Gas Prices and Stuff 11-14-08 01:24pm CST
I am loving these gas price wars and falling gas prices. I filled up for $30 yesterday instead of the $50-$60 it has cost the past few months.

We had a wonderful November Ladies Bible class yesterday on Invisible Wealth. We read many Proverbs about the subject as well as got sidetracked to various topics, like: Why is it always the same people who sign up to feed the visiting preacher? Or how do you go about motivating people who attend once a week that Sunday nights and Wednesday nights are important to attend, too?

I have been thinking and praying about re-aligning our Ladies Bible class. For four years, we have met (almost) monthly. Several ladies have asked that we meet weekly; others have asked if we could spend time together on projects as well as have Bible classes. Have any of you ever been part of a group who met weekly and perhaps rotated lessons and projects every other week?

With an empty nest and no family nearby, I'm trying to make plans for Thanksgiving. We'll probably be just the two of us as everyone else at our congregation has family nearby, so do I buy just a turkey breast or get a small turkey? Better yet, would you like to come have Thanksgiving with us so I can do the full spread, which is what I'd much prefer? :)
preacherdavetxSorry, but I can't make it this year. But since you're saving so much on gas, I say get the small turkey!
flyonthewallI like the idea of engaging in projects as well as study. A group of ladies can get so much done. And I agree with him. Go for the small turkey :)
tryphenaThe following is NOT a racist comment: I'm a white-meat person, so the turkey breast would suit me just as well.

Projects for the ladies can be good, but it's easy to lose focus, from what I've seen. We tend to 'run with the ball,' and then realize that we've not done what we set out to do, and/or there are unintended consequences. Just a caveat--not saying it shouldn't be done.

Sometimes, doing things as a group alleviates some people of their individual responsibilities (although it encourages others in theirs). Be alert to those who think the bases are covered, and draw them in. I like working in small groups of 2 or 3 to accomplish things within the larger group.
meremeThis is just me in a frustrated mood talking, but maybe on the "off" weeks, the ladies who are regular in studying and attending could spend some time with the other ladies one on one - like mentoring a young mom or visiting the "shut-ins". Group projects could also be fun on off weeks, if there are several who have something in common like quilting or knitting, then they could make stuff for others (and invite and teach the ones who'd like to learn). I think the point above about losing focus is probably important - don't cancel the regular classes in the meantime. Just thoughts, from a younger woman. :)
meremeoh, and if we could make it over for a spread at your place we would! I know I would enjoy gleaning from you. :)
holly_annI like the falling gas prices as well.
sarahtidwellSorry, I can't make it for Thanksgiving. Getting together with my family. Glad the gas prices have dropped.
aletaWe have met weekly in segments. Meaning, we said we meet for the next ___ weeks to do a certain study, and then break. Also, we're happy for falling prices in gas, and it helped us on the trip we made, but it's the reason Houston is finally succumbing to the slump out there. :(
tucksmomFor a few years (empty nest) we had a turkey breast shared with my parents (next door). But THIS year promises to be a full spread again. Yay!
arsenalKinda the same with us. So we are taking our youngest son to Universal with a turkey dinner an Cracker Barrel. Pat does not have to cook but I will miss my favorite part of the meal, leftovers.
w3jlOur gas prices are low also and it's so nice to be able to fill up for a reasonable amount! I hope it continues to drop as the crude oil prices drop. Maybe we'll be able to plan a short trip for Thanksgiving!!
preacherdavetxYou're such a thoughtful Mom... keeping your son golden!!!
nickkrumreiRuth and I had a couple of holidays just the two of us. I got cornish hens and stuffed them like a wee turkey. All the trimmings just small, but thanksgiving with no leftovers is like... well I shudder to think?!
nickkrumreiI paid 1.93 today at Sam's it is reported to be in the 1.50 range in the Cities. But it won't last long.
anneI loved your comment about the self-serve florist!!
jocHappy holidays to you as well. Looking forward to our paths crossing one of these days.
preacherdavetxuhhhh, i gues Pleo will be our journal:)
rdockensI am estimating June 30 (but when I went to the doctor for another reason, he wouldn't tell me anything about the pregnancy. :-( So I will have to wait til December to know anything "official". Thanks for your hope (but I am already sick).
lilahYou are more than welcome to come and be with our family for Thanksgiving, there will be plenty, the more the merrier
arsenali was looking through the FC Alumni book and see that you were at FC with Cathy Cope, the president's daughter. I remember her from my academy days. Didn't know her well. Connie was in my grade. Connie had to fight the boys off being a real looker. Not me, I was definitely not in her league.
friedajThat is beautiful. Thank you.

