It's not uncommon for Christians in the good 'ole US of A to extol the virtues of patriotism, the Constitution, democracy, and capitalism. These things are well and good...but sometimes I think people get the idea that God sent down the Bible, and then proceeded to send down the Constitution.
The fact of the matter is: patriotism is usually misguided and xenophobic, the Constitution is man-made and fallible, democracy often produces undesirable outcomes, and capitalism encourages greed.
Jesus wasn't interested in his own freedoms/civil liberties and Paul (a Roman citizen with numerous rights) rejoiced in his suffering (cf Col. 1:24).
Which is these "American virtues" is advocated in the Bible?
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus" -Gal. 3:28
Politics is and always will be a liberty that I argue with few about. I love political discussions and am up for political debates, but I'm never dogmatic about it
ya, the most amusing thing is Christians who talk about gun rights as if the reason they are keeping their guns is to physically protect themselves fromm an encroaching government if the time comes.
People who say that kill me. The main reason being that these people are most likely idiots whose life work is to make money. While I'm aware that the starting salary for certain liberal arts degrees and such have a lower starting salaries than others (or no salaries in some cases), people who say this kind of thing fail to recognize several things.
The assumption these kinds of people are operating under is that you go to college to make more money; in order to make more money you must get a degree in business and the like. I realized some time ago that I could be much happier doing something I like for less money than a miserable job that pays more. But my main gripe with this is the the gross oversight of the intrinsic value of an education that is fueled by a lack of intellectual curiosity.
"It is better for a human to be dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied."
-J.S. Mill
As an addition to your post, I can gladly say that my degree (still in original container) is helping to fill one of my bookshelves. Sometimes it serves as an excellent paper weight. Tell them about THAT when they bring this argument to you! Yes sir, I love my degree.
I totally agree with Drew and not because I graduated with a LA degree but because people that criticize a degree based solely on the fact that it may produce an income that is less than their income shows their own shallowness. Happiness is life is not about the about of money one makes or the accomplishments one achieves but through serving others and knowing oneself well enough to know what truly makes you happy. So how about the Celtics on Thursday? Are you going to be watching the game tomorrow night? And what weekends are you going to be out of town. I am in the process of planning my trip to nac.
great! How are things with you? And I agree with your post by the way. I get a lot of "well what are you going to do with that?" comments. I DONT KNOW YET OK?! ;)
I'm in the world series: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Chicago Cubs. I got into the series at the least auspicious time though. I've been noticing that my swing has been starting "slightly late" so I don't have as much power and I'm screwin up.
I would describe my time here as... well not entirely sure, but it involves ups and downs. Overall its been good, I'm ready to go back to Texas sometime.
Ok drew. There is this guy i work with - OMG. He thinks is the political guru of the world! He is always making political jokes and talking about it and what is so sad is he is....so misinformed. There is no hope for me. You just have to smile and nod.
Yea. I can't believe how much I actually do hate listening to Rangers' commentators. The only reason I'm watching the game is because Felix is pitching. But these guys are horrendously incompetent
Such Jubilance...a handful of letters: 2 vowels and three consonants. What joy to recieve a word from Drewibus! Although the concept of a vespa is intriguing, I am not entirely sure that it will adequately suffice in fulfilling my transportation needs. Nonetheless, your imput and your word (with a possibility of a future addendum extending the last word with an "s" ending) is much appreciated. It is beneficial to send and recieve syllables sometimes. As for yourself, I am a self proclaimed idiot year-round. It leaves me with the thrilling prospect of only positively suprising people should I happen upon a lack of idiocy. Good day!
the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for; I looked it up I ronically I was trying to find a recipe for guacamole dip... weird.
