BOLT!

Erin and I went to see the sneak preview of BOLT tonight. Bolt is Walt Disney Animation Studios' latest computer-animated, 3D offering. It's technically not Pixar, but I did notice John Lasseter's name listed as Executive Producer. I feel about this film much the same as I did about Meet the Robinsons: it's just a good, solid, fun, feel-good, family comedy. That's not to say that BOLT is anything like Meet the Robinsons, but both films left me with very similar feelings about their overall merit, if for different reasons. BOLT tells the story of, well, Bolt (voiced by John Travolta), the canine star of his own action television show. On the show, Bolt plays a scientifically altered dog with super-powers which he uses to protect his owner, Penny (Inspector Gadget reference?), from the Green-Eyed Man, who has kidnapped her father. The catch is that, in order to make Bolt's performance as convincing as possible (and in a very Truman Show-esque move), the show's producers have foo...

In Good Company

I seem to have the type of personality that really gets attached to certain brands/products/companies for some reason. I know I like coffee, but I love Starbucks. I know I like animated movies, but I love Pixar. And it occurred to me recently that at least part of the reason for this is that I think about things in terms of how I myself would do them (or at least I like to think so) if I were given the chance. If I could make automobiles and market them, I would try to do so like BMW does the Mini Cooper. If I made clothing, I would try to make the kind that Life is Good does.If I were a musician, I would try to write songs that are similar in lyrics and sound to Sondre Lerche's.I think the things that these companies/artists/etc. understand is that they are not producing products to market to absolutely everyone. In a time when so many companies try to reach near global appeal, these companies reach out to a particular segment of the population. They know they're not goin...

Irony

As shocked as I am about how many people are over-reacting to the election, after two years in Alabama it still surprises me more how many people in this state get even more bent out of shape (or excited) over college football. You know it's just a game, right?

The other night Erin, my beautiful and intelligent wife, was telling me about the little Mr. Potato Head Pirate accessories she got for our niece to use on a pumpkin for Halloween. I asked her how the pieces attached to the pumpkin, thinking they were probably just adhesive so as not to puncture the pumpkin, but she told me that they had little stobs like all Mr. Potato Head pieces. Now, Erin and I are both skilled in the use of the English language, but we also make up our own words for things from time to time. Thinking that this was one of those times, I laughed at Erin's choice of words. I was also struck by the straight face she kept while using such a silly nonsensical word like "stob." Even as I laughed, she looked at me quizzically asking, "what?" Now, the only thing more surprising than Erin's belief that it was a real word was her shock that I did NOT know this word. Apparently not only did she think it was a real word, she believed it to be a c...
