Just a little paint. 11-19-08 08:57am CST
It’s fun to see how just a little paint makes a world of a difference. Last night we painted the trim in the hallway and just doing that it looks different. This time around we are painting the trim first then the walls. I can’t wait to see how it looks after this weekend.

Tomorrow after work I’m headed to Hartselle so I can be up and ready on time (8:00) to leave for Nashville. Still hard to believe that November is almost over. I need to crack down on my Christmas shopping. I have a few things brought but need to finish it out.

Edit: Well, I found out some encouraging/good news about having migraines. Women who have migraines are 30% lower risk to develop breast cancer than those who do not have migraines. Mom mentioned this to me last night and I googled it to see.

Thoughts on the kitchen 11-14-08 09:23am CST
It’s time when I need help. Since I’m new at this re-doing a house thing, I need to hear about your experience.

The Kitchen. This is where we need to do the most work. We are going to replace most of the appliances now (cooktop, oven, dishwasher) but I have no idea where to look to get the best deals, what brands are the best and good deals. Also we are hoping to replace the counter tops and flooring. Thankfully we don’t have that much of either of those (we have more of cabinets than counter tops and I’m happy about that). So what I’m asking is….where do you find the best deals on appliances and what brands do you like?

As for the countertops, we are thinking about doing tile. We like to be different than other people and not many people we know have tile so it wouldn’t be like we are doing what everyone else is doing. Does anyone have tile countertops or has experience with them. I know one down fall would be you would need a flat service to rollout any type of dough, but I’m ok with that. For the flooring, we are throwing around the idea of concert stones. I have seen pictures of these and it’s really neat how they look like cremate tile. Like the countertops, it’s different. Any thoughts on this?
this_old_manI have a subscription to online consumers report. Do you want me to look up anything?
this_old_manWe bought Flexsteel sofa and chairs on their recommendation and are very pleased with the product.
teachin2kidsDo not get Frigedaire! They have broken down on us a good bit!
teachin2kidsLove the ideal of tile but consider the color of grout and cleaning it. Also flooring...just dont' do vinyl of any kind... I hate mine... it is awful. My sister had laminate wood flooring in her kitchen and eat-in area and it keeps pretty good she says. Just have to keep it dust/swept. If either of you have alergies..this is good! Also my mom has 18" tiles on her kitchen floor... you drop anything...it's gone!!! She hates hers because the grout shows stains really bad... I am not sure if they sealed it though! Tile is cold.....boy I am opinionated tonight...sorry for rambling on and on!
quincysmomSince we have been married we have bought Amana refrigerators. The first one we sold b/c it didn't match the new kitchen but it still worked great. We ended up buying another one and have had it 13 years with no problem. We have only had to buy one stove in our 30 years. It is also an Amana downdraft stove. I think we bought ours at Bob Wallace Appliance when they were on sale. My parents have just bought a new convection stove from Lowe's that was on sale. I think it is a Frigadaire stove.
About your flooring and countertops - get EXACTLY what you want and like. The other thing about tile countertops I have heard is that you have to keep applying a sealer to the grout because it can mildew easier. I have hard wood in my kitchen and I love it. Kris and Melinda have tile in their kitchen and love it. So it is whatever you want. That is what you have to live with for a long time. Btw, I love your room color below!
maxsoraI have granite tile countertops in my house - which I love. They are big tiles, so less grout. Remember w/ grout that darker colors stain less and show less dirt. Also, I prefer a wood edge to my tile countertops - personal preference I guess. w/ granite tile, I just apply sealer once a year and since the house has been rented, I'm assuming no sealer for the past 5 years but the countertops still look good (according to Mom and Dad who went inside recently). I have bought most of my appliances from Sears and been very happy with the results. Be sure and measure often w/ the stove - y'all have a pretty old one so you want to make sure the newer styles will fit! I made that mistake once with a refrigerator - had to return the new one since it didn't fit. Fun times!
maxsoraBy measure often - I mean measure more than once.
kimbo1We like whirlpool. Not all our appliances are whirlpool but if price wasn't a matter we would have all whirlpool appliances. We have some GE stuff and it has held up very well. Out stove was here when we moved in and it still works well. I have tile countertops. I love them because you can lay a hot pan on it and not worry about a burn. The grout is a concern. I used a dark grout so even on the place where I mix, roll, and play with my food the grout is darker. However, it is not noticable because the grout was dark to start with (just a little darker now). My tile is an off white cream color. We used a toupe color for the grout. Good luck!

Back to the grind 11-12-08 07:47am CST
I think I’m finally back on scheduled, although this rain doesn’t help much. The beach was wonderful. We had a very relaxing, low key trip. I forgot how much I enjoyed staying in a beach house.

I realized last night that I have got to get cracking on the details of the wedding. It’s about a 150 days till the wedding. Top that off that I had a dream last night that it was a disaster, nothing was right or finished.

I’m hoping this Friday I can start painting the trim in the master bedroom so we can start painting the walls soon. The halls and master room should be ready to go now. Saturday before heading to Birmingham, we are going to go look and hopefully purchase the new cooktop and oven. After November is over we are devoting every weekend to working on the house.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Wednesday!
