Not Quite What I Had In Mind 11-18-08 05:18pm PST
Nick's preschool class does a field trip every other month. In October it was the pumpkin patch, of course. Fabulous place with trains, boats, hay mazes, etc. In December they go to a tree farm. So I was asking if the school gets their tree donated. When they said no, they have to pay for it, I offered a free tree from our place. Not a big deal to us and helps the school, right? Well, somehow that got translated from Nick's teacher to the head teacher that we were willing to do the field trip up here. Ummm...okay... Have you been to our place? May be fun in the summer, but pretty boring in the winter. Lots of mud. Steep hillside. No cute little tree farm building. Nothing to do. Did I mention the mud and hillside? They were not to be deterred by my hesitance, though, and I couldn't come right out and say no to the cute little faces. So we are now hosting two field trips - one for the 3's and one for the 4's. Time to rope in my mom, the former preschool teacher, to help with this one.

In the meantime, we finally got some gravel down in front of the shop for parking/mud control. It also covers all the poplar leaves that were blanketing the ground. Every Sunday I would bring piles of leaves in the house on the heels of my shoes. It is amazing how many leaves you can fit on a 1" heel if you sink just the right amount into the mud and stab them at the proper angle. :) Gravel will be much better.

Now for some more laundry and work before the boys wake up. I will be constantly watching tonight, though, for Carrie's announcement - is it a boy or a girl...I'm so excited to find out!
DessertDivaJust have some hot (lukewarm) chocolate for the kiddos - I bet they'll have a blast!! Maybe you and your mom could figure out a way for the kids to make a Christmas tree ornament that they take home.

Carrie called after her appointment this morning so I've known all this time and I can't tell anyone. She should be online in an hour or so - I know dinner was at 5:45!
julievSure, rub it in that you know already! :)

I was thinking of ornaments, too, but the teacher said they are making those in class, so that idea is out. We're now thinking of making sugar cookies that they can frost and decorate...and then eat. That should keep them occupied for 20 minutes or so.
DessertDivaOh yeah - good idea about the cookies! :)
lifeisgoood:)
robynbobmSaw your comment in Mothering, I have an extra copy of the vaccine book I am interested in selling, if you are interested.
beavermomLittle people, mud, and sugar! Sounds like a recipe for fun!! :)
beavermomMake sure someone documents it with a camera!
robynbobmgotcha
robynbobmI can loan my copy to you should you ever have both the time and interest simultaneously. :)
missybI wouldn't be able to say no either. hopefully it turns out to be fun!
luvbnamomYou're such a good sport! :) I think hot chocolate and cookies would be great.
stylinmamaWow! I applaud you for being such a gracious host! Definitely just hot chocolate (or hot cider) and cookies they will love!

New Group 11-15-08 10:22pm PST
I started a new group: ModernMoms

The group is intended for moms who may not subscribe to some of the more naturalistic philosophies. There seem to be two ends of the spectrum: the attachment parenting/crunchy moms on one end and the more scheduled/modern moms on the other. There is already a group for Crunchy Moms, so I created a group for the other end of the spectrum.

Let me know if you would like to join.
catladyI would like to join, thanks!
DessertDivaYay! I let you know in the pregnancy group that I'd love an invite!
spinningbee"The Feast Week of Ashley" - yes
Diving into a bowl of Campbells ABC soup - no

Tear Here 11-11-08 03:43pm PST
First off today is a note of thanks to our veterans. Here is a quote from an email I received today: "Regardless of who you voted for last Tuesday, it is important to recognize that our republic remains a beacon of light throughout the world…..a place where legitimate disagreements take place but where the transfer of power is always peaceful. This election once again showcased the greatness of the American system of government, and we should all thank our veterans who offered themselves up to protect and secure that way of life."

Second is a tongue-in-cheek political quote from the same email: “If we got one-tenth of what was promised to us in these acceptance speeches there wouldn't be any inducement to go to heaven.” ~~Will Rogers

