I helped kick off ESPN's 23 hours of NCAA Basketball. Memphis played UMASS at 11:00 CST last night. I got home at 2:00 a.m. but it was worth it. Great times with my brothers in Christ at the Forum!

Sunday Morning Article: Rejoice and Be Thankful!

In just a few weeks our country will gather around tables, stuff themselves full of turkey and dressing (unless you are one of those non-traditional ham eating families), and talk about things they are thankful for. We are a blessed people. If we really came up with specific reasons to give thanks, one day wouldn’t provide enough time for the discussion. We are told to pray without ceasing and give thanks in everything (1 Thess. 5:17–18). We should be a grateful people. This past week was a great week. I realize that any group of people, including this church family, will be divided following an election. There are some who are dismayed and concerned because their candidate of choice lost. There are others who are elated and look forward to the change of leadership. Regardless of which side of the election you were on, there are great reasons to rejoice. There are things we ought to be thankful for. Here are some things to consider: Strong stands were taken on an important mora...

Tuesday's Notes-One day late...

As I drove to the office today, everything looked exactly the same. The trees had not withered. Their leaves were still rich with autumn color. The creeks I crossed over were still rushing with the same vigor as yesterday. People were still driving down the street as usual. I noticed no evidence of freshly closed businesses. It appears that at least for today, everything is the same. Whew! It’s not the end of the world. I know some people feel that way. Some have probably looked into moving to Canada (oddly enough you would move to a country with a social health care system—one of the tenants of the platform you were against). But things really have moved on quite normally. I’m not so naïve as to think that there won’t be changes. Our President elect ran on the message of change. But for today, all appears to be well. There is no doubt this country is in a transition. I am reminded of another transition in history. Judges 21:25 states, “In those days there was no king in ...

WE ARE DISINFRANCHIZED VOTERS!!! (did I spell that right?)

So here's the story...I voted early. My registration was messed up and we knew it so I bypassed the problem of going to the wrong precinct. It took them thirty minutes to change my address. Then I was placed in the C06 Precinct. It would let me vote for State and Federal candidates but not city. I stood at the voting booth for forty minutes while the poll worker was on hold trying to get it fixed. I finally left and just cast my ballot for the state and federal and forfeited by city vote. I had work to do (that blows out the myth that preachers don't work). So today, DewAnn goes to vote at the C06 location and stands in the long line. One of our elders was working the polls and knew it was the wrong location. They sent her to C01. On the state maps we are C01. The C01 poll location is the same school Peyton goes to—five blocks from our house. After another hour in line with Jamison, they send her back to C06. So, I call the election commission. I tell them our story. After talk...

Great Weekend!

So you already know that Peyton won the Super Bowl Saturday. Then, this afternoon I performed a marriage ceremony for Nancy Clevenger and Lindy McDaniel. Lindy pitched in the Major Leagues for twenty years. How often do you get to officiate the wedding of a MLB player??And last but certainly not the least. In fact, the greatest news! We are pleased to announce that Adri Stanko put on Christ through her obedience to the gospel tonight! SOMEBODY PINCH ME!!!! As if my weekend couldn't get any better...Fat Phil Resigned at UT!
