The Other Queen By Phillippa Gregory 11-17-08 10:07am EST
"Every woman should marry for her own advantage since her husband will represent her, as visible as her front door, for the rest of his life. If she chooses a wastrel she will be avoided by all her neighbours as a poor woman; catch a duke and she will be Your Grace, and everyone will be her friend. She can be pious, she can be learned, she can be witty and wise and beautiful; but if she is married to a fool she will be "that poor Mrs. Fool" until the day she dies." Do you see any truths in this statement? Comments?
wiseWe as Christians ladies are taught to choose wisely, it's for life. In todays world many think it easy to change their circumstance by divorce. Yes, I see truths in this statement. What are your thoughts?
mockinbirdHello, I saw your mini-bio on the Ladies Book Club. I was searching for women closer to my own age (55) There doesn't seem to be that many. Thought I would drop by and say "hi". My name is Jo Ann. I'm in Illinois. As for your quote, I think that was quite true during that time period when a woman was often just a reflection of her husband. I think today, with women's independence they are able to generate their own light and are able to outshine negative aspects of their husbands.
runningjakeHmmm... I have mixed feelings about that statement. On one hand, I think it's VERY important to choose wisely who you want to marry. Marriage is definitely not something to be rushed into and that is a decision that you will have to deal with for the rest of your life.

On the other hand, who are we to say what man is right for what woman? Maybe the man appears to be a fool to the outside world but he is very kind and loving to his wife? Also, I definitely don't think it's good just to marry for money. Goodness knows we didn't have any money when we got married but I'm extremely happy with my choice!
mockinbirdWe spent 7 years in the Clute/Lake Jackson area in the late 80's-'93. Guess it is a small world, even with you in Scotland!! How long will you stay?
sunshinelcI have mixed feelings about he quote as well but then If I'm understanding the quote right some of it might apply to us...part of the quote reminded me of a verse in Proverbs 31 about the virtous woman. That in order to be a woman of virtue, she must marry the right man. It says in verse 23 that "Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land." (NIV) When you want to be a Proverbs 31 woman/wife, you must build your family by marrying a respected and hard working man. If you marry a man that does not respect himself and his family, then certainly the household and the children will suffer.

I don't know what do you think?
ex_patProv 17:21 To have a fool for a son brings grief;
there is no joy for the father of a fool .
Prov 18:2 A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.

Prov 29:9 If a wise man goes to court with a fool ,the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.
Eccl 10:3 Even as he walks along the road, the fool lacks sense and shows everyone how stupid he is.
NIV
ex_patI feel to many times women marry to quick and as it is in the world today, marriage is also too easy to get out of. During the 16th century, you were stuck with the person you married. Even though I highly disagree with most of the beliefs during this time period, maybe we all need to go back to bible basics and look at marriage as a life long commitment. Choose wisely.
ex_patI taught Ruth 3 last night and we talked about Ruth as the women in Prov. 31.

Rome was wonderful 11-10-08 12:29pm EST

glitter-graphics.com The best part of the trip was Rome. I also enjoyed seeing a few of my Italian friends from FC. Stefano and Antonella Corazza are doing great. They have two children. Their son works for Ryan air in Dublin and flies in and out of Aberdeen three times a day. Their daughter lives and works in Rome. I also got to meet Gianni Berdini's daughter. Gianni was holding a meeting in Sicily. He lives in Pisa. It was also a delight to worship with the saints in Rome the last Sunday we were in Italy. Stefano taught in Italian but he had his powerpoint so we were able to make out the passages. Antonella and I had some great laughs over our times together at FC. I also got to see Stefano's brother who was also at FC with us. We met the first Sunday in the hotel and one of the other Italian preachers came down on the train and preached for us. Great time, great memories. Have a good week. Pictures will come ----sometime?
notcoolHow fun and exciting! I wish I had the nerve to fly. There is too much of this world I want to see!
alegnaoh how fun! We have worshipped there before- and in Pisa, actually! I want to go to Italy again soon!
kimberlyharbaughWOW! I would have loved seeing that!
ilovepondsYour trip sounds just wonderful!
dorothy129How wonderful! I have never been outside of the United States, so this is all really exciting to me.
runningjakeOh, I loved Rome too! Definitely one of my favorite cities! I'm glad you had such a good experience.
carolina_sueLooking forward to your pictures! I'm so glad you're getting to see so much of Europe.
sunshinelcOH how cool!!!!
rainoutthat's great to hear -- i remember them or at least their names from when i was small and they came to Baytown. i think my Aunt Virgie & Uncle Cliff even went to visit them sometime back then. glad to hear they're doing well.
kimberlyharbaughSo right you are. Jim was out playing brige. :)
runningjakeJorge is doing pretty well. The worst is definitely over for him. We see the doc on Monday and she's going to run a bunch of tests on him so hopefully we can get some answers soon!
kristiegoreWow, that picture is amazing, I would love to go to Rome one of these days.
airborneirishGlad y'all had a great trip. Thanks for the post card. I'm really looking forward to seeing Jared & Sheena in a couple of weeks!
runningjakeHaha, yeah, that would probably be our luck! We're hoping she make her appearance right before Christmas or on New Year's Eve but those are entirely for selfish reasons. :)
danadYou probably know that Jared has been worshipping at Benchley instead of Twin Cities. It is a great little(compared to TC) congreagation not far up the road. I am sure the size makes it more personal and less easy to get lost in the crowd. We don't get to see him that often but we did get to see him and visit when we attended their gospel meeting the other evening. I know you will be glad to see him in December.

