Sickie Grand daughers! 12-01-08 11:39am CST
Both are sick with Roto virus, and I'm sure Kacey will be posting soon with more details. For now, keep Cara in your prayers as she has become dehydrated and is being put into the hospital, as I type this, for an IV over the next 6-12 hours, possible overnight. Kacey is handling this wonderfully, but I'm sure it will all catch up with her eventually. I stayed with Paige, who is sick, but not dehydrated and now Keith is with her. I needed to get back to work. He happened to take this week off for some vacation days that he would lose if he didn't use them before the end of the year. So, it's really comforting to see how everything just "falls into place." I know His hand is over us and that is the reason. Thanks for prayers and we'll keep you posted!

UPDATE:

I ran by during my lunch time to see Cara and Kacey. I was able to hold Cara so Kacey could eat a bite of food, which looked really good, btw! Cara has the IV going now and it is bandaged up like a broken hand to keep her from pulling it out. The worst part, though, is that the lab needs to collect a stool sample and have placed a contraption inside of her and her diaper. She is NOT happy about this and was throwing fits like I've never seen before. Couldn't blame her, really.

Kacey called me at about 1:30 and said she had finally calmed down and was sleeping on the bed, but not in the crib. Whatever makes her happy! Hope Kacey can rest now some, too. The doctor did say it will be an overnight stay. More later.
dshI'm sorry to hear this. I will keep them both in my prayers. It's amazing how so many things "fall into place" with His hand guiding us.
aletaPoor Cara. She'll pep up quickly, but I hate that she and Kacey have to go through this!

Thank you, God, for your care for them.
carachelleWe will pray for Cara and for the entire family. (You too!) Love you guys.
sperkyoh poor babies... how scary for her mommy! i'll say a prayer for them too!
littlebitWe will keep all of them in our prayers! Poor Cara though! And poor Kacey too!
carolina_sueI'm so sorry they're having such a rough time. I hope everyone is well soon. I'll keep you all in my prayers. I hope the rest of you can avoid catching their virus.
blueeyesPraying! I hope they all feel better soon!
quincysmomPoor babies and mommy! I hope that they are better soon!
csusoftballgirlpoor Cara! I'll be thinking of her:)
loisI'm so sorry the girls are sick. I'll keep them in my prayers.
anneLittle ones can dehydrate so quickly! Our middle son was hospitalized two Decembers in a row when he was 2 and 3.
monkpraying for your family.

Thanksgiving Plans 11-24-08 09:04am CST
We are traditional and spend every other Thanksgiving holiday with alternate families. This year is our year to stay in SS and share a meal at Keith's parents' home. All I've been asked to bring is 2 pecan pies. I use my grandmother's recipe (she passed away a few years ago, but always made an awesome pecan pie!), but mine never thickens up and is too runny for me. My family steadfastly assures me it doesn't matter because the runny part is so good. Anyone out there have a reason why this happens to me? After Thanksgiving, I hope we come back home and begin decorating for Christmas. It's not allowed before Thanksgiving in our home, but I am always ready to get started.

Of course, we hope to shop on Friday but it would be fine with me if we had to postpone shopping and welcome baby Statler! Probably no one is more ready than Kacey.

Next year, we will travel to Seguin and spend the weekend with my family for Thanksgiving and continue the rotating of the holiday. I will miss my family, but they are coming up here in 3 weeks to spend Christmas with us!
kaceyatthebatHI!
4tea_somethingWe're looking forward to seeing you guys Thursday!
monki like to cook, but i don't do many desserts. mine would be runny too. i bet it has something to do with the heat. maybe not hot enough for long enough, or too hot for too long? that's my amateur guess.
jerzgirlHave a great week!!
csusoftballgirlI have the exact same problem with pecan pies!!! I use my great grandmother's recipe (I even wrote it down as she dictated last year) and for some reason, it's always runny. Last time I made it, I even used extra pecans to try to thicken it up, but to no immediate success. This Thanksgiving, I'm determined to get the recipe...again. Wish we could see you at Thanksgiving. I know it's been a trying year, but God has taken care of you and your family. You are in my heart:)
split_rockI've never made pecan pie, but I googled "runny pecan pie" and found some suggestions that may help.
dshI'm sure your pecan pies are great! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
dshIt seems like my pecan pies are thicker the day after I bake them. I usually put mine in the fridge after they've completely cooled.
linda_gHave a great holiday.
linda_gThanks for the WW tips also.
carolina_sueI've always used the pecan pie recipe on the Karo corn syrup bottle. So far that one has worked well for me. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
blueeyesHope you all have a good Thanksgiving! We are coming to SS. However, we are coming Thursday because I teach a Bible class on Wednesday. Please think of us during the game because you know who will be with us watching it!
sparkerme! :)