I'm Back 10-29-08 06:41pm CST
I got back to Cary, IL Friday night. Doing all the driving between Illinois and Texas and taking a couple of side trips took its toll (get the pun?) on this quasi-older woman. Thankfully I had Steve as a passenger between here and Tuscaloosa, but after that there was no one. (I'm the only one who can drive the company van when Scott isn't in the car for insurance purposes).

I had a terrific time and got to visit with many friends and Pleo friends, too. "Who?" you ask? Let's see. Sunday, 10/12, Steve and I went to evening services in Hessville (Hammond), IN and got to see and hear Bill White preach a wonderful sermon. For about 20 people, their singing was phenomenal, including two of the best song leaders I've ever heard.

Monday, 10/13, we had lunch with Shane. That evening we ate with Kim's family and saw former Elginites Tom and Joyce Towe and the Norm Webb, Jrs (former Elgin preacher) and Srs (FC classmates).

Tuesday morning, Steve and I drove to Tuscaloosa. He and his apartment-mate, Caleb, unloaded the van. We had lunch with Alisha and Katie at City Cafe in Tuscaloosa. The food was excellent and such a deal. I hope the same young 'uns will go with me when I'm in the area again. :)

I made it to Houston on Wed. evening in a thunderstorm, just in time for my sister, Janet, and I to go the Bible study at Cy-Fair, where I saw Mike and Ginny Dubose (from FC) and met Lindsey in person.

Friday I headed to Texas City. That night I went to the gospel meeting/singing led by R.J. Stevens in Rosenburg and saw Aleta (and got to meet her hubby) and Gene and Janice Mabry, two more FC friends I hadn't seen school days.

Saturday I drove to the TC dike, which was still closed due to Hurricane Ike, and visited with one of the owners of a large shrimp and bait shop. She was busy taking the roof apart. Most of their building had been blown down. Hauling was being done for free but pieces had to be in manageable parts to be hauled away, so that's why she was working on the roof.

Mother and Daddy were in reasonably good health while I was there, and we got to go to The Reef, my favorite seafood restaurant, on Sunday. Sunday night I went to a new seafood place with David and his lovely family, so I got my fill of grilled and fried shrimp that day.

Monday, Mother and I made a trip to Galveston to see the Hurricane Ike devastation. The first thing I noticed was ALL the billboard signs blown down. A couple (like Whataburger's) had already been replaced. The next thing I noticed was lack of plant life. Galveston is known for the beautiful trees and bushes in the center islands along its main boulevard. Everything looked dead from the salt water that had flooded the island. We were advised not to drive too far along the seawall because the mounds of garbage were quite smelly, and Mother has allergies that couldn't handle it. I heard on the news that Galveston is going to spend a gazillion dollars getting its beaches back in shape.

Also on Monday, I met Frances and her daughter, Dana, for ice cream in the afternoon. Again, I had a wonderful time seeing a great Pleo friend in person.

Tuesday, I headed to the north side of Houston and spent the night with my dear childhood friend, Texas Linda. She and her hubby are the ones who kept my parents during the hurricane. They still had piles of brush and quite a few empty spots in their 3-acre lot where they lost trees due to the hurricane.

Wednesday, I drove to Sulphur Springs, TX, and had a lovely dinner with Beth and her family. A friend of hers had made an Italian casserole which we had for dinner. After Bible class, I met her daughter, Kasey, and the twins and lots of people I'd love to have as friends.

It took two more days of driving to get back to Cary, which, of course, included a stop at Lambert's, Home of Throwed Rolls in Sikeston, MO. I get sleepy a lot easier than I used to. To stay awake, caffeine was much needed and singing loudly and listening to music and pinching myself were all needed.

