Since my last entry, my immediate career options for after graduation have been simplified. I didn't get an offer for either the position in Akron or Columbus, both of which I would really have enjoyed. I did get a formal offer from my co-op in Yellow Springs and it was surprisingly competitive with the only other offer I have received to date for a position in Cleveland.
So, rather than start the whole search over again, I'm most likely going to accept the local offer here in the next couple of days. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't get offers for the Akron or Columbus jobs but on the plus side I'll be able to stick around the area (which I actually like) and start taking a good chunk out of my student loans.
In other news, I started my final semester at UD on Monday. I've got three pretty hard-core engineering classes and one easy/interesting music class. Coincidentally, I got my top choice for my design clinic project, and it's for the company in Columbus that I interviewed with.
To conclude, a verse I used tonight at bible study:
Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21
the bonus to having a job close to where family is... when vacation time comes it's easier to choose to leave the area and travel somewhere for an adventure. good verse to keep in mind during the decision time. love ya!
I really like structure when appropriate. Structured classes, lessons, thoughts; basically structure in all communication. If you really know me (not many people do), this won't be news to you. I get frustrated often at what I perceive as the lack of basic order or structure. Make of this what you wish.
Completely unrelated to the previous thought, I've had several interviews to date for full time employment starting in May after I graduate. Right now, most of my thought is not focused on which job would be best; any of the places I'm talking to would be good career wise. I'm mostly thinking about the "where" part of the equation. Do I want to move to/live in Cleveland? Akron? Columbus? Dayton? From the people I've talked to, I've heard more than once something along the lines of, "Well we hope you find something close so you can stay here." I find this interesting as I rarely interact on any meaningful level with the non-family people that have made this comment.
I'll leave it at this for now. Typing this has helped me think about some things that I hadn't previously considered in any detail. To the five people that may read this: this was not intended to tell you anything useful, but to serve as an outlet for some of my thoughts. Your comments are welcomed.
Don't be afraid to move. It has been an experience I will never forget. As I said to your dad. "I never thought I would live in Arizona"...his reply "I never thought I would always live in Dayton". Enjoy the possibilities that you have at this time. A quote from John Saylers "Ohio is like a bad rash, you can't get rid of it, it keeps coming back". I am ready to be HOME the rash is itching. That is my wisdom from a life not much longer than yours. I would consult more aged people.
i'm a little more aged and i say move to NY! seriously... move away while you're singlish. moving away from the norm is a good life expierence. then when the itch comes move back and maybe i'll be back there and we can not talk more :) ok... i guess my real advice is pray 'bout it. mean while fyi... i'll be around turkey day weekend then sometime b4 the new year too. maybe i can make plans with lizard and then break them again to hang out again. sorry lizard... i love you both.
So that is what you call it...liking structure. Silly me, I thought you were just a man of deep thought and few words. I must drive you nuts in class!!! If you have a rash or some related malady I have plenty of ointment you can borrow. Nuff said on that one, though I would like to get your thoughts on a couple subjects.
Wow...my snot wad, rotten children out 'wisdomed' me! Being one of the old fossils that would say something stupid like stay here...I will jump out of the box and agree with my kiddos. Have the uHaul adventure now, while it is more convenient. Note I said uHaul. That limits you to driving distance...humm...guess that does not help much. David and Rachel uHauled all the way to Arizona.
Uncle Mark chimed in and said move to California and make lots of money. You will be able to experience a HIGH cost of living. Then when you move home you will appreciate Ohio more. You can then buy all of your dad's rentals from him and he can enjoy a nice retirement and be your property manager, to boot!
Well, I am at least #4 to read your blog :) Outlets can be good.
Although I have not done it, I would suggest moving as well. There is no where I would rather live than Dayton now and now that we have kids, I can not even imagine living away from family. I had some great opportunities to travel with college (like Ireland!) I have always felt that I should have. However, I know that the Lord directs our steps and it could be that I would not be in the wonderful place I am now in, if I had made other decisions. Ask yourself where you will do the greatest service for God, and you will have your answer.
I suppose I'm #5. Regardless of whether or not you work in this area, you need to do make it a point to get overseas travel in while it's easiest. We plan to take the girls eventually, but it's going to be a few years.
well akron is not a nice place to live, it is going downhill a lot. haha. I guess it depends on where in Akron you will be living, stay clear of springfield township
my advice, don't go to cleveland, Bill worked there for 20+ yrs, horrible city, except for the sports teams!! akron is dying like my kiddo said. Arizona, what can I say"" High cost of living, and alot of old drunk retires on the roads in golf carts!!! Stay home!! (ok, that was the mother in me) Do what you want while you have no responsibilites! (don't tell your mom I said that!)
Chris, I am simply echoing what David and Kelly said, but, seriously, take some chances, and experience new sights and sounds. You are so young and bright, and the world is really your oyster. But, most importantly, pray about it, and God will be there to direct your footsteps. I'm excited to see all the amazing things that life has in store for you!

You bombed a test. What did you get, a B?? I'm sure there is a perfectly snotty comment I could make about the dipstick situation but I will leave that to others. Humm, costume...trying to remember your hair length...you can be a one of the Beatles. Hope the combustion test goes better than the heat transfer test. You forgot to list voting on your Future list.
You need to add some of 'us' to your friends list. That way when our names light up you can come to our blobs and say something profound or snotty, whatever works.
I just got back from my first real, on-site, full-time job interview. It was at US Steel in Gary, Indiana. They flew me and about 15 other candidates in and put us up in a hotel in Portage. The two coolest parts of the whole deal were: 1) getting picked up at the airport in a Cadillac Limousine and 2) touring the Gary Works facility which covers some 4000 acres and operates on a HUGE scale.
I don't think the positions they're hiring for are really what I want to go into, but it was definitely a neat experience overall. It is reassuring to know that there are jobs out there and it has really got me thinking about exactly what I want to do (and where to do it).
Also had a rallycross on Saturday. I drove the rental altima since my car is currently broken. It was a blast as always and I finished first in my class, beat the four other people that were driving the rental, and finished 7/17 overall. The coolest part was pulling off a 34.4s run. The fastest run of the day was a 34.2 and was accomplished by a guy in a wrx that is a navigator for a real stage-rally car.
(That's me in the passenger seat giving some tips to a newer driver. It was also a beautiful day to be outside)
It's about time you post. Welcome to PleoLand. You will make some new friends and reconnect with some 'old' ones.
Now, from time to time, I will know some of what is happening in your life. Seeing you 2-3 times a week has not worked in knowing what's happening! Glad to hear you are the one in the passenger seat...I was afraid I had forgotten what you looked like!
