"How Now Brown Cow?" 09-08-08 09:21am EST

Question: Where does this saying come from and what is it's current usage?

Yes, this is your homework assignment for tonight. I'll get deeper as I get the opportunity.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been attempting to catch up on my sleep and I just cannot do it. Yesterday I was able to stay up most of the morning and early afternoon. My husband and daughter go into work early today after an extremely long night for both of them. So......I'm trying to stay awake in order to take them to those places.

This is for Anna. A sweet, kind and young but old soul and I'm so favored to be her friend no matter how many digits separate us in life and physical location.

I'm Only Sleeping

When I wake up early in the morning,
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream

Please don't wake me, no
don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping

Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find, there's no need

Please don't spoil my day
I'm miles away
And after all
I'm only sleeping

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time

Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling

Please don't spoil my day
I'm miles away
And after all
I'm only sleeping

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time

When I wake up early in the morning,
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream

Please don't wake me, no
don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping

cyber_space_cadetI couldn't have said it better myself! :D

btrflybarbFrom Wikipedia - "How now brown cow" is a phrase used in elocution teaching to demonstrate rounded vowel sounds. Each "ow" sound in the phrase represents an individual diphthong. The phrase does not have an explicit meaning per se but can be used as a light-hearted greeting.[1] Although the exact origins of the phrase are unclear, it can be dated to at least 1942 in the United States.[1] In February of that year the Maryland newspaper The Capital mentioned the phrase when discussing a famous thespian's voice:
btrflybarb(the rest of ^) Laird Cregar, now contributing his booming voice to 'Ten Gentlemen from West Point': explains how he got it. When he first tried out for the Pasadena Community Playhouse his voice wouldn't carry past the front rows. Coach Belle Kennedy had him declaim 'How, Now, Brown Cow? and The Rain in Spain Still Stains' - over and over.[1]

valleryy911re: special sisters ---I don't know if there is a widespread accepted definition of the SECRET SISTER trend. I was told that the one that we are doing is just a way to get to know our sisters better and make each one feel special.
jenlew21I'm doing good, just SUPER busy!! I started back to school online!! :D I'll fill you in more later. :)

spicegirl255Yes, he has a bright future in front of him. He is the one who knew all the books of the Bible before he was 2 and a half. He is scary smart.

What an ordeal you guys went through! I am glad it is behind you and did not have worse results!
macbethYes, it has come around again! Can you believe it's been 23 years!!! The only "celebrating" we get to do is go out to a nice lunch today. We had pizza and watched the Cubs play on the official day, yesterday.

Does losing wisdom teeth mean a loss of wisdom?? 08-27-08 01:08am EST

Well, she's gone through it....been extremely grumpy in the time of no communication and whithering drugs, and now I'm off to fix her a late night soft food (cheesy mashed potatoes). I hope she sticks to her regime of drugs and rinses and follows all insturctions. She felt well enough to go to the store w/ me tonight....and shopped until I dropped. Silly girl...that's how she came down with mono. She likes to push herself too much.

Mr. Van got to visit it's favorite auto doctor today and came home with new hoses and a detoured heater system so while there's still no heat in the back there is very good heat in the front. So the wave of water gushing underneath is gone...a few drips still come down so we'll use stop leak AGAIN and see how it goes.

When I asked him today, Jim said, 'yes', he is almost what you'd call an asst. mgr. for the motel. So I guess I shouldn't be upset when he goes there in the morning, works in the afternoon/evening, and then goes in on his 'days off'. And he's still doing insurance work too and preparing to get his website really put together for the fall Prescription Drug/Medicare season start. However, today Jim kinda chilled by himself while the van was being worked on and Grandma B. took Amanda and I to the dental surgeon, dropped off Amanda at home and then went to get more soups and soft foods and prescriptions. I picked up the van later and took a nap. I would've liked to have gone to our monthly meeting tonight for Rabbits, but it didn't work out.

Maggie occupied herself today building another Man Trap near the sidewalk. I'll shovel it back tomorrow morning. *sigh I've tried shoveling the poo in it and then refilling, but I'm not sure if it's working. Maybe I didn't put in enough. (eww) At least it's not muddy so I'll wait another day to give her a bath as I think she dug, threw her ugly outside toy around and rolled in the fresh, cool dirt.