I really enjoyed all of the congregations I visited and all the lovely Pleonasters I got to visit with. Invariably, I met people at each congregation who called themselves Pleo lurkers. If they visit my blog, I hope you'll let me know when you actually join and post and include me on your Friends' list. It has taken me several days to recover from my trip, but it was well worth it.

sarahtidwellSounds like you had a busy trip. Glad you enjoyed it and made it safely back home.
w3jlGlad you're back safely and had a good trip. Next time you go to Tuscaloosa, you have to meet me somewhere.
cdillman23Glad you had a good trip! Sounds like you got a lot of visiting done!
arsenalGlad your back. Sounds like a great trip.
arsenalI hear that in Tuscaloosa, wearing a BAMA/Crimson Tide t-shirt/sweatshirt/jacket is mandatory.
dshGlad you had such a great trip!!
w3jlI live about 30 minutes from Huntsville, in Albertville.
mladymanWhew! I'm tired just READING about all your travels! Glad you had a good time, and glad you made it home safely.
nickkrumreiNice! I need more details, seriously. I want to know specifics. We should plan a trip to Galveston in January. It is a nice break from winter. Hopefully they will have the seawall cleaned up by then. Glad your folks and Janet were good. I miss them so much!
sarGlad you had a nice trip. How fun to meet all of the pleo people!
aletaSo glad you are home safe! Seems like forever ago that we saw one another. I regret not being able to spend more time with you!
preacherdavetxThanks Anita. We miss you down here. Glad you're home safe though. 3rd week of April is what it's looking like right now.
alisha08aw yay! i was a highlight in your trip! i feel so special! Next time you come to Tuscaloosa, we will definitely go to City Cafe with ya! :) Glad to hear you had an exciting and safe trip! p.s. ask steve about his hair. :)
aprilonealsounds like a fun trip! i cant believe you drove all that with nobody with you! i would have to pull over and do something like every 30 minutes.... my parents live in Longview and its about 7 hours from tuscaloosa, so next time you come here to visit steve ill ride with you to texas...i can just hitchhike my way back home. :)
preacherdavetxHey Anita! I need your help in getting out the VOTE! This is one election we can't afford to lose!
ilovepondsI'm so glad you made it home and we really enjoyed your visit! I know you must have been exhausted and I really appreciate getting to have you in my home for a meal. I hope I didn't take you too far out of the way and contribute to you being so tired. Please come again whenever you can.
friedajGlad you had such a great trip. I am jealous.
friedajI LOVE traveling although I do have to do ALL the driving. One year we left for 5-6 weeks and put 9600 miles on the van. Joe put less than 100.
friedajMeeting all these pleo people would also be wonderful!
arsenalLet me be fair. Not all Dems hate guns. Congressman John Dingel of Mich is just a liberal as Obama in everything except guns. The last gun control proposal under Clinton failed because John Dingel let 40 Dems to vote against it. You didn't hear that in the media for obvious reasons. They wanted to blame it on the Republicans. There were enough Republican votes to pass it. It was Dingel and the 40 Dems that defeated it.
arsenalThats led not let.
ilovepondsYou are way too kind! But, thanks just the same.
kim_boowhy thank you!! he loves that you sit in front of him...he told me so!
preacherdavetxI'll take you one step further... don't even start a marathon:)
kim_booThank you! Jaxon is feeling tons better. He's teething but he didn't feel too good the past couple days.

To Texas 10-11-08 01:56am CST
I usually go to Texas once a year. This year I'm going twice. "Why?" you ask? Today is my mother's 80th birthday, and I'm going to help her celebrate a little belatedly. We have great plans. She is not able to get out much anymore, but she has already asked if I'd take her to the Mall of the Mainland (MOM -- fitting, isn't it?) in Texas City and to Kroger's. I was thinking of painting their living room but that's more than I can handle by myself.

