So we are home. We arrived home late Sunday evening. It was difficult to leave. I didn't think about getting emotional about leaving, so it kind of hit me by surprise. Cassy is down there helping now, for which I am thankful.
As soon as I left on Sunday, they had to rush my grandmother to the hospital. Her bp was 211/80. She is still in the hospital. They will be putting a pacemaker in sometime next week, and also doing surgery on her leg for an infection. Grandaddy had surgery last week to remove a tumor from his bladder. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.
On the home front, we are trying to get back into the school routine. We had to re-work our schedule, but that is the wonderful thing about homeschooling. You can be a little flexible in situations like this. I hope everyone is having a great November. This is my favorite time of year. I love Thanksgiving! Hope you have a great week!
Hi everyone! I'm still at mom and dad's. I just wanted to update on how he is doing. He is doing much better about sliding from his hospital bed to the wheelchair. He is only allowed to be up for two hours, twice a day, but I am sure they will increase that as he recovers. Today we took him to the back surgeon. We were elated to find out that he will not have to have surgery! The doctor said his fractures didn't appear to be as bad as they first thought! Dad was really happy about this and as we were leaving the doctor's office, he raised his hand in the air to high five me, and I let go of the chair and he almost went off the sidewalk into a ditch. It wouldn't have have been funny if he had gone in the ditch, but it was funny the way it happened.
I think I mentioned it before, but some from the community came to mom and dad and said that they wanted to help out. Their house is far from wheelchair accessible, so they want to build mom and dad a house. They said they wouldn't take no for an answer. Long story short, they organized a community wide yard sale, bake sale and auction to raise money to build the house and help out with medical bills if there is any left over. They raised $31,000! It has all been quite overwhelming. All of the lumber and labor has already been donated, and they are figuring most of the material will be donated. I can't even count the number of cards he has received. It has been amazing. They have taken a huge burden off their backs! Dad's medical bills already exceed $300,000. His insurance covers 80% which is a blessing, but they still aren't sure how much the auto insurance will cover. You know how that stuff goes. Everyone really has come together to help.
Thank you all for your prayers!
That is absolutely wonderful news! I think it speaks volumes of your parent's reputation in their community. God is definitely answering prayers! So glad to hear of this! It has to brighten your all's spirits tremendously!
I'm so thankful to hear things are going so well! Your dad must have the reputation that we all should have as Christians since the community is jumping in to help them so much. Such a great example to all of us!
We got dad home yesterday. Home right now is my grandparents' house, because their house was the only one to have doors wide enough for the wheelchair to fit through. He settled in pretty easily. At first we didn't think they were going to get the hospital bed there in time, but everything went off without a hitch. Well, except that they forgot to bring a sliding board. So, matt found a piece of wood and cut it off. It was a little comical, because we were able to joke about him getting a giant splinter after all he has been through:) He was pretty worn out by the end of the day, but that is to be expected. Now we just have follow-up appointments for a while. Monday he goes to a back surgeon. At first they said that he wouldn't require back surgery, but now they are saying it is possible he will have to have it. He isn't very happy about that. I suggested getting a second and third opinion to be on the safe side. Thank you for all your prayers. Have a great day!
Dad's surgery went well. They are going to send him home, possibly by Monday. They said they couldn't do much more for him at the rehabilitation center until he heals more. He can't put any pressure on his legs for at least four months. Then, it will be a gradual process of getting him to walk on the repaired leg and heel. They said it would take a while, but eventually he will walk. There are some things that he will never be able to do again, like climb a ladder. Home Health is going to come in a couple times a week to make sure he is breathing well, and to work his legs in bed. Life can change in an instant. I can't imagine how difficult this is for him. I am so thankful to still have him around.
We are heading down there tomorrow. I'm going to stay for a couple weeks and help out with the girls and try to give mom a break occasionally. Please continue to pray for her. This has been very stressful for her. Thank you for all your prayers.
I attend the church in Lawrenceburg, KY, and your father's accident was announced. I just now "happened" across your blog. We are keeping your father in our prayers!
Hi Christina, No...I was not attending here at THAT time...my mother and I attended back when Jeff Belknap and then Grover Stevens were there...we left in early 90's. My family just moved to Ky. from GA about a year ago, and we have been going here since. So, I knew mostly everybody from when I was younger, and of course visiting through the years. Do you know Wayne and Lillian Hardison? They are my grandparents. He passed away this past July. Continued prayers for your father and family:)
They will be doing surgery on dad's heel tomorrow at 10:30. Thank you for all the prayers.
We are having a lot of fun out of Makenzie and Abby. They have been really good for me, which helps out. Hope everyone is having a great week:)