Laundry tomorrow and then our work week starts again. Too short, too busy a 'weekend' for us! I notice the hot days/cool nights and know we don't have much time to get things done before fall that we need to get done. *sigh

Trying to stay up to fit my overnight schedule.
teelduoMaggie does know she isn't a pig, right? ROFL Had to laugh at her rolling in the cool dirt. Silly Goddard does that too. Oh he needs a bath bad.

Poor Amanda. I remember her pain. She does need to make sure she takes care of herself.
cyber_space_cadetLife sounds as crazy as ever. Hope Amanda feels back to normal soon. (Sounds like she must be healing if she's already been shopping, lol.)
teelduo{{{{Hugs}}}}}
hoosierbybirthI haven't seen a walking stick for a long, long time. I always thought they were the coolest. I remember Nate getting his WT out, and he wasn't worth a plugged nickel for a week. If Amanda is feeling fine, let her go.
honeybeeGlad Amanda sounds like she is recovering quickly.

OOO, Man Traps are so aggravating! We finally mixed some of the areas with concrete mix to make it tougher (so far the grass is still growing in the area). I also tried the poo method, worked with 1 dog but not 2 others.
j_a_c_o_bIf you're going to post on my blog, I would appreciate you stop your ad hominem attacks.
blessings_of_a_momI al so looking forward to fall.
speedy62Come work for Hallmark. lol
da_bubblesSorry if i push myself to much. But when i do get the chance to rest i can't. I rest weirdly. But thats ur daughter for ya. I do however would love to get this car thing delt with.

PLEASE STAND BY....... 08-25-08 05:23pm EST

Long weekend. All four colleges are back open for business and the store was ransacked. Our dept. was shaken but not trashed even though we were hoping all our clearance items would start to reduce. Everyone wants 'shower shoes' which in their vernacular means FLIP-FLOPS. But we don't receive new flip flops outside of July/Aug so students are out of luck. We do have tons of other kinds of summer beachwear, sandals, kids clogs, etc....so much so that we cannot make room for any slippers that are now clogging the backroom. My boss came in this morning upset because we didn't sell much and he is supposed to set the slipper wall. Oh well. He's been joking (or maybe not) that I need to toss a pair in every customer's cart as they pass by. ;)

Computer was down part of last week and all weekend due to viral infection...Jim fixed yesterday. Austin went through withdrawal but ended up spending the night at a friends. Today he was very sick to his stomach.

Van is limping and bleeding out water underneath. It's not directly under the radiator but originally on the side only and now near the front under the engine. It was supposed to have been taken in today to be worked on but Jim was 'called' into work (on his day off) to help at the motel so I don't know what we'll do now. I was asleep because he was going to take it in so I didn't take it myself. Jim made an appt. for it tomorrow.....but Amanda has surgery tomorrow. So...probably a call to the folks for a ride. UGH Amanda works today too....she'll be exhausted I'm sure.

Jim's picking up munchies for tonight to go with our soup and sandwiches. The DNC and RNC gatherings will be on the tube the next 2 weeks and we'll be watching....but after tonight we'll have to find healthier snacks. Puts Jim in the mood for football next month. HA!HA!

So before he gets home I'm going to sneak in an ONDemand show that I miss over the weekends and then get dinner ready.