When I go to Texas City, I usually have to stay in a motel. Mother and Daddy (and my older sister) have a small home with one bathroom, and sometimes it's not enough for the 3 of them. I started last week trying to make motel reservations somewhere near TC, even 40 miles away in Houston. I was finally able to get reservations yesterday. Someone cancelled, and it's a Comfort Inn about one mile from my parent's. Yippee! There is still much damage from Hurricane Ike in that area, esp. Galveston, and there are many evacuees and workmen being housed in all the hotels, even miles away in Houston. I wasn't able to get all the nights I wanted, but I'm thankful for the 3 nights I got.

I hope and pray good things will happen for all of you while I'm away.

preacherdavetxWe will see you in a few days.
ilovepondsEnjoy your trip to TX and maybe it won't be too hot this time of year.
aletaOh, yay!! If we get to see you that will be just another wonderful surprise!!
dshHave a great time with your family!
kt_did2190okay! well i have class at 8:00, 11:00, and 3:30, so if you're still here after my 11:00 class (which ends at 12:15) i'll definitely stop by and say hey. yes, steve has both mine and alisha's number. just tell him to give one of us a call.
friedajBe safe and have a good trip.
tucksmomStay safe! Have a good visit with your mom.
cdillman23Ooooo, take me to Kroger too!! I hope you have a wonderful time with your family!!
francesHappy Belated Birthday to Doris!!Hope you ae having a great trip.
holly_annWe'll miss you! Enjoy your time with your family!
preacherdavetxAre you here yet?
kt_did2190It was so good seeing you yesterday! I hope you liked City Cafe, and I hope you made it to Texas safely! :)
lilahHope you enjoy your stay with your Mother
janiceSo glad I got to meet you in person.
seainmeI hope you are having a wonderful time with you mom. I'm sure this will be a very special time for her. What a sad reason for all the hotels to be so booked up. But I am thankful that you were able to get one so close to "home." Enjoy your time with family.
motheroffwumpsHello, Anita. I'm assuming that you are Steve's mother? Nice to meet you. I hope your trip to Texas was a good one. Did you by chance swing by Tuscaloosa on your way?
didowI hope you're having a good time in Texas. I've heard it's really hard to get rooms in Houston. A friend from here had to stay in Huntsville for their Drs appointment at the medical center.
motheroffwumpsWell, I have yet to meet Steve, but Caleb has good things to say about him. I'm so glad for him to have a roommate, especially a good Christian young man like Steve! He had not planned on living alone for the summer, but it worked out that way. Hopefully, Steve will get started back in school soon. Who are your Athens friends?
preacherdavetxHope you made it home safely. Thanks so much for the dinner the other night. We had a great time. Joshua is still talking about you. God Bless.
nickkrumreiTravel safe, happy birthday Dorris! Greet the brethren there for me. Go to either the Szechwan Garden in League City FM518 and or the Peking Duck on Nasa Rd One. There were some GREAT resturants in Kemah, but they are tore up. And Joe's BBQ in Alvin. Ruth and I would share a baked potato with brisket ladled on top. They are huge! They were 4 bucks, they might have gone up but split with two people it is the cheapest, most delicious meal. And they have a nice gift shop for the tourist. It is by the Gator Bank on Hwy 6
nickkrumreiWhat was that little seafood place in Texas City your Daddy would take us to on Sunday afternoons? They had the most wonderful hush puppies!
fmr1222Are you home? ;)
ilovepondsEnjoyed having you so much last Wed. evening. I'm glad you had a safe trip. I know you must be exhausted!
matilda_jane34Enjoyed meeting you when you came through Sulphur Springs on Wednesday night. Many years ago (in the 50's, I had a roommate from Texas City. I went to visit her once (Pat Purvis) and have never been back there. Stop again if you come through here.
w3jlAnita, could you resend the last C&S issue, please? I think it got lost when our computer was acting weird.

Getting Ready for this Week 10-04-08 12:40pm CST
Lord willing, this will be a great week. Our gospel meeting starts tomorrow and goes through Friday. Charley Ward from Winchester, KY, will be our speaker. Though Bro. Ward is having lunch elsewhere tomorrow, I've invited a couple of families over to try crockpot spaghetti and I hope to invite any visitors we may have at our worship services.

