Is it possible to be THIS sore from playing the Wii????
Joshua finally got one the other day. He was pretty excited. So, immediately we had to go out and buy games and controllers and battery chargers. You name it, we had to have it right away. I thought he was going insane. :-)
So, anyway, we came home and played Wii Sports. That was pretty fun and we loved the tennis, bowling, and golf games. I actually beat Joshua in golf and normally I can't hit a ball to save my life (except in Putt-Putt). But, then we popped in Beijing Olympics 2008 and played the Track event. Talk about wearing you out! I've never "run" so hard with my arms in my life. Then last night we had a Wii night with some of our friends. We played Mario Party 8 and had to punch and spin and shoot and who knows what else. My arms and back are killing me from all of this video game craziness.
Who knew a video game could be so hard on a body? I wonder how many chiropractors and massage therapists are getting kickbacks from Nintendo. Just something to think about. |

Everyone knows that the 4th of July means hot weather (and plenty of it), cookouts, homemade ice cream, fireworks, shopping, baseball games, and plenty of other wonderful things (see post below).
This year, however, wasn't quite so "4th-ish." It started off with hot weather (and plenty of it), but I spent the day indoors cleaning and straightening up the house so we could show it off to peeps who hadn't been here yet. So, I didn't get to "feel" the heat. I wanted to impress my mom and dad with how clean the house actually was, and so I was busy all day. :-) Anyway, I had the hamburgers made, hot dogs ready to go, and plenty of other food in the fridge just hanging out until 6. Around 4:45, I noticed some gray areas in the sky and suggested that Joshua go ahead and fire up his new grill and cook the burgers and dogs just in case it started raining. He had 6 burgers on the grill that were about 50% done when he signaled for me to come help him get everything in the house...a storm was a brewin' in the sky.
So...strike one for the cookout. I ended up having to cook the burgers and dogs on the stovetop. Luckily our power never went out considering we had what I would almost consider a mini hurricane that evening. Not quite the char-broiled grill taste we were hoping for, but it worked.
Everyone arrived safely around 6 and Mom brought in her homemade ice cream...or what was supposed to be the homemade ice cream. She told me to put the bowl in the fridge because it needed to set up for a few more hours. By the time we got around to eating it a few hours later, it was still somewhat soupy. Instead of having ice cream on top of the Summer Berry Cobbler, we had a drizzle of ice cream sauce. :-) Yummy, but...strike two for the homemade ice cream.
We live about 5 minutes from the county courthouse and were hoping to see some of their fireworks display that evening from the backyard. My cousin quickly informed us that the news said the fireworks would be canceled due to the storm. We had sparklers and some other crazy things out in the street instead. So...strike three for fireworks.
Well, 4th of July over, but the festivities weren't ending there. I got up Saturday morning and went shopping in northern VA with Mom, my best friend, and her mom. They have a great Home Goods store up there and my best friend and I were in the mood for some decorating. I didn't do much decorating, however. I ended up getting a mattress pad, some kitchen towels, a mini strainer, and a pair of shoes. I guess you could say that I decorated my closet a little with the shoes, but overall...strike four for the shopping.
We rushed home from northern VA so we could hit the annual Richmond Braves baseball game and fireworks celebration that evening at 6. Mom, Dad, Joshua, and I took off about 5:30 and made it to the game right at the end of the 1st inning. Great seats awaited us (2nd row from third base dugout), but gray skies awaited us, too. We hoped and prayed through the whole losing game that the rain wouldn't come. And, in fact, it held off until the 8th inning. We ran under some cover where we could watch the game on a TV screen, but couldn't hear anything or see the score. I think we ended up losing 10-3 (typical for the 4th of July games, Joshua liked to point out all night) as the rain let up at the end of the 9th...just in time for the fireworks. Strike five for the baseball (shouldn't we have been OUT by now?).
I may have mentioned it before, but this is the last year for our wonderful Richmond Braves. I've been going to see games there since I was a kid and haven't missed many of the fireworks celebrations since Joshua moved up here 8 years ago (maybe I've missed only 2). It's become an annual tradition for us. And, I love it! They set the whole thing to music and it always brings tears to my eyes to hear such patriotic songs and messages. But, that night was especially sentimental and a few more tears rolled down my cheeks as I realized this would be the last year I'd get to do this. The fireworks were wonderful, the music was great, and it was a great, yet sad, ending to a great Richmond pastime.
All in all, the weekend wasn't that bad. Just a little bizarre. We had fun, we had food, we had baseball, we had fireworks...but, nothing was traditional. It was the "Not-so-4th" of July. |

...and then I can go home for the weekend! I'm sitting in my freezing cold office with a polar tech wrapped around my arms. Really, it's like 50 degrees in this building. And, when I wrap the polar tech around me, I like to go into my calm, happy place. Technically my happy place isn't at the office, but I guess I'm in my mentally happy place. :-) I'll be in the real happy place once I leave here today.
Again, another long week at work and I'm spent.
Happy Friday everyone! Have a great weekend. |
