Thought for consideration

1 Peter 4:11 says: "As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." I have been considering Acts 2:38 that speaks of our repentance and baptism but also speaks of receiving the Holy Spirit. When we receive the Holy Spirit, I believe that we all receive something that is the same and that we receive something that is different. We receive the knowledge of the truth the same way. We receive it through the word. We receive the same message, preserved for all time, and the understanding is from God. (Or the Holy Spirit specifically) However, I would like all of you to consider this passage in 1 Peter as to what the gift is? I also believe that we are given a purpose designated by God. We have a place in the church of Christ to accomplish something that God needs to have done. It is our own purpose with the need of our own particular peculiar traits that only we can accomplish. It may have to ...

Raising Children

I was talking to someone recently that described what seems to be some erroneous thinking about raising children. We all want our children to grow up and be independent, self-supporting adults. We want them to see God's word and let it guide them into good decision making. We want many good things for our children. I have seen too many mothers keep their children from being independent because they must ask for everything from them including walking outside. They are so overcontrolled that they have no independence or self-esteem. I know the kind of world we live in, but who rules it, God or Satan? If we are christians that believe that God is in control, then we do not need to over-protect our children. If you live in fear, you will teach your children to live in fear. First, you must teach your children to obey. That is done with clear rules, consistent discipline, and total control of REBELLION. Once your children will do what you ask, you can let them go with others and ...

Hospitality

We were fortunate in having Darryl Smelser, Tim, Mike and a grand group of teen boys this week. They were on their way to the Grand Canyon and spent the night with us. We did not know any of them except that we had met Darryl once quite some time ago. I want to commend the idea of opening your homes to strangers. We had a great time. We did not want them to leave. We shared much in connections of people we know and in God we trust. I think the church is suffering because it is becoming more and more isolated. Sharing your home with brethren is great but the idea of sharing our homes with strangers is ridiculous? Is it? When was the last time you enterained angels? There is no opportunity for such if we don't make a point not to be afraid. By the way, how are you afraid in Christ? I was under the impression that we are freed from worry and fear in Christ. Sometimes I wonder if we trust God or not? We want to. We say we do. Then we lock all our doors and windows, shut ev...

Chasing with good intentions!

I was studying for a sermon this week and I have been jogged by Devin with the thought of Godly wisdom verses man's wisdom. Col 2:16-23 ends by saying that self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. Our flesh creates our bad attitudes, selfishness, and meaness. Carnal answers have no effect on these bad habits. I was thinking about most of the division I have seen and how man's wisdom entered into a spiritual realm. Then boom! It is the same with individuals. A man will sin and justify it with worldly wisdom. How many know we are not to use our tongues for evil communication so we don't curse. However, we run people down, we have a short fuse for minor events, we have no compassion and say so either with our words or our looks. Christians use worldly wisdom to their benefit just as non-christians do. The pharisees were pros at this. Godly wisdom has an effect on bad habits. If you are struggling with...