Happy Thanksgiving!
ex_patI have started decorating since this country doesn't have Thanksgiving. We are meeting up with some Scottish friends for an American Thanksgiving.
bandmomI just use the recipe on the corn syrup bottle and my pecan pies always thicken up. Hopefully yours will turn out perfectly this time!
flyonthewallHappy Thanksgiving! Yes, I do have some suggestions. I'll get back to you very soon :)
windham4lifeHope yall have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I'm sure your pecan pie is great! :)
seainmeOh wow, that is neat. I wish I was there so we could meet each other. :) I hope you get to go to the stadium. Ricky sent me a photo and it is amazing. They are having a great time! Happy Thanksgiving!
emily_reneeNo, I just came home for the break. No football game for me this year. Hopefully it will be a good game! :)
loisHappy Thanksgiving!
lefthandedI wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving and pray that all you have suffered these last few months will become a distant memory with only the goodness you have received enduring.
monki thought about THAT!
swood1124well, I've had access to a newer systems my last few jobs. But my current unemployment left me high and dry. So I now have my own systems. Hope you are feeling much, much better!
kaceyatthebatAfter you left, Paige ran and put the little clothes hamper on her head and laughed uncontrollably. It was hilarious. Then Cara ran over and started saying, "Pee-pie, pee-pie!"

Oh and THEN we told them to "hug sisters" and Paige got this crazed look in her eye and ran toward Cara who was already bracing herself for the attack. Then Cara ran away giggling. Paige is such an aggressive hugger!
babyfaceHope you enjoy the concert. Bring your earplugs! ;)

Life is like a box of chocolates... 11-21-08 06:28pm CST

Photobucket

Keith and I love, love, love the dark Dove chocolate. I enjoy reading the little messages wrapped up in each of the mini-size bites of said candy. We keep a package in our bedroom and usually indulge before retiring for the evening. Keith rarely reads his because he doesn't want to put on his glasses to do so, but I ALWAYS read mine. I kept the following, as it struck an emotional chord with me at this time in my life:

"Life may change us, but we start and end with family."

I couldn't have said it better, and it came wrapped around my favorite food group!
aletaHow touching and appropriate...and yummy! I've not tasted the Dove chocolates, but almost bought some today. Thanks for the recommendation!

You have a wonderful family support system!
sperkywhat delicious wisdom!
tjmeadowsI have been wanting to try that candy. We do start and end with family. I am so anxious for next Thursday when, the Lord willing, we will have all children and grandchildren except our daughter in E. Tennessee and her husband and two boys. They have all been gone from home for a long time but I still miss them, every one. Have a great Thanksgiving. Love from our family to yours.
dshUmmmmm chocolate! Great way to end the day!

That's a great quote.
dshGlad your radiation is going well.
dshShortly after the twins were born, Steve bought me a camara that I could carry easily in my purse. I love having it with me all the time.

We are very fortunate to be able to stay close. :)
linda_gVery nice! And, how true.
anneChocolate is good for you, so I try to take a dose on a regular basis...

