I mentioned in my last post about my classes (possibly changing before tomorrow 5pm). One of those classes was Medical Ethics.
Now there are some things we've discussed in the first 2 days that I don't agree with, but the overall focus of the class is not to teach you to like SOCIALIZED healthcare, or SUPPORT/OPPOSE abortion or anything like that, but rather to teach you to be able to justify your beliefs with an ethical response.
Anyway, today in class we discussed Health Care.
1) Examples of healthcare--
-preventative care
-emergency care
-diagnostics
-surgery
-geriatrics
-pre-natal
-oncology
-pediatric
-intensive
-cosmetic
-genetic
-dental
-hospice
-etc.
Thats stuff I believe we could all come up with when asked that question.
Now for more philosophical questions...
A) What are the Goals and Aims of Healthcare?
B) What is the value of healthcare as related to those goals/aims?
C) What are the principles of distribution based on those values of healthcare?
D) What could be the final result?
I'll answer this with my own thoughts later, but think deeply and ethically and morally about these questions before you answer (if you choose to)
I know this isn't necessarily a fun post (its kinda political) but it's important to think about the future of health care.
I think there are 3 main goals/aims to healthcare...1 is to maintain/restore normal functioning. 2 is to prevent death/disability. 3 is to relieve pain/suffering. If there are more add them, but thats all I could come up with.

i did some volunteer work w/ a physical therapist, her answer is :healthcare is supposed to get people back to their normal condition so they can enjoy life

Okay so one of my toes is giving me problems but I had minor surgery on it a couple nights ago and it looks to be healing well.
Summer was way too short/too long...depending on what you really consider "summer". To me, summer is vacation...of which I had 2 weeks with no school, and one of those weeks I works all but 2 days. So the bad part was long and the good part was short. I could have really used one more week of summer.
Anyway my classes have actually seemed doable this semester and I think I may have successfully scheduled a GPR boosting semester for only the second time in my short stint here at A&M. I made a 3.4 my second semester here...every other semester has been under 3. However, this semester looks to push that mark of 3.4 and possibly surpass it. I'm taking a relatively small load of courses that don't have a huge amount of detail (as in physics, o-chem, biochem, etc.)
My courses include Genetics (plus lab)
Medical Ethics
Ethology (study of animal behavior)
Race, Ethnicity, and (their relation to) Health
All in all these classes should be interesting and fun (which is the right combination for good grades.
I'm very disappointed about having to work during football games this fall. Its left me in quite a bind mentally seeing as how aggie football closely following church services and family events in terms of importance. Its frustrating (I haven't missed a game since I've been here).
Anyway, I'm incredibly happy to have Ellen back in CS so I can actually see her at least once every few days (although I don't know the last time that we were both in college station on the same day and didn't see the other one at least for a few minutes).
Its so good to see everyone back and I'm very much looking forward to spending time with some of the new college students.
And I'm totally going to own our fantasy league this year...assuming I don't get second to last pick AGAIN...hopefully I'll be in the middle.
Marshall did a great job last sunday night preaching. It made me excited to start putting my lesson together for Sept. 21st. I have a little idea of what its going to be about but its got a lot of work still.
You know I LOVE soccer and that was pretty amusing :) Looks like you have a pretty good schedule this semester...I loved genetics. Good luck and don't forget to have a little bit of fun. ;)
first two days weren't to bad, I think i'll be able to handle it....I haven't heard of that guy your talkin about I go to a pretty small congregation, somewhere around 30 members. There is a bigger congregation but the preaching is just weak and I went one sunday n the attendence drasticaly changed from morning to evening services, and there were like 20 ppl who weren't there that morning. So yeah I don't know if I just came on a bad day but yeah.

no good...figured you wouldve aced them...stinks you had to spend all the time in class this summer, but getting the credits was worth it i bet. they keeping you busy at work?
thats funny that you should say that because I was just wondering how you have been and what you have been doing, because I have been busy busy busy, trying to get this girl ready for school. Also been pulling weeds and doing the lawn, dishes, laundry, etc. so how have you been? huh? really? so what do you think of those americans?? pretty good huh? yeah I thought so......
...Next tuesday I will be officially done with the summer semester and will vow in blood that I will never take one again. This has officially been the longest, hardest, least fun summer I have ever had, mostly because when I wasn't working--I was studying, and when I wasn't studying--I was at lab, and when I wasn't at lab--I was at lecture, and when I wasn't at lecture--I was at work. Nasty cycle.
Plus all along I wasn't able to spend time with Ellen which hurts because she's my best friend. After going through a terribly long-distance relationship for so long, I've almost lost my patience for not being with her and it seems like a millennium passes between our visits.
Anyway, it will be over on tuesday august 4th (or something like that).
In CELEBRATION, I am renting NCAA FOOTBALL 09 for PS3 and will play the game nonstop (or as long as Clint allows). The game is the most amazing game in the world for the sports gamer. I love college football and I love video games. The things I love about NCAA FOOTBALL:

Things I don't like about NCAA FOOTBALL:
1) Texas A&M has cheerleaders
2) I don't get to watch the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band at Halftime
So I will be playing NONSTOP for several days to totally blow my mind away. Although I am perfectly content playing against a computer team, PLEASE feel free to come over and attempt to challenge me. Its probably futile, but its still a good gesture and I really enjoy the comradery and human competition and weaknesses (sure computers have tendencies...but humans have WAY more).
Anyway, in a good note, I just had my favorite weekend of the summer with Ellen and I can't wait for her to get back.
And everyone else too...I keep seeing pictures of people who were here during the year and it feels like ages since I've seen all of you.
Man, nothing is better than mind blowing, eye-bleeding, energy drink drinkin gaming. Have fun! Also, we will be moved in completely by then, you are welcome to test your mettle against me, although I admit NCAA is not my strong point, but I shall not lose. Bring it!

I think you really love summer school. just like the french are really in charge of the world despite multiple fighting defeats. its true. I read it in Orson Scott Cards "Empire". haha, literature triumphs once again

cool. saw an ad yesterday with supposed all you can eat popcorn/dogs/peanuts and beverages thurs-sat. at the ballpark. not sure how much, but it sounds like a good deal
i still can't vote for McCain in good conscious. Maybe if his running mate is a strong conservative to give 2012 a better shot. But voting for McCain as a "republican" is about like Gotham City voting for Harvey Dent...eh
