a somewhat less romantic story.... 11-18-08 12:53pm CST

The last entry was about a romantic moment. Today I read something that just astounded me. Not romantic at all. I don't usually read "Dear Abby," or whichever it is our paper runs. But today, something caught my eye in the headline, so I read it.

It seems a young lady was getting married. Plans were made, guests coming from out of town bought gifts, etc. The letter was from a out of town guest who heard "the minister" say, "Do you, Steve, take...." This guest, an uncle by marriage, thought, Oh, NO! We put the wrong name on the envelope. We thought his name was DAVE! But he could also see other guests whispering about "Steve." After the wedding, one guest went to the mother of the bride and questioned the name. The mother replied, "Oh, no. Dave backed out 2 weeks ago. So, Molly asked Steve if he would take his place. Steve said, sure, I'm not doing anything that weekend." The marriage, if it could even be called one, lasted 3 weeks.

My questions are.....what minister participated in such a sham? And who taught these people anything about marriage and the lifetime committment that is supposedly involved? Even Abby or Ann or the daughter that took their place said something about a lifetime commitment. And they are always so quick to advise divorce! Doesn't the world still think of it as a lifetime committment?

coultersmom

Oh, the guest was upset that no gifts were returned!!!

ktjb17

That's awful!

coultersmom

well, I think he was upset by the whole sham of a wedding. But he and his wife were in disagreement over the non-returning of the gift. Hence the letter to Abby or Ann.

An anglican priest said, "Anglican's want to draw the line w/ homosexual marriage & can't understand why everyone is upset & dividing. The problem is not homosexual marriages & what to do about them. The problem is when we first starting allowing divorce, which made marriages less of what they were suppose to be. The more you degrade marriage the more wrongful marriages will be allowed. Don't be upset about homosexual marriages, be upset that we started divorcing our marriages in the first place."

isn't it romantic??? 11-09-08 03:55pm CST

Yesterday Wilson and I attended the wedding of my nephew, Matt Wilson, and his lovely new bride, Rita Bernhardt in Nashville. It was a lovely setting. Very romantic historic home. It was outside (a bit cold!) and the reception followed on the patio around the house. They had plastic sheets and heaters, so that part wasn't quite so cold. But it was lovely. There is also something so comforting in seeing 2 Christians marry. I know it is not guarantee that it will work out, but you just feel that it stands a better chance. (Isn't it sad that we think that way at all? I can hope that maybe you don't.)

Then we stopped to eat at Panera Bread in Bowling Green before I headed home to Owensboro. We were sitting there eating our sandwiches when a musical trio came to seranade the table next to us. It was an older couple. The musicians sang a song about "loving you forever." Then as the song neared the end, the man got up and went around to her side of the table. He got down on his knee (remember older couple! that might have been hard for him!) and proposed!!! Right there in front of everyone. Wow. How romantic!! Then everyone clapped and there were hugs among the musicians and the couple, so I jumped up and hugged everyone too. Oh, she did say "Yes" and he slipped the ring on her finger. It was just sweet.

Bill and I have always joked about the fact that we just decided to get married. He never proposed. In fact, the story goes that I asked him. I don't really remember it. But he was romantic in Italy when he gave me a ring at the Trevi Fountain and said, "......" Well, maybe it is a bit personal!!!

And some of us witnessed (via photos) the lovely Fairy Tale of Laura Lee Hawkins proposal at Disney World.

So, what is your romantic memory of your proposal or anything else???

coulter

what if those two older people didn't have a right to be married, real romantic now huh?

coultersmom

well, Coulter, that DID cross my mind. I have no idea of their previous status. It still seemed sweet that this older man loved this woman so much that he went to that much effort.

I love it when a man kneels down before a woman to pledge his love & devotion and to ask her to be his the rest of his days. It is sweet & romantic & humble. Jim didn't kneel as he & I were sitting in his car at a Florida beach facing the water as the sun set. He told me to close my eyes. I did while he fumbled with a paper bag (that part wasn't so romantic...just noisy) took out the little velvety box, opened it, told me to open my eyes & asked me to marry him. I screamed "Yes"!!! Yeah, I thought Laura's proposal was tops. Ross did good!!

