions!!Jesus' charge "Scribes & Pharisees, hypocrites!" did not necessarily appl...