Tuesday is our monthly ladies Bible class, and Charley Ward will be our speaker that morning, and I'm making individual homemade pizzas for lunch afterwards.

Two full cars of 'Bama students, including my son will be driving to Chicago at the end of the week to do some sightseeing, so hopefully I'll be meeting some of Steve's new friends, esp. if they'd like a Chicago-style home-cooked meal.

I apologize for Comfort and Sharing not getting published the past few months, but we are in catch-up mode now. The July 31 issue went out Thursday night, and the August issue is scheduled to go out towards the end of this coming week. It feels good to be able to focus on this undertaking again.

I hope you have a great week, too.
tryphenaExcellent issue of C&S, by the way. Enjoy your wonderful week! Sounds terrific!
w3jlThanks for the all the work you do on C&S. It's a great undertaking and I appreciate all your hard work. Great on gospel meeting and Steve and friends coming home. Have a great week!
quincysmomI too always enjoy getting and reading the C&S.
People don't realize how much time and effort goes into doing that. Thanks! Maybe you can share the crockpot spaghetti recipe? About the Bama students - they will be thrilled to get a home cooked meal! I remember those days!
sarahtidwellI hope your gospel meeting goes well. Sounds like you will be real busy during the meeting.
jocHope you have a wonderful meeting. Ours got postponed because of the hurricane. However, we have been hearing some great sermons from our preacher, Kris Emerson. He's just fantastic.
lilahI really enjoy the C&S bullentins, I pass them along to my Mother, we too have an upcoming Meeting, with Vernon T. Garden, next week,
preacherdavetxI guess you have to be gold to do that, because I don't have that option.
cdillman23Take your time on the C&S because you have been so busy with other things. I was wondering what happened but I haven't been on the computer that much anyway.
aaron_nicthanks for the birthday wish! it was a good one. I will check out comfort and sharing. I'll pass on plagiarizing, tho :) I once heard a preacher say that he only has about three sermons, they just have hundreds of titles! I think it might have been my dad.
jocThanks, Anita. We actually attended Humble for a year when David was very young. I've heard Steve Fontenot preach and think very highly of him. His daughter, Celeste, attends at Eastside with us. Kris is an awesome preacher.
jocI've heard David preach several times, also. I think a lot of him, as well.
dshThank you.

Hope you have a great Gospel Meeting week.
aaron_nicdon't know if we're invited yet. we would love to but probably can't afford it >:(
jocWell, you've definitely brought back some memories. About 1973, we first visited Humble when we were trying to decide where we wanted to move. A couple by the last name of Bean took us home with them that afternoon for lunch. They were so sweet. We decided we couldn't move that far from Artie's work, so we moved to Dayton. Fast forward a few years, we attended there for a year about 1981. During that year my sweet mother was baptized there. She passed away a little less than 5 years later of cancer.
rdockensI like that picture too. It was tough getting any good shot, since Orion was not very happy.
aletaThanks!
nickkrumreiIs Charlie related to Joanna or Keith or neither. I went to school with them (F.C.)
janiceThanks! I do have an extermator come regulary every three months and he was here just 2 or 3 weeks ago. I may have to call him to come out again. The people who lived here before me also had this problem from time to time.
meremethank you!
aletaIf we weren't keeping RJ and Pauline, I'd say please, stay here! We only have the one extra bedroom. I hate the we may not see you.

I was thinking you'd be staying with your parents but I'm not trying to be nosey.

8 Things 09-26-08 12:45pm CST
Post eight random facts/habits about myself. Choose eight others to "tag", and include these guidelines. Then let my "taggees" know that they've been tagged.

Here goes:

1. I enjoy and am thankful for my side-by-side refrigerator, Big Bertha. I drink lots of water and the outside ice/water dispenser suits me to a T. I think both the freezer and the fridge hold twice as much as the last refrigerator we had.

2. I was Female Athlete of the year at FC '69-'70. Though I really am dainty on the inside, it has never surfaced to my outer being.

3. One reason I like to have people over is to keep my house clean.

4. My younger growing years were spent in a tiny 2-bedroom house with 6 people in Humble, Texas. We had one of the first tiny-screened TVs in town.

