Something to think about... 11-07-08 05:26pm CST

I received the following. It claims that David Letterman wrote it. I don't know if he really wrote it or not, but I think that the content should give you something to think about. Essentially, I liked it's message to stop blaming outside sources for your unhappiness.

"As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.

The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?''

A. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?

F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.

J. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.

K. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

L. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day. Make no mistake about it.

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go.. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes, tornadoes, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'"

I thought I saw somewhere (email?) that it was Jay Leno!

beckylboyer

That's good. We all need to be reminded of that. and that doesn't even touch the blessings we have through Christ.

neenee

Whoever wrote it, he did a good job. Thanks for sharing. It was good to visit with you last night!

haileym

Yes thanks for sharing! I like the suggestions about the bird cage newspaper!

The Olympics 08-09-08 09:23pm CST

Every time I watch the Olympics (summer or winter - it doesn't matter) I think to myself, "I really should be more athletic". But that just boils down to me sitting on the couch and watching more of the Olympics.

When I was little I really thought I had a chance to go to the Olympics - I'm not really sure what sport I would be entered in since I wasn't good at ANY sport, but it didn't matter. Boy, I was such a naive little child. Don't worry - I kissed those dreams good bye a long time ago.

Enjoying watching the Olympics!

I dreamt about it, too, so you're not alone! I loved gymnastics and swimming. Unfortunately, I need to be more athletic too! Weren't the opening ceremonies just awesome?!

green_gourmet

I felt the same way when I went to see Disney's Pocahontas(sp?) in college...I really should be a bit more athletic. ...able to run up and down mountains and such (nevermind that she was a cartoon character). Like you, I have also done little to achieve my dreams. Maybe someday.

lolo

I dreamed of playing beach volleyball...but with more clothes on. : ) Weren't the opening ceremonies amazing?!?!

sweetmelissa

Yeah, especially when I see people our age doing stuff I could ever imagine even having the ability to do!

haileym

I've never really been able to watch the olympics until now. We didn't have cable growing up. I feel encouraged by these athletes. I took Tyler on a walk this morning. I've found myself sitting on the couch alot lately and it's time to get up and make every moment count.

karaashley

haha, aww i LOVE the Olympics! & i LOVE that i am moving to BG this weekend!

thomassive

i always wanted to be an olympic diver. don't ask me why. i would die if anybody ever saw me in a speedo.

cptkeith84

I love the olympics!

karaashley

yep, i leave tomorrow! :) it is crazy! aww, thanks!

volschickg

yes mamam that is her brother, and yes i hope things go well this year. :)

kare_n_huggs

oh! Angie, it was good to see you there, but I didn't know how to find you either. I am sure I will be back at Lost River at some point. I will definitely look for you. I think we live really close to each other. Mike and I ran into that realization when we were at camp because we both live on Shive Lane. I will look forward to running into you very soon! :)

beckdobbins

I had a great time chatting for lunch today. Hope and Mike have a wonderful weekend!

cassie_barajas

Angie, I think you migbt have know my older sister, Patty Smith who went to Purdue. Are Ted and Vicki your parents?

cassie_barajas

I ended going to Purdue the same year you went FC but I only stayed there for 2 years. I was able to get to know your parents and sister Laura. You have a wonderful family. After looking at your friends, it also seems that we know some of the same people. It is a small world.

karaashley

Hey! Thanks so much! He's alright - they removed all the cancer from his head, thankfully! but they are still waiting to find out whether or not it has spread into his lymphnodes or something along those lines. So far my classes are great! It's kind of tiring sometimes having 5:55 AM practice, then a full day of classes, haha - it's actually not too bad because i only have practice 4 days a week :) I hope all is well with you! Hopefully I will get to see you now that I am just minutes away from you!

sunnylee

thanks! So even though you once lived in BG it's still hard? The hard thing too is this: Ross and I know that we will probably be moving in a year, to be closer to his job (he travels ALL the time for work..right now he is in Conway for two weeks) and although I get to see him more than I did living in Tampa, it's still just not enough! So then I'm like...should I make all these close connections and friends only to lose them and start over again?...

sunnylee

I watched a recording this weekend of the "Opening Ceremonies" of the Olympics...and cried through the entire thing. I have decided I am going to buy that dvd...how awesome and yet so intimading are the Chinese?!

tickets

haha i totally agree! i really enjoyed watching the olympics...sad they're over! yeah i thought about doing a lot of stuff too, but alas...

green_gourmet

thank you angie! i can't believe how fast it's crept up on us! but it's fun!

sararhoton

Tag! See my blog.

sararhoton

Yes, it's mostly just shopping sales and using coupons. CVS and Walgreens both have free items every month and if you have a coupon for the free thing, you actually end up making money! (as a disount on something else...they don't actually GIVE you the money!) :)

sararhoton

I asked the op of the grocery_game group invite you. Those ladies are awesome at helping me find deals!