Do we really want the medical the UK has? 10-28-08 06:57am EST
You get what you pay for! As many of you know I am an American living in the UK for the last 2.5 years. Living in the UK you have free Health Care. Let me tell you about the free healthcare you will receive. Ever been to the hospital? How would you like to be put in wards? We like our privacy. Don’t expect to have it if we have free medical. Need surgery? You name is put on a list and they will call you or send something in the post a few days before you are scheduled. If that day doesn’t work for you, you get one other note and then you are at the bottom of the list again. So today is your day for surgery. You have been prepped for surgery and guess what? Someone with insurance comes in and you get taken off the table and that person put in your place. Need to see a specialist? Don’t expect to have an appointment before 6 months? They will send you a letter telling you when you are to go in for an appointment. Chances are you will not get a specialist in the area you need. So what prompted this note? I was in Italy last week and my legs started swelling. We though it was because I was walking a lot and the heat was more than I was used to. Today, I went to the Doctor. His answer was “I don’t know”. If it continues you can come back and we can check into it. OK for those of you that do not know me, I am a stroke survivor. I have a rare blood clotting disorder that allows my blood to clot too fast. I had gone in for a sore throat. He checked my throat. Not ears, not temperature, not blood pressure, just throat. So what is the good part of this system? The drugs (if you can get them to give you the ones your specialists in the US prescribe) are cheap. The doctor’s office is around the corner from your house. This I will miss. Thank about what you are hoping and voting for. You might get a lot less than you want.
rainouti've heard people in Canada with similar stories
rainoutgood luck, are you better?
joyfulsongMore people need to know this! Thanks. Hope you are better.:)
runningjakeHuh, in Germany the universal health care was wonderful! I had two operations there and never had any problems and I always got very quick appointments (normally the same day). I think it really depends on the government...
ilovepondsI fear socialized medicine. I hope we'll be able to continue our group health ins. should this ever happen here. But, I wouldn't count on the school system continuing to offer insurance if the govt. offers it for "free."
kristiegoreI hope everything's ok now. I think that universal health care would be a disaster, I hope we don't come to that.
caroldHi! Yes they are! Thank you for the comment. Do you worship with her in Alief?
dederichNot many adults from Kleinwood on Pleo - Amanda Wilson, Krista Everett, Darla Leach
ilovepondsDavid Coffman's wife, Lois will be there, as well as Beth Roach. Dorthy Torno is hosting us at her house (no guys allowed). Susie Matthews will also be there. And, I don't know if you know Janet Johnson, but she'll also be there. She was one of Dorthy's roommates for a summer session, I think. She is married to Chris, and he rides bikes with Keith every time they get a chance. They ride REALLY long distances, like 60+ miles at a time. So, Keith is staying with him this weekend. So, I think you know most of them!
alexThanks, no Brad was not my agent. I didn't use an agent.
notcoolthat scares me a bit!
I'm frustrated for you. Hope you get some better care!
elleymaiemy parents are doing well. they seem to enjoy living in north texas quite a bit
crab_rapperI heard that Rich was coming to see ya. I would also like to make a visit ... but don't see it happening in the near future.
sutherngirlreally! Yes, the recipe is in the cookbook.

Venice 10-27-08 08:24am EST
As many of you know, I'm not great with the computer. I placed my pictures in a folder and even with Jared's instructions can't seem to get my pictures in anything but email. As soon as I can figure it out, I will post them or give you a link. Tim and I flew into Venice on Saturday and the group flew in on Sunday. Our flight was late leaving Aberdeen, we circled London for 30 minutes and then we had to change airports. We arrived at the airport as our plane was scheduled to take off. Our flight to Venice was delayed so Tim and I actually ran through the airport, I was searched and we still managed to be the last two to board. Getting from the airport in Venice to our hotel was not the easiest thing in the world. Many of you have seen pictures of Venice but never realized how much it is made up of water. We arrived in Venice and had to take a water boat to the area where our hotel was, about an hr. ride. It was late and we finally walked, rolling our luggage to our hotel which was about 20 minutes away. If we had only know our tour guide from the UK was the next to the last person on board the plane leaving London. Oh well, we made it. Out trip to Venice went from: car (taxi), plane, bus to other airport in London, plane, waterbus and walking. Sunday the rest of the Kleinwood (Houston group) met up with us and Sunday evening we had worship at the hotel. One of the Italians that Kleinwood supports preached for us and was able to stay the night in Venice with us before taking the train home. So Venice: The city stretches across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. Venice is world-famous for its canals. It is built on an archipelago of 118 islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands on which the city is built are connected by about 400 bridges. In the old center, the canals serve the function of roads, and every form of transport is on water or on foot. Beyond these land entrances at the northern edge of the city, transportation within the city remains, as it was in centuries past, entirely on water or on foot. Venice is Europe's largest urban car free area, remaining a sizable functioning city in the 21st century entirely without motorcars or trucks.

We visited St. Mark's Square and Basilica which goes back to the 11th Century. The classical Venetian boat is the gondola, although it is now mostly used for tourists, or for weddings, funerals, or other ceremonies. We did the tourist rout and our guide was from Joppa. I do have pictures when I can get them posted. When I do, I will try to edit this and add more on this wonderful city. Have a save and blessed day. Cheers!
runningjakeOh, your trip to the hotel sounds very similar to ours! We fortunately didn't have the plane problems but we had to meet our shuttle bus to take us to the hotel, which was a bit out of Venice. So they told us that the place to meet the bus was just 5 minutes away from the train station. What they didn't tell us was that we'd have to lug our luggage up and down all those stairs!!! It was REALLY hot that day too. Needless to say we were about to pass out by the time we got there!
ilovepondsSounds like a wonderful, memorable trip! Can't wait to see pics.
