Nick's preschool class does a field trip every other month. In October it was the pumpkin patch, of course. Fabulous place with trains, boats, hay mazes, etc. In December they go to a tree farm. So I was asking if the school gets their tree donated. When they said no, they have to pay for it, I offered a free tree from our place. Not a big deal to us and helps the school, right? Well, somehow that got translated from Nick's teacher to the head teacher that we were willing to do the field trip up here. Ummm...okay... Have you been to our place? May be fun in the summer, but pretty boring in the winter. Lots of mud. Steep hillside. No cute little tree farm building. Nothing to do. Did I mention the mud and hillside? They were not to be deterred by my hesitance, though, and I couldn't come right out and say no to the cute little faces. So we are now hosting two field trips - one for the 3's and one for the 4's. Time to rope in my mom, the former preschool teacher, to help with this one.
In the meantime, we finally got some gravel down in front of the shop for parking/mud control. It also covers all the poplar leaves that were blanketing the ground. Every Sunday I would bring piles of leaves in the house on the heels of my shoes. It is amazing how many leaves you can fit on a 1" heel if you sink just the right amount into the mud and stab them at the proper angle. :) Gravel will be much better.
Now for some more laundry and work before the boys wake up. I will be constantly watching tonight, though, for Carrie's announcement - is it a boy or a girl...I'm so excited to find out!

I started a new group: ModernMoms
The group is intended for moms who may not subscribe to some of the more naturalistic philosophies. There seem to be two ends of the spectrum: the attachment parenting/crunchy moms on one end and the more scheduled/modern moms on the other. There is already a group for Crunchy Moms, so I created a group for the other end of the spectrum.
Let me know if you would like to join. |

First off today is a note of thanks to our veterans. Here is a quote from an email I received today: "Regardless of who you voted for last Tuesday, it is important to recognize that our republic remains a beacon of light throughout the world…..a place where legitimate disagreements take place but where the transfer of power is always peaceful. This election once again showcased the greatness of the American system of government, and we should all thank our veterans who offered themselves up to protect and secure that way of life."
Second is a tongue-in-cheek political quote from the same email: “If we got one-tenth of what was promised to us in these acceptance speeches there wouldn't be any inducement to go to heaven.” ~~Will Rogers
Finally, the pet-peeve of the day and subject of the title. I'm beginning to think that any package that states "Tear Here" for easy opening should come with a pair of scissors. How often does the "tear here" actually work with ease? For me, rarely. The other day it was a little package of baby formula. You'd thik they would test these things or add a perforation because when I'm holding a starving baby I don't have the time or ability to use both arms, brute strength, or a pair of scissors. That's when a husband comes in handy (okay, there are other times, but I really appreciated him more at that moment). My favorite example, though, was the Dryel home dry-cleaning package. It said "tear here" and pointed to the right. After several minutes of frustration I looked at the packaging. The notch meant for tearing was to the left. Grrr. |

Listening to McCain's concession speech I must admit that while he may not have been my choice as the Republican candidate, he is a very honorable, gracious, respectable man.
We now move forward with what I have previously thought of as a very scary option for President. So, in order to keep my sanity, I have to do a reality check. While my blood pressure may be up as a conservative, a Christian, a business owner, etc. regarding all the changes that could come, I have to look at what is the truth of the matter in the coming four years.
1) Lord willing, the sun will still rise tomorrow.
2) We must accept that we are not in control. Perhaps this is exactly what this country needed.
3) Perhaps the next four years will be a wake-up call to many moderates and will make it more possible for us to win the White House back with a true conservative in the next election.
4) Let's consider how much control the President really has. While he shapes policy and makes nominations, the real power is in Congress. And historically, when one party has held both the White House and Congress not much has gotten accomplished. And when it has, there has been serious backlash at the next election.
5) The politics of this country seem to operate on a pendulum. This may be the final leftward swing before things start to move right again.
Finally, I must echo some of the thoughts mentioned by so many people tonight. This is a historic election. While I may not agree with Obama politically, I do think it is wonderful that this country may finally be becoming color-blind. Perhaps his election to the most powerful office in the world will show all Americans that if you truly have the drive you can accomplish anything, regardless of race, income status, upbringing, etc. His is truly the story of the American dream. And that does make me smile.

I can't stand the anxiety of election day! I feel like burying my head in the sand until tomorrow when it is all (hopefully) over. Maybe tomorrow I'll still want my head in the sand for the next four years...we'll see. It is not just the presidential election either. This year there were a lot of very interesting measures on the state ballot. Some could make dramatic changes. Breathe...breathe...
So, to try to pass the time since I cannot seem to focus on work (shhh, don't tell Aaron) I signed up for Facebook. I blame it all on Aaron. His class reunion is being planned almost entirely on that addicting site, so we had to sign him up yesterday. And it sucked me in right along with him. How did we ever spend our time before the internet? I don't remember. |