Chigger bites and dirty laundry... 07-19-08 10:39pm CST

That's what my husband came home with from camp. I don't mind scratching his legs for him and doing his stinky laundry, it's just nice to have him back. It was a long 7 days without him. I don't think I'm going to let him leave for that long without me again.

redtop

That sounds like my whole family after our camping trip last month...yuck! Glad you have your hubby back.

beckdobbins

Yeah, seven days is too long! I am sure he had an okay time - not a great time since you weren't there but okay! :)

derbydi

Absence makes the heart grow fonder!

nillabarr

It seems like everyone around here is getting chiggers lately! Do you use fingernail polish?

beckylboyer

Yay! (If that means next time you'll come too!) The bugs were bad this year and I was only there 24 hours. Ryan got a huge swollen leg from a wasp stinging him. We are also working on mounds of laundry from daddy but so glad he's home!

kris

wow, it must be chigger season! I don't like it when Aaron is gone out of town for more than a few days at a time either! Happy scratching!

spimman

If I remember correctly clear nail polish will kill chiggers

megan

For some reason when I go out of town I don't feel like it's that big of a deal, but I'm sure if Greg left me for much more than two days I'd be a sad chica. Training went...today, that's all I'll say. However, embarrassing as it may be, the only guy in my classroom when I walked into today, I recognized...from Facebook. He was from MN and a former USF student so back in '05 we became facebook friends, but never had met in real life, until today. I scribbled a big fat "N" on my forehead for huge NERD. Please forgive me.

sweetmelissa

I didn't know he had left for camp. Sorry you didn't get to go! Hey, so I STILL have your birthday card! Maybe one of these days I'll give it to you. :)

megan

Happy Anniversary!

summeraly

That movie makes me think our college days in BG....I think we watched that movie the entire time we were there. :) We need to get together soon! We are too close.

kyle

oh man that made me laugh out loud... you so funny.

My birthday and the 4th 07-05-08 02:39pm CST

I'm now 26 years old as of Thursday. It doesn't feel any different. We went out to eat with some of our friends. Mike made a cake, which he decorated himself (he's great), and everyone came over to eat it and hang out after dinner. Mike got me a Wii. We had talked about getting one someday, but he's sweet and wanted to suprise me with one. We have definitely stayed up much later than usual (which is usually late anyway) since Thursday night. Oh well it's worth it.

Friday we cooked out with some more friends and went to watch fireworks at Western (WKU). However it was raining most of the time we were waiting for them to start. We found a little awning to hang out underneath though. It really reminded me of when we were little. My family and I (and usually most of our church family) would watch fireworks on Purdue University's campus. There was a parking garage that we would drive to the top of and watch them. It was so much fun.

Hope everyone had a great 4th.

trishie

Happy late birthday!

beckylboyer

Happy birthday! I never feel any different either. But maybe when I hit 30? Luke told me I would be old when I turn 29! Kids are great for that! Wish you were going to be at camp! I'm looking forward to seeing your husband

tickets

sounds like a wonderful time! happy belated birthday! :o)

beckdobbins

Yeah, it was a lot of fun! I hope you had a wonderful birthday. By the way, I like the new profile pic of you and Mike in the corner.

haileym

I never felt older until I became a mom and started driving a huge SUV and saw a spider vein - awww!!! Scary. Happy Birthday. Tyler had fun watching the fireworks for the first time. A Wii is on my wish list :)

tu_madre

you should get guitar hero for your wii. i have it for my xbox and love it (-:

mpettes

Awww... happy belated birthday. Yours is one I always remember =). That is so funny that Mike got you a Wii. Classic move on his part.

We had such a great time with you guys the other night. We've been trying to figure out a way to get you guys, Richard and Charity, and Kylie and Justin up here ever since ;). Our weekends are pretty free! You just name the date!

mpettes

He is SO cute!!! We were just with him last night =)

karaashley

aww happy belated birthday! and yay for fireworks! :) i miss you a lot! in exactly a month and a day i will be moving into my dorm at western!

wilbur

I watched fireworks from a parking garage in a college town as well on the 4th!

beckylboyer

Its definately hard to be the one at home. They are so busy with their schedules and you are just waiting to hear from them! I know you'll be glad when he's home tonight! We really missed you. I hope you can come next time.
