This is an excerpt taken from a commentary written by actor John Voight that appeared in Sunday’s Washington Times.
“This is a perilous time, and more than ever, the world needs a united and strong America. If, God forbid, we live to see Mr. Obama president, we will live through a socialist era that America has not seen before, and our country will be weakened in every way.”
Have you seen An American Carol? Bad language, but great conservative humor. Mixed emotions about recommending it, but definitely an "upper" for conservatism.
Everytime I hear of a downturn in the economy I think it is a good time to visit Disney World. No crowds, no lines. Not to be. This past Thursday Pat and I took two of the grandkids to DW. It was wall to wall people.
There are three reasons for going to DW.
1. Grandkids, however, this reason is subject to change depending on moods of those involved.
2. Pat suspends the eating restrictions. I can have a Mickey Mouse Premium bar. Two, if I can talk Pat into allowing me to watch the backpack and stroller while she takes the grandkids on a ride.
3. We have a year pass that expires in December. I want to get my money's worth out of it.
It seems the media is creating the hysteria over the economy. As for Disney, I'm dying to go. But my hubby isn't (He used to live in Orlando and once worked at Disney.). Do you need a third babysitter??
We used to plan our trips to DW the week after Thanksgiving (not Monday, though). There was no crowd, and you could tell the employees enjoyed the break.
Yes, I know a lady at work whose daughter is going there with her family next week. They got a great package for $2400.00 to go there!!! I can't even begin to imagine spending that kind of money, esp. on kids who are so young that they won't even remember going in a few years. But, I wouldn't even spend that much even if the economy was fantastic@
One of the sermons that has affected me the most was from a 1983 FC lecture given by her father, Mike Schmidt titled, The Sin Of Being Right. It was based on the opening verses of Romans 2. The lecture was not well received by all because although not stated directly, one can hear Mike saying, “Phaiseeism is alive and well in the church of Christ“. The lecture spends time on the history of the Pharisees and does make comparisons.
The Pharisees were “right” in many of the things they taught. Jesus even acknowledged this in Matt. 23 when He stated, “…do as they tell you…”. But being right did not make them righteous.
Sounds like one worth hearing. Have an outline? Mark and I were having a discussion just this morning. The idea of change or doing something differently is met with such resistance because if we change that must mean what we were doing/the way we were doing it was wrong. We can not be wrong - we are 'The Church'. Ugh, I will stop. Again, I would love to hear or read the above mentioned lesson...
I am currently reading/studying a book called Beware the Leaven of the Pharisees by David Chadwell. Sounds like the topics and viewpoint are similiar. I will let you know if I like it when I finish.
About your post: It seems that "Spirit and truth" are hard to come by. If you have too much truth and not enough spirit, you're a Pharisee. If you have too much spirit and not enough truth, you're a liberal. How do we get around this? The Greatest Commandments. I believe that's the answer, but why is it so difficult to grasp and then do?
I often have difficulty with the church “laws” and regulations based on one or a few verses without consideration of other verses that may deal with the same subject. I would like to offer an example. Understand that my experience with brethren may not have been the same as yours. Further, I believe the Bible serves as its own best commentary.
In Matthew 5:33-37 Jesus said:
34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,
35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
37 Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil.
Some of our brethren and even those in the denominations taught that this meant one could not hold up their hand and swear in a court of law. In some oaths the swearee was allowed to say “I affirm” to avoid this “violation” of scripture. But here is the problem.
Matthew 26:62-65
62 And the high priest arose and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?"
63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!"
64 Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Here Jesus remained silent until the high priest placed Him under oath, the oath of the temple “by the living God“. Jesus did not refuse the oath but after given it, answered the high priest’s question. It would seem obvious that brethren basing the above hard and fast conclusion on Jesus’ statement in Matt. 5 would establish a contradiction. I am sure we can all agree that Jesus did not contradict Himself and that by the inclusion of other scriptures have a better understanding of what Jesus meant in Matt 5.
Good song. 1972, what a good year. I'm of the 70's.
Now if you keep up all this positive stuff about Sarah Palin you are going to owe your wife a walk on the beach!
I am a hand loader of ammunition. Having owned two machineguns that was the cheapest way to go. One day at the loading bench I decided to download--that means use less powder--some 38 Special ammo for my Colt Detective Special.
On a Saturday afternoon I take my Colt and the downloaded ammo to a big vacant space on the edge of the everglades where there is plenty of dumped junk ready made targets. I’m plinking away on some truck tires when all of a sudden I get the faint glimpse of a projectile coming straight at me. WHACK! A bullet struck me in the left forehead. My own bullet had bounced off the truck tire and came back at nearly the same angle as it was when it left the gun. Bleeding from the forehead, I’m still conscience but I can’t find the bullet. Is it still in my head? I drive the 20 miles to the ER. As I’m going through the admitting process and explaining what happened I am asked my occupation. “Police officer”, I said. Did I hear a bit of a snicker on the part of the admitting person?
A doctor did the examination with X-rays of the head and found nothing. No jokes please. But here is the worst part. All gunshot wounds have to be reported to the police and in walks two deputy sheriffs. One was in my academy class who I had out shot on the pistol range. To this day I do not know if the look on his face meant:
1. “Idiot”.
2. He was trying to hold back a laugh.
3. Thinking “I have to do more paper work for this?“
4. All of the above.
He took the report and left. And of course the local paper at the time wrote up all ER admissions.
Having fired at many truck tires with no difficulties the only thing I can figure is that the smaller powder charge did not provide the bullet with enough energy to penetrate the tire therefore causing the ricochet. And yes, I still reload ammunition but use paper targets.
3 observations:
1) glad all is well and you are here
2) I will vote for 4. All of the above :o)
3) you applied the old 'live and learn' = paper targets.
It must have been the weaker load. I "shot my eye out" with a red rider BB gun. My brother and I were messing around and I shot at a big pine tree in our yard. To my surprise something smacked me in the eye - it was a BB rebounding from the tree!
thankfully, there was no blood nor an ER visit (^_^)
nathan's cousin shot the ceiling several time when he was cleaning his gun, he had checked it twice, but he didn't know that a bullet always stuck in the chamber...
We had a marine accidentally shoot himself in Iraq. Bullet went in under is chin, came out the top of his forehead, walked into medical a screaming, bloody mess. He made it, but very lucky.
I wasn't sure if you knew or if it even mattered in my 'story' but P.A. is my exhusband. Of course, everyone around here knows all about it but I didn't know if it made sense if you didn't know what I was talking about.
Yes, I love the beach ... but seldom get there. I live in Texas and have 4 children in college. As a child I grew up taking trips to Fl. with my parents to visit grandparents, one set living directly across the street from the beach. You can imagine the wonderful memories I have!
I shot at a snake once, the bullet lodging in the side of the house (the snake was on the porch). My husband (now my ex) told me I was an idiot and that the bullet could have ricocheted back and killed me. Oh well, I'm alive to speak of it, so all's well that ends well ~ ha!
That's pretty funny. My dad was "accidentally shot" by his firearms instructor when he worked for the gov't. They were in an office building and the instructor (not being an instructor at that moment) asked to see my dad's gun, so he handed it over, which was technically against the rules. When the guy was looking at it he somehow accidentally fired straight up. The bullet hit a lead pipe above them, ricocheted, and skimmed my dad's sternum on the way down. My dad could have gotten fired for handing over his gun to someone else, but since the instructor was so embarrassed, neither ever told anyone. Amazingly, that instructor did the exact same thing to someone else later on! Idiot!
