So maybe you have heard of people wanting to reduce the highway speed limits to 55. usually i am all about people making their own choices and stuff. but this weekend i was in Georgia for my bro's wedding and they were going through the gas shortage thing and very few gas stations had gas.
So this motivated me to try the going 55 on the highway to improve my gas mileage and make it out of Georgia on my tank of gas i found in Atlanta.
so i filled up and set my odometer. drove 191 miles right around 55-60 mph and stopped to eat and fortunately there was a gas station there with gas so i filled up again.
drum roll...........
i topped it off 3x and barely cracked 4 gallons.
i drove 191 miles on 4 gallons of gas.
that means i got 47.75 miles to the gallon.
i usually get around 36 mpg on highway so i wanted to check.
the next leg of the journey i drove around the speed limit 68-73 mph.
sure enough my mpg dropped to 36-37. i drove 152 miles on about the same amount of gas (4.15 gallons). = 36.37 MPG
still good. im not complaining.
but srsly!
ELEVEN more miles to the gallon by driving 55 on the highway.
thats impressive.
so PROS:
more mileage
less cost
less emissions
if you dont have cruise control easier to maintain this speed without big swings up and down
more time to admire nature and funny/nice billboards
CONS:
people have to pass (Not a big deal on a 3 lane HW, and would be eliminated if speed limit was reduced)
takes a little longer
people on HW dont always like slow drivers
(fortunately i found a trailer going this speed and stayed with him most of the way. so it looked like i wasnt the one going slow, and no i wasnt tailing him close enough to get a head wind reduction off him)
so im not really all that much for the limit reduction cause there is a limit minimum and people have a right to go 55 if they want and they can also go 70, but b/c of this experience i may leave a couple hours earlier on road trips and i will be less judgmental about slow drivers on the HW.
In the city 1-2 lane traffic im still gonna honk at you though.

o and i saw this billboard on the HW coming home and i thought it was clever.