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
quincysmom"SWEET dreams"
csusoftballgirlI love those chocolates, too!
carolina_sueI've used the oven bags before and had just gotten away from it. I was planning to do that again but Mike is wanting to try smoking it this year. Tyler has been lobbying for a fried turkey for two or three years now. I've resisted because a fryer would be one more thing to store - and we don't have much storage space. But.....I may cave in yet! All that to say - I don't know how this turkey is going to get cooked this year. But we better decide soon!
bandmomYummy good words. :)
dshThat's a GREAT idea! I love that beaded board. We have that on the ceiling of our screened in porch. NO MORE wallpaper OR border here either!
carolina_sueThanks for the tips! I had come to the same conclusion about smoking a turkey. The directions said to allow 8-12 hours!!! So I'm thinking we might try smoking a turkey breast during the Christmas holidays. I may check with you later about what brand of turkey fryer you bought. I did a little research on them but don't want to deal with it right now. So....the oven bag wins! Not exciting, but reliable! I still may try brining it first, though.
jnathanpI caught the foul ball before that.....does it count?

Father and Son 11-17-08 09:11pm CST
Our youngest, Brian, no longer lives with us, but comes by every evening after classes to have dinner with us. (Probably more for the home cooked food and $$$ savings than to see us, but that's okay!) As some of you know from previous posts and comments, Brian was our toughest one of the 3 to bring up and there were times near the end of his teens that we wondered just how successful he would turn out to be as an adult. Well, I wondered. Keith just kept saying, "He'll be okay, he's just taking the hard way to grow up." He is now 21, loves to be around family (a real change from those last 2 years of high school) does very well in school at the police academy, and more importantly, has developed a wonderful relationship with Keith and me. I say all of this to bring you up to speed as I share with you the typical conversation I heard tonight while preparing dinner.

He and Keith were just sitting at the dinner table and looking over pictures Keith had developed from the surveillance camera they use on the deer lease. I was "listening in quietly" while I cooked some of the venison chili. It was nice to hear them discuss the deer in the pictures, wonder about when they might shoot a particular buck next year, plan on the hunt they look forward to over Thanksgiving weekend, etc. To fully understand my emotions over this eavesdropping, I have to tell you there were times in the past that IF he was at home early in the evening, he wouldn't have chosen to spend quality time with us in the kitchen before food was even put on the table! This change did not happen overnight, or even just recently, but I can't really say when it came about. He now reminds me of the "little boy" who charmed us with his wit and affectionate humor many years ago. His true character has remained and it was never more evident than tonight as I listened to father and son share precious moments as adults together over that wonderful piece of furniture we call "the kitchen table."

For all you parents of teens who may be wondering if it's all going to be okay...I can tell you it will be, if you continue to believe in the spirit of the child and never give up.
jerzgirlI needed this today. Thanks!
aletaThis is so great to read. Thank you for sharing it and encouraging many.
kaceyatthebatI love seeing him play with the girls and chase them around. He loves them so much, and everyone can tell! He's quite a sweetie.
carolina_sueI'm so proud of Brian (and all of our 2nd generation-ers) who are maturing into such wonderful adults!
carolina_sueLuke is working on plans to come back to SC mid-December!
sperkythank you for posting this... we're entering our 'wonderful twos' and i'm already wondering if the things i do will ever make a difference... :) what an encouragement!
4tea_somethingI love Brian:)
christinaGreat post. The teen years are TOUGH. I remember them all too well. I was hard on my mom, and now we are like best friends.
csusoftballgirlwhat a wonderful post, Beth. I appreciate the hardwork you put into raising your godly children. What a fine Christian example you are!
dvaughan47You started him off right and he found his way back! Wonderful!!!!!
joes_wifeThank you for sharing this. I needed it!
tessHow really wonderful. Those little moments are precious and you will remember that. God works in His time. So happy for your emotions. :)
babyfaceYes, some of us do have to do it the hard way.... ;)
carolina_sueAlmost time for a new grandbaby to arrive! I'm so excited for you!! I'll keep Kacey and the baby in my prayers.
carolina_sueAre you still feeling okay even with the radiation treatments? I hope so!
dshThat was nice!
adnerbWow. Thanks for that story of hope! I don't know you, but I have 3 teenage boys -- 19, 17, and 16. All at different stages of that "teenageness". Even though all 3 are very different in their temperments, they all seem to go through this same thing to some extent. This is quite encouraging.
monk"When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry." ~William Shakespeare
sarThat was so sweet. Thank you for sharing this.
missySweet post!!
bandmomWhat a blessing for you! The gray hairs I have all came from David, but he's now a tremendous blessing, too. :D
kaceyatthebatYou have to go watch Charlie's video movie of Evie. So funny!

