the king: the lion and the lamb 04-08-08 07:48am CST
craig hearn from north carolina is at jordan park this week speaking at our series of gospel meetings. he has preached three wonderful sermons and last night's especially stirred me to write this post.

"and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals."

And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth."

Revelation 5:5-6 (New American Standard Bible)

it is intriguing to me how in these two verses we see what would seem to be two completely opposite descriptions of our Lord. in verse 5, he is the "Lion that is from the tribe of Judah" and in verse 6 "a Lamb standing, as if slain". how can this be? how can Jesus be both a Lion and a Lamb?

we can then look at romans 11:22 for more insight:

"Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.

if we think back to the time of Christ and how the Jews refused to accept Jesus as the Christ the Son of the Living God and their prophesied Messiah, we can look at it like this: the Jews were looking for a "Lion". they wanted this powerful earthly ruler to come and save them from the tyranny of the heathen nations. when Jesus didn't fulfill this hope, they rejected him. they looked for the Lion and missed how he is also a Lamb.

people of today are the opposite. we only see Christ as a Lamb, a docile creature who would never hurt anyone. we forget that He too is a Lion. it is true that God is a merciful and loving God but we often add to this the thought that He wouldn't dare judge us for our actions even though they were sinful. God would never truly condemn us to hell. all you need is love and that covers a multitude of sins.

remember:

Christ is a Lamb in isaiah 53 when he opened not his mouth.
Christ is a Lion to the disciples when he stilled the stormy sea.
Christ is a Lamb as described by John the Baptist in John 1:29
Christ is a Lion when he ran out the moneychangers in John 2: 13-17.

our Savior is both a Lion and a Lamb. we shouldn't focus so much on one description that we completely forget the other one. otherwise we are just as guilty as the Jews of the New Testament who wouldn't accept the Christ because He didn't match their description of who the Messiah should be.