In Way Over Our Heads 11-01-08 09:12pm CST

Okay. We are really getting carried away these days!! First I bought the new couch that had to be blue so that I wouldn't have to paint the living room. I shopped and shopped for just the perfect couch. We even went to Evansville to shop.

BUT, the couch matched the living room walls too well, so it blended in. So, we decided to paint. We shopped and shopped and sampled and sampled, trying to find just the right color so that I could leave my wallpaper border up. In the end, we wanted a pretty yellow color that didn't match the border, so we decided to strip the 21 year old border off the walls. Wow. That was a lot of work!!

AND since we were stripping the border, we might as well strip the wallpaper under the chair rail along the steps. More work!!!!

AND since we are stripping the wallpaper along the steps, and since the wallpaper runs behind the carpet and the carpet makes it impossible to get ALL of the wallpaper, and since we weeks ago pulled up the carpet in the living room and had our floors refinished.........well, we pulled the carpet off the steps today too.

BUT we are "In Way Over our Heads" now. (That is an HGTV title.) The wood on the steps was as we had feared----ugly old wood because they knew they were going to put carpet on them. So, now we will have to wait weeks (months?)for our floor guy to come and finish the steps. Will we ever finish this remodel???? Why did we ever start it????!!!!!

It is actually George W. Bush's fault. He is the one who sent me that check. I just had to have a new couch with that money. I feel like I am in a book-----When You Give a Mouse a Cookie........ Only it is when you give Cyndi money.............

Just thought I'd let you know how I am rehabbing my hand----squirt, scrape, scrape, squirt, scrape, scrape, paint, paint, paint.........

metzgermom

And the check Bush sent paid for all of that! He must have sent you more than he sent us. :^) Sounds like some excellent rehab.

aleta

Hi, Cyndi! This post made me chuckle. At least your sense of humor prevails!

ootda

Um-m, should I say I knew this would happen? I told you so? No. I won't. I am happy that you are able to re-hab your hand!!! Now I know why I didn't hear from you on Tuesday!!!! Smiling!!!

Thats hilarious! I know exactly what you mean...the little mess or project turns out to be huge in the end. Last year I decided to get to a few rooms/projects when I became an empty nester for the first time...turned into a "Whole House" affair. Good luck!!

I am "handy" again!!! 10-20-08 03:06pm CST

A hand is a wonderful thing to have. It is very useful. It can help you to do so many wonderful things. Like type. After having mine restricted for the past week, I am happy to be able to use it again. I managed to type a bit last week, but it got to be difficult. And I couldn't use the mouse with my right hand at all. Too much gauze in the palm. I had trouble with the little finger on the right hand. But, now I am going again. It is stiff, but the doctor encouraged me to use it. I am sure he meant for me to blog!!! Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Let's hope it fixed my problem. That remains to be seen!!

Hi Cyndi, so glad your surgery went well, I look forward to seeing you tonight if you are up for coming out. Did you ever find out what the error problem is with downloading a webblog photo? I am trying to download a new photo and I keep getting an error message. I remember you said that you were having the same problem. Thanks! Love in the Lord, Oscar

lolo

I just used Photobucket and it does it all for you. You just upload the pictures, click on the slideshow option and pick what you want! : ) If you can't figure it out, I'll show you next time I'm up there. Sorry if I seemed out of it yesterday when you called...I had three kids tugging at me to eat. I meant to tell you that the shirt you bought Emma Kate to go with the striped pants ended up being a 5T. : ) I had to return it and all they had left were those cream shirts with the colored buttons on it in her size. The girls have already worn those outfits from Goodys three or four times and I bought another one for Emma Kate with owls on it that's super cute.

coultersmom

I thought sure I checked the tags!!!! How many times have I done that now???? Glad you were able to exchange it.

I am doing well to type a bit right now. Once the hand gets better, I'll try photobucket. But I still may need instructions. Nice work.