Aggie girls retreat! 11-07-08 06:44pm CST
I may have mentioned previously that all of my roommates from A&M plus a couple of more gals planned a great weekend retreat for me to celebrate the end of chemo before my radiation was to begin. We met at the home of one of the gals in the Dallas area to eat, laugh, dine out, cry, laugh, hug, laugh, and pray. Did I mention that we laughed? It was truly wonderful medicine for me and it was good for them to see that I was recovering and getting back to my "old self." Many have done great things for me the past 6 months, but this weekend probably was the best. I have known these friends for 30 years and we have stayed in close contact through the years. Our children have grown up together so much that they are more like cousins than just friends. These are the type of friends that at times are closer than even family. I love them dearly!

Here are a few pictures from the weekend. As you can tell, we had a crazy time together!

Photobucket

The chicken in front of "Babes" where we had lunch in Sanger.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Susie and myself on a 3-legged horse!

Photobucket

Dining inside of "Babes" which was delicious! Dorthy couldn't come :(

Photobucket

They made me pose by the tractor. By this time I had already ridden the wild horse, so this was nothing!

Photobucket

And this is 4 of us brave girls in the hot tub. It was the funnest part of the trip and had the most laughs. The girls are Dorthy Torno (our hostess), Lois Coffman, myself, and Beth Roach.

Thanks for letting me share a great memory!

monknothing like women-friends!
jerzgirlWhat wonderful medicine for you! And for THEM! What a blessing true friends are.
loisThat was a great weekend. I didn't realize the horse only had three legs!
dshLooks like you all had so much fun!
tjmeadowsAll of you special ladies bring back so many good memories of my years at Twin City church in Bryan. I am glad you could all get together and have a good time.
anneWhat a gift! I know Dorthy. How nice that your friendships have remained close through the years.
linda_gI'm glad you had such a great time!
emily_reneeSo glad y'all had fun!
bandmomWhat fun! I'm SO glad you had such a great weekend!
ex_patGrat fun with a great group of ladies. I have been thinking of calling Beth. We have been working on getting her on a plane so she and Brad can come see us.
kaceyatthebatI love these pictures. Sounded like so much fun.
kaceyatthebathehehe, hi!
shesheyou look wonderful!! and i'm so glad you've had good friends to support you through this time!!
sar:)
carolina_sueWhat a special weekend! I'm so glad we were all able to be together for awhile. Laughter IS therapeutic!
tessLooks like you had a blast alright! How fun!!
4tea_somethingThanks for the text! How are you feeling these days?
4tea_somethingI'm so glad things are improving!! I'd love to get together. I'm not driving a lot right now because of some weird drug side effects. But hopefully things will turn around soon.
anneMaybe Canon learned something about customer relations along the way. I'm sorry you had such poor service.
kristasfathank you for your comments, I had a TOTAL stranger come up to me at a restaurant yesterday and asked if I breast fed them... um, PERSONAL!!! I really hate negative comments!!! I love my babies!
gjd2007you have been on my mind too lately. I love your post and it looks like you girls really had a good time! my treatment is a little pill I will take - some form of a chemo drug with minimal and managable side effects. I did do the regular chemo and radiation with my original cancer about 10 years ago - then a stem cell transplant. wish we could get together and talk - take care of yourself!
windham4lifeawe, it looks like yall had so much fun!! What a wonderful lil vacation. :) I know what you mean about all the Christmas goodies. My mom has a HUGE collection of stuff, probably a dozen or more boxes full! lol But it's fun :)
4tea_somethingThanks, & back at you!! Is this your SS year for Thanksgiving?
kaceyatthebatOh I was feeling like I dragged the game on and on by having to think so hard. It's so weird. I would stare at my dominoes and not have a clue what to do. I really was having to work at it. Pregnancy brain I guess. Your chemo brain did not show up at all! And it's so nice to hear you joking around, obviously feeling way better than you felt just a month ago. Yay!
kaceyatthebatI think Ken is really excited to go out to the lease tomorrow, even if it's just to drag a dead pig around. LOL!
