G'ma near Boulder City, 1959

March 1, 1959 – SundayThis is a lovely place. The trailer park has a waiting list. But there was space in the camping grounds where there is no charge. The deck and beach is very nice, and it’s easy to put the boat in.We took the boat and went to Temple Bar on Lake Mead... We took our lunch along out in the boat, so that was the first time I’ve gone with Leo. I had a good time but sure got tired. I can’t stay cramped up so long without a lot of distress.Took Rt. 68 and our drive home and across Hoover Dam to Boulder City, and the trailer camp here was a pleasant one. Now we want to wait til Monday for the mail, then take off to visit Death Valley and then back here to see if Leo can catch any fish. He sure has been trying. A trailer neighbor gave us two very nice ones last evening. The lake is like a big mirror, and the sky and lake are the same blue. This sure has been a day of quiet and peace. It’s quite a pleasure to take a nice long drive here, as there are...

G'ma arrives Boulder City, Nevada, 1959

February 23, 1959We took a long drive today (with just the car). Went to the old ghost town Oatman on the Gold Road. This is an area of abandoned gold mines, and really the mountains are worth the drive. But one should be very careful that you don’t go while it’s raining or very wet, as you follow so many washes as well as crossing several rugged ones... We came home via Kingman, on 68 to Davis Dam, which was as pretty and dangerous a mountain drive as we have ever taken. Sure wouldn’t pull the trailer over it. The views are out of this world...We enjoyed it all. I picked up some rock, and something that surely looks to me like a thunder egg, that is supposed to come only from Oregon...We had planned on moving today, but no. Leo hooked onto something he said was a fish, but since he has been fishing over two weeks now, and nary a bite, maybe it was a fish...I sure am ready to get on the road...February 24, 1959I went for a walk and got acquainted with 3 little kids. ...

It's really me - house updates...

So - we've lived in this house for about 12 years now (can't remember exactly which year). You know the principle of matter decaying as time passes? Well, this house has needed help for some time (several things since shortly after we moved in), and we have not kept up, to say the least. Our dear, dear friends got together (some of them VERY talented) and provided labor and know-how to do some things this fall for us! That has helped to really jumpstart my dh to make a list of other things that need to be done around here. He has been working at it since then (when his energy level and continual ear infection have allowed him to be on a ladder, for instance). He has taken care of some downed trees in the yard. He has trimmed bushes. He has about half the new siding on the back wall of our house caulked. And today I sealed the wood of our new back steps attached to our new back door (that I just painted the inside trim around) that leads out from our newly patched kitchen subflo...

G'ma Left California 1959

February 10, 1959 – TuesdayWe left the Valley today. As we drove east on Rt. 60 & 70, I looked back on the lovely valley of Coachella and all its glory. We drove off into the pink mountains, the east of the Valley where the mountains are 4700 feet and reflect the most unusual pinks at sunset every night. This rich little valley is almost unbelievable in its development. It has irrigation, almost all vegetables do very well, and our fanciest are shipped from this valley. We visited the Salton Sea. It was interesting... It’s a very pretty sight to come upon this beautiful body of blue water right off the desert with all its dry sand and vegetation. It is 241 ft. below sea level, and was farmed 1906 & 1907 when the Colorado River went on a rampage and flooded things. There are much boating and winter resorts around this sea... We stopped at a couple very lovely trailer courts and viewed the lovely date garden. They are surely a sight with the trees in rows and so st...

February 6, 1959 – FridayLeft Chula Vista 11:30, arrived here at Indio, California, where we are sitting in another of Leo’s cousin’s yard... It was a very lovely drive. There are many date palms, and all along the way from Palm Springs we saw dates for sale...We left the celery fields behind at Chula Vista. We saw many fruit stands with tomatoes and grapefruit, oranges. They seem to be harvesting grapefruit here...We are planning to leave the California state, headed for Bullhead City, Arizona, and are expecting to see people there we know. And since we have an invite by Pa and Ma Riley, trailer No. 9, we are looking forward to a nice time and fishing for Leo.We have driven all the fast freeways, and have made up our minds that they are not as rough driving as the outer drive is in Chicago. But they sure are a challenge to the best of drivers. There is an enormous amount of traffic during the busy hours of the day, since most of the travel has to be done by car. So it ...

February 2, 1959 – MondayThe biggest surprise of my life:“Dear Niece, You sure will be surprised to hear from your Auntie. I have tried so long to get your address, so just now Ethel... gave it to me. Your father‘s 2 boys are wanting to see their sister, and I sure would just love to see you. You were just a baby the last time I saw you in Kansas. Sure wish you could come to Washington and see me and all of us. Ethel can tell you more than I can write.
G'ma ending January, 1959

January 24, 1959Went to look at one of those big trailers that can be extended sideways. It is quite a thing. Extends from 8 ft. to a 16 ft. width...We showed the Mexico slides and everyone enjoyed them very much. The Rands all have been all over Mexico, so we had a really wonderful visit. They were thrilled at having seen our caravan on TV on Bold Journey...January 25, 1959We are still here in El Mirado Trailer Park, Chula Vista, California. Maud and Bill took us to the beach this afternoon...January 26, 1959 – MondayMaud and I went shopping and each came home with material for new dresses. We had a lot of fun. But the prices are so high. I sure looked hard before I spent any...Then it took $8. for winter material dress and jacket. Also I got a jacket pattern. Got home early, and I started to cut out a quilt top, the double Irish chain...January 27, 1959 – TuesdayTook a long drive through San Diego. We sure have a lot of sea-going equipment in our Navy.We vis...

California 1959

January 15, 1959 Today was a swell day. We were so glad to see Peggy...the view from their front yard is terrific. We stayed til late just to see the night view. It was really wonderful, in spite of this having been one of the smoggiest days on record. It was foggy all the way down, but yet a lovely day... We stopped to see how all were at the Airstream factory. Pa and Ma Riley invited us to go to the Rally Feb. 12 at Bullhead City. January 16, 1959 – Los AngelesWe went to San Diego and Chula Vista where there is more family. Leo got a trailer court rented while I was getting acquainted with Maud... It took us 1-½ hours to get home from their house to our trailer here in Downey, and it wasn’t a bad drive. But I’m sure all fed up with this hustle bustle. I can see why we have to stay here, just to see what people are talking about when they talk about Los Angeles and its traffic and freeway...January 18, 1959 – SaturdayWe went to see Lowell’s lots, stopped to ...

G'ma in California 1959

January 8, 1959We went to get our camera and strobe light all fixed up. We had a big trip to Hollywood to pick up the camera lens.Ordered the awnings for the trailer, and will pick it up tomorrow. The awnings cost us $69.50. That all finished, we started home. The car wasn’t working very well, but managed to do it stopping in driveways and vacant lots, so we didn’t get stranded in traffic. The traffic is terrific here, but not too hard to drive in. They all seem to know where they want to go... The Freeways are fast, and it’s sure a must to have your old car in good working order. Not more than a couple of cars honked in a whole day’s run. That’s wonderful. So different than Mexico. Ha. The one who honks first at a Mexico corner has the right of way, or so it would seem... This was a good day.January 9, 1959Leo worked on the car all morning. Once again things had been put together wrong. But after this working over, all that happened to us on this jaunt was...