5. I have never used the phrase "my bad" and don't really understand what it means. Is it an apology of sorts?

6. I like making homemade bread.

7. My husband and I have been on some wonderful vacations. My favorite ones have been to national parks. We have been to many of them twice, but I have never been to Glacier National Park. Hopefully, that one will be next.

8. I try to keep my clocks five minute fast.

__________

Consider yourself tagged if you haven't been tagged yet.
(8 older comments)
sarahtidwellI have never been to Glacier National Park . One of my wonderful vacations was when we went to Alaska and crossed the Arctic Circle. Very memorable.
anneWe have earth worms! Not a lot, but a few. In our digging, we exclaimed over each one, gently transporting it to a nice soft pile of dirt and tossing some over it so it wouldn't turn to worm jerky in the west Texas sun.
anneOur oldest began using the term "my bad" when he played basketball in high school. I think it means "I goofed and it affected you. Sorry."
textiletFortunately, for UGA, they are in a separate conference than Alabama, so it is not necessarily the end of the line for them. We'll see if they can come for the whole game next time. I was busy and didn't watch any of it. I'm glad I was spared!
textiletWell, they are in the same conference but different divisions and still have a chance to meet again for conference champion.
nickkrumreiUm I have been tagged but I don't know what the questions are. I ate at least 3 apples picking. Too many give me a belly ache. Have you seen the movie Oscar?
nickkrumreiOh and my bad means "I was wrong".
ilovepondsLoved your fan story! Now I'll think of that fan when I'm fanning myself during the Lord's Supper.
lilahI too, usually set my clocks 5 min. ahead, to keep me on my toes, my husband and all 3 children went on vacation last year went to the 7 islands or some call it the virgin island, on a cruise and flew to PR when my husband is from it was on of the most beautiful places I was so in aw of the places God has made so beautiful, and wonderful that all our children went too
w3jlThis was not a planned pregnancy, but we are so thrilled to have another grandson (2 for us). She was thrilled to be able to hold him Sunday afternoon. And he's such a good baby.
holly_annHa! Believe me, I was very tempted :) Maybe someday. I'm thankful to know you as well!
kim_booThanks!! I loved South Padre. We were on a band trip. The jungle-y one is at the zoo in brownfield.
jerzgirlWhat you said on my blog about Chicago winters is true! Chicago cured me of a LOT of things -- 8 month winters included. Yuck. Mostly our 4 Chicago years were a trial to my soul in nearly every single aspect.
on_eagles_wingsLove your list! I need to make mine, but can't think of 8 things that people don't already know! Thanks for your sweet comments and prayers.
mladymanI love your list! I grew up in Pasadena, TX-- not too far from you! And our TV screen was tiny, tiny -- and black and white, too!
textiletIt is a tough climate right now, for sure!
nickkrumreiWinding a clock, I like that, I will have to remember that next time someone comments. Young man, funny girl. I don't get called young anymore.
preacherdavetxActually, nothing. I can go a year or two without even remembering I have my own day! But alas, I do. I really should start doing something special that day. Like go to Chuck-E-Cheese.
preacherdavetxI did a beautification project to restore the entrance to an old subdivision
nickkrumreiYou are bad! I told Ruth that window was off, she said no one would notice. Now I can say, Anita and I will see it. Kidding. Thank you for the cudo's and yes that was my first inclination, how many levels of principles are there? Wikipedia, or is there a righteous-pedia?
w3jlYeah right, nephew/cousin!! Kind of crazy, but we have a weird family!!
mladymanGot my C&S newsletter! Wahoo! Haven't read it yet -- I'm saving it for a moment when the kids aren't around and I can drink a cup of coffee and focus on it. In other words, it's my treat for Saturday!!
brucknerdplsYes! Faberge Eggs. That's what they are! :-)
grannyOn #3 one wonders what is really motivating the negative. . .
grannyunbelievable! But then again, I believe. Honouring doesn't require to the nines, but at least your best. The trouble is, our best is what the rich man wears -- and so we find the flip side. The poor understand what their best is -- clean, pressed and often mis-matched, but their best -- and thankful.