Finally, the pet-peeve of the day and subject of the title. I'm beginning to think that any package that states "Tear Here" for easy opening should come with a pair of scissors. How often does the "tear here" actually work with ease? For me, rarely. The other day it was a little package of baby formula. You'd thik they would test these things or add a perforation because when I'm holding a starving baby I don't have the time or ability to use both arms, brute strength, or a pair of scissors. That's when a husband comes in handy (okay, there are other times, but I really appreciated him more at that moment). My favorite example, though, was the Dryel home dry-cleaning package. It said "tear here" and pointed to the right. After several minutes of frustration I looked at the packaging. The notch meant for tearing was to the left. Grrr.
robynbobmlol, I love Will Rogers. And only about half of tear here things really mean it, the rest are just mean.
luvbnamomI hear ya, only today I had the opposite problem. I "tear here"'d, only it ripped open so fast and easy that brownie mix went flying everywhere! :)
missybYes, the "tear here" never works for me! I just go straight for the scissors :)
stylinmamaDitto. Especially these days...I'm bound to throw it across the room if I can't get it open. ;)
create_a_waywhat a great story! thank you!
beavermomRobyn was my "claw" that opened all the "tear here" and tight jar lids. Now that she is gone, Jordan is at school or work, and Jennie and I are wimps, we use our Cutco scissors! For jars, Robyn has been replaced by my rubber grippie thingie. She was much cuter to have around! ;)
robynbobmhaha
sarahmarcelleI always open my stuff with scissors. Ever opened a brownie package or something, yanked to hard, and then ended up with it all over yourself? Why yes, that would be me!
crisfrogNevermind, I am in the pregnancy group, just haven't been paying attention.
robynbobmUnfortunately I don't have a swing yet. I imagine it could help.
crisfrogThank you for the kind words.
stylinmamaDo you have "The Happiest Baby on the Block" book? Would you mind if I borrowed it, if you do have it? Of course I have months to read it, but I was just wondering. :)
stylinmamaDon't go to any extra trouble! Like I said, I have months so you have time to bring it to me. :) If you find it, great. If not, I'll be more than happy to wait. ;)
kristasfaI'd love to tell you how I do it!!! It's okay for your formula fed baby to sleep longer... I've noticed that happens with them. I feed every four hours during the DAY... at night, I let them go as long as possible... I will sometimes get up if they're crying, put a pacifier in their mouths and walk away, they fall back to sleep and usually give me another 1 1/2 hrs! To distract them, you'll only have to do this a few times, b/c they're USED To eating every three hours... they THINK they're hungry b/c that's what they've been trained to do. Try the pacifier to hold him off... if that doesn't work, trying playing, everything you can, and when that doens't work, I let them cry. I'm okay with hearing crying, you kind of have to be with triplets! This won't last long and they'll get used to the four hour schedule... sometimes I make it 3 1/2 hrs if they didn't eat well the time before. I'm not a short order cook, so they have to eat on my schedule or I would go bonkers!!! If your baby is already 12 lbs, they can physically make it through the night, you just have to make them go 8 hrs. It took my first child 2 nights to do it after he hit 12 lbs... my doctor said it takes no more than three nights and works 99% of the time. it's easier to teach your child to sleep through the night when they can only scream for 2 hrs instead of when they're 9 months old and they can scream for the WHOLE night!!! I hope that helps.
nifferHEY, i'm not a wimp!!!
julievUh-oh. Time to line up the pickle jars to prove Jennie's strength!
robynbobmlol!
kristasfaI know what you mean! I know that if I make a comment on some issues, I will get chewed out by certain people. Now, for the forumla question. My doctor told me that they will consume generally half of their body weight in ounces. So my babies are around 10 to 9 lbs... so they can eat 4 to 5 oz per eating. My heaviest one easily cleans his 4 oz bottle everytime. They're not getting 5 oz down though... but we're working up to it. Plus you have to understand that my babies started off eating TINY amounts and have worked their way up over the past couple of months... so I'm not sure if that has anything to play in the equation of how much they eat.
nifferlol.:)
potatoprincessOh no kidding! Seems like that happens with every package I try to open! It's definitely a test of my patience!

Reality Check 11-04-08 08:43pm PST
Listening to McCain's concession speech I must admit that while he may not have been my choice as the Republican candidate, he is a very honorable, gracious, respectable man.

We now move forward with what I have previously thought of as a very scary option for President. So, in order to keep my sanity, I have to do a reality check. While my blood pressure may be up as a conservative, a Christian, a business owner, etc. regarding all the changes that could come, I have to look at what is the truth of the matter in the coming four years.

1) Lord willing, the sun will still rise tomorrow.

2) We must accept that we are not in control. Perhaps this is exactly what this country needed.

3) Perhaps the next four years will be a wake-up call to many moderates and will make it more possible for us to win the White House back with a true conservative in the next election.

4) Let's consider how much control the President really has. While he shapes policy and makes nominations, the real power is in Congress. And historically, when one party has held both the White House and Congress not much has gotten accomplished. And when it has, there has been serious backlash at the next election.

5) The politics of this country seem to operate on a pendulum. This may be the final leftward swing before things start to move right again.

Finally, I must echo some of the thoughts mentioned by so many people tonight. This is a historic election. While I may not agree with Obama politically, I do think it is wonderful that this country may finally be becoming color-blind. Perhaps his election to the most powerful office in the world will show all Americans that if you truly have the drive you can accomplish anything, regardless of race, income status, upbringing, etc. His is truly the story of the American dream. And that does make me smile.

stylinmamaI agree completely.
trekkiemomWell said. My heart just aches to see our country move so far from God and His word and His principles.
luvbnamomGood summary and I agree with you
missybWell stated! :)
lifeisgooodI love having smart friends. Hey! Julie VanFleet for president!
beavermomI agree with you all, but I'm still a little nauseous from the crazy ride we are on.
crisfrogWell put, and it does my heart good to see so many countries excited for us, at least for now. I can go to Paris without being yelled at again! It's not much, but it's something.
robynbobmYour post was thoughtful.
DessertDivaI have to echo what I wrote on his post about the color blind thing.