PS. And....did I also say that my youngest decided that it was too much to deal with and quit football? Quit the one game he loves....just after getting his actual game outfit?!! He was having a 'tiff' w/ us parents Friday morning and finally declared while going to school that he was quitting. He was getting picked on and pushed down when not playing. We told him 'NO' and to stick with it, etc. But sure enough he came home via the bus on Friday. I was so upset as I really wanted him to play. Then this morning when taking the last of his football clothes back he said something along the lines of 'maybe I should've not quit.' I told him I agreed but it was too late, he'd told us how it was 'his decision' and this was the consequences of poor judgment, and esp. that the coach didn't need all the drama.
teelduonothing like a good dose of heart burn. I just can't bring myself to watch those things.
honeybeeYou guys are always so busy! I get tired just reading all you do! :)
tryphenaAre you really going to watch the conventions? Both of them? Wow...not sure I could do either!
speedy62Schools don't start here until after Labor Day. Seems to be an East Coast thing. I'm taking Intro to MS Word. Should be interesting.
blessings_of_a_momSounds good. I love On Demand.
cyber_space_cadetWhew! Busy, busy. Ash made the mistake of going to WalMart up by school last night (LATE). She said it was CRAZY busy and the lines were unreal. College towns. Gotta love it. ;-)
tommygirlThank you so much for sharing your personal experience. The spousal relationship is most confusing. It only made sense to me if it was directed at the local body and what they do as the local body. It's impossible for a spouse to disfellowship the other in the manner Paul says.
arsenalI read what you wrote on ^^^ her blog about your husband's "disfellowshipping" experience. It seems all too often DFed members are left of "die on the vine". Withdrawal letters sound more like "we've fullfilled our obligation. Now good ridance". In my experience it is little wonder that the majority of those withdrawn from never return. Also, some who are withdrawn from should not have been in the first place.
arsenalHaving been a Pharisee in my younger days I understand a lot about the way some of my brethren think.
duodamselOh
tommygirlNot TMI but I hope your husband doesn't mind :) I'm glad that he has come back. It's an encouraging story. I completely understand all the attitudes/emotions you talk about. Thank God he (and you) overcame. And...hindsight is indeed 20/20 isn't it? If I only knew then what I know now.

And your comment about commands and instructions about marriage was what I was thinking about. I think you are right. It is in complete opposition to "how to be a wife". And there are the other verses about the spouse consenting to live with the believer, and winning the spouse over without a word etc.

One last thing...I agree with him that many are sent packing with little concern and many don't return. Again, your experience is very encouraging, thank you for being so open.
spicegirl255My marshamllow was virtually perfect! I indulged Sunday night. Thank you!

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward." Psalms 127:3
08-21-08 03:15am EST

Austin had a bad morning but it turned out that it was good we were late to school because I then realized it was PICTURE DAY! I hadn't filled out the form from last week nor sent in the $$, so I quickly got that taken care of and "whew" at least he was dressed extra nice today anyhow. :)

Amanda meets w/ her oral surgeon this morning to see how those wisdom teeth can be removed. I sure don't like her having to go through it but it's been painful since the one has erupted and her teeth at the moment are pretty straight. I've seen people never have to wear braces until their wisdom teeth come in or impact and the roots run all over the jaw and shuffle the teeth around.

After picking up Austin from practice, we'll head to a library to meet w/ other 4H RPC leaders and officers to finalize plans for next year's club schedule. We'll find out if the Fair Board accepted our earlier schedules and hammer out some needed details from our experience this year.

I still have the bee in my bonnet over the kid who never took care of their rabbits all week, never paid the minimal cage fee, let other kids show the rabbits and then after being chewed out by their twp. leader snuck in a day early after their cows/pigs were auctioned off and took their rabbits home. So I think I'm going to call the swine/beef leaders later and ask them how they handle kids who neglect their animals during fair week. If they have a way of addressing it within their club, then I might suggest it tonight during the meeting.

Otherwise, I'm just looking at whether some of our club forms could be redone to lessen paper wasting as well as do some 'examples' for those kids who have trouble filling out the forms correctly.

That's about it for today. Half night at work before the crazy weekend starts. I did a good job staying up part of last night but now that I look at my schedule today I'm wondering where I'll fit in another 'happy nappy.'

So now that I've bored you with my itinerary.....I'd love to hear about yours.

Hugs,
Nancy
tryphenaIndeed!
purdy_2010Yes! Somebody finally understands......Just kidding!
teelduoYes they are!
teelduoROFL oh wait you wrote more. Now I need to read more. ROFL
hoosierbybirthCan you ban the kid from the rabbits next year until they pay up for this year and pay in advance for next year? I'm sure you'll get something worked out. Seems mighty early for pictures taking at school!!! They've only been there a week. Is Austin still enjoying football? My itinerary is just the same ol' same ol'--housework.
da_bubblesThe Computer works YAY
teelduoHAPPY MONDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