I'm glad that this is further proof to the black Americans that the majority of people in the US are not racist. I'm glad for them and for the future of their kids that now they can be whatever they want to be.

However. Because of the abortion factor among others I did not vote for the black man running for president. His Socialist views scare me, although because God told me to I will submit to the leadership of this land.

Slavery happened a LONG time ago. I think black people have had the same opportunities that white people have had in the last 10-15 years...at least up here in the Northwest. I think those of us who are not discriminatory or bigots are punished because of the minority who are that way. People of color sometimes automatically assume that every white person is out to get them or to shun them which is not true. If this is what it takes to make them realize that they have the potential for more, then good. But that is the only positive thing I see coming from this man being elected. I'm sure God has his reasons, though, that we don't know yet and don't need to know yet.

(I didn't say "African Americans" because many black people are not of African descent, therefore it doesn't make sense to categorize all of them as African Americans.)

I like your post. I agree with her :)
robynbobmI see your point. I do think though that righteous leadership needs just as many prayers because they are more likely to do the right thing and take the heat for it. It's hard to have power and stay good.
robynbobmIt isn't reminders themselves, it is the change in them.
robynbobmBob might not get home in time, I feel really bleh from overexertion, and I wanted to let the drama lie. Also, Jonathan probably won't make it through class without needing taken out, and you can't hear comments from the cry room. So Wednesdays may be out for a while anyway.
robynbobmWell, we'll see. I don't feel good enough to go alone tonight, but if Bob is home in time and not half dead, who knows. As far as the drama, I am bothered by the fact that there are other Christians getting offended at what I say, because I don't say things maliciously. I obviously didn't make what I was saying come across right, which frustrates me. And then I can't control how the other people feel when they see me again, so I tend to want to lay low.
robynbobmAnd don't worry, I won't miss Sundays. But when it is sick season with a newborn and I may not get to hear anything anyway, it doesn't seem worth the risk usually.
jordanflyerI cant comment on Carries because I'm not on her friends list...
jordanflyerI somewhat agree, but I have seen things get out of hand when often they are just thoughts, (sometimes even justly merited ones) and they get attacked. Not just on Robyn's. But though I don't know excactly what was said (and previously who said it), I just wanted to remind that Christians need to treat each other the right way.
jordanflyerI see what you are saying about the name calling, but I wasn't meaning it seriously. The way I am is mostly goofy (especially on here). I joke with people, rarely do I pick on people and mean it.
zonanurseLook forward to seeing you again too :)
robynbobmDo you think your ped. would work well with my delayed/selective vaccination thoughts, homeschooling, prefer natural remedies, then drugs if needed, etc.?
robynbobmI know that my pediatrician was really good with my mom back when homeschooling was more frowned upon, but I don't like the Beaverton-Tualatin trek.
linz_fosterI bet you guys get a lot of animals out at your place. I agree with you - I'll pretend that squirrels are more like rabbits than rats, too. :) Fun having lunch with you guys today! :)
karijo1Not sure when but I'm open to ideas...
starryfishoh my goodness! I totally want them but we no longer have a space for them :( Which reminds me, I need to bring your chairs back to you. We can bring them on Wednesday. Is that ok? Thanks for thinking of me with the restaurant furniture! If I had a place for them, I'd totally snatch them up. We don't have storage either. Nuts!!
kikiHahaha, the sunrise...well I didn't exactly get to see it. I got to work, and then it got really busy. By the time I noticed outside it was already really sunny...SADNESS!
starryfishI do think I'll have a place eventually, but I really don't know when. Maybe we could store just a few things, like 4 tables and some chairs to go with them.

Ostrich 11-04-08 03:32pm PST
I can't stand the anxiety of election day! I feel like burying my head in the sand until tomorrow when it is all (hopefully) over. Maybe tomorrow I'll still want my head in the sand for the next four years...we'll see. It is not just the presidential election either. This year there were a lot of very interesting measures on the state ballot. Some could make dramatic changes. Breathe...breathe...

So, to try to pass the time since I cannot seem to focus on work (shhh, don't tell Aaron) I signed up for Facebook. I blame it all on Aaron. His class reunion is being planned almost entirely on that addicting site, so we had to sign him up yesterday. And it sucked me in right along with him. How did we ever spend our time before the internet? I don't remember.
DessertDivaWelcome to Facebook!!! :)
DessertDiva...another black hole to fall into instead of doing more productive things :) haha
robynbobmOh man, Facebook can be worse than here! I was on here and there ALL THE TIME in college.
crisfrogHappy to have you there!
