There are MANY that I Tivo and watch on my own time (Heroes, Chuck, Terminator:The Sarah Connor Chronicles, House M.D., Fringe) While my all time favorite is probably House, my new favorite I discovered this year (although the show is in it's fourth season) is "The Unit." Comes on Sunday nights at 10pm on CBS and stars the black guy from the All-State commercials. It's like watching an action movie every week!
I'm also a reality TV junkie and catch Survivor, Top Chef, and American Idol when possible. I get to watch a lot b/c my wife does a lot of planning in the evenings.
I am not sure I have just one favorite. I love Little House on the Prairie right now. While an old show, I am rediscovering the beauty of each delightful episode. As far as shows I regularly DVR, Jon & Kate + 8, 17 and Counting, Grey's Anatomy (although I am getting pretty ticked off with ABC's "agenda"), Desperate Housewives, Project Runway, Pushing Daisies, Ugly Betty, and Criminal Minds. I too like the Vicar of Dibley but I have seen each episode.
As far as comedy goes...........it's got to be THE OFFICE. Joe and I have recently been DVRing lots of old movies. The beauty of those old movies is that they couldn't rely on special effects, it was the plot and actors that made the movie a success.
One favorite? That's like trying to pick Grape or Cherry when it comes to snow-cones, they're both favorite. (If that doesn't make you laugh hysterically, let me know and I'll get you some Brian Regan material. Current favorite, Jon & Kate + 8. Previous favorite CSI Las Vegas (til I heard Grissom was leaving, then I've boycotted show). When it was on the air, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, I adore instant funny. Criminal Minds think alike is also great stuff. So I broke the rules.
Since the DVR (how in the world can you go back?), we watch way too much TV which makes this incredibly difficult. We've cut out ALL reality TV from our lives since we don't have time to watch people do stupid things for attention or any sort of "competition" betwixt D-listers. However, if they do somehow manage to get Brad, Angelina and Jen on Survivor...I'm there. SO, if I had to choose...The Unit is our joint favorite right now (Heros has fallen this season, but we're still along).
I watched from my living room on the other side of the country. I wished I had been there. Looked like a great day for a game. Some amazing plays and lots of energy. Good stuff!!
While watching the news this morning, a video of the Cabinent Room in the White House was shown. It struck me that there were a select number of seats AT the table, but...there were wall to wall seats behind the table seats. The men/women who sit AT the table are there to make the hard decisions, to do the heavy lifting, to take on the responsibilities that require knowledge of circumstances, a steadfast determination to make the choices that will benefit all of the citizens, taking note of their diversity and needs.
The Cabinent Room is not unlike a playing field...the actual players who get the job done and provide the entertainment; and the bleacher seats. The fans that get to sit back and enjoy, second guess, yell and go home either elated OR disgruntled.
A couple of musings for me this morning. At which table would I want to sit? (For the sake of this post, I'm eliminating all forms of spiritual, religious and Sacred tables). The second musing is...am I (in general)contented to sit in the bleachers and second guess or loudly cheer. If I am contented to be an observer ONLY...then WHY is that so?
Might be time to pull up a chair.
What about you? Muse with me for the next couple of days!
From my experience with some state legislators, aids and issues, it is the people who sit in the peripheral seats who do all the leg work and make the actual recommendation for the elected legislator to then take over ownership of the view. Just like in any non-spiritual hierarchy -- sometimes there is top-down vision and direction, but often it is the management layer who takes credit for the work and ideas actually being done by the minions.
Not necessarily talking about government...just positions of authority in general. I agree, while the back seaters sometimes do all of the leg work...the buck has to stop somewhere. The second seaters get to brainstorm, stir and bring fresh ideas, however...sometimes a bottom line has to be drawn. So...given your thoughts, why wouldn't a 'minion' aspire to a seat AT the table?
I would think that most of the time...the table seaters have paid their dues, been the minions, and have had the drive and determination to EARN their place-setting.
To use your analogy of the stadium, I see that the cheering crowd has a lot to do with how the game is played. So much so that my husband's playstation NCAA game has stadium pulse gauge and a momentum setting. I say all that to say that the ones in the peripheral probably have a lot more input then seen in that room! :) Good thoughts. I would want to be at the table in the action!
Move over. I want to sit at the table! I would hope to be a 'Mr Smith goes to Washington' or like the movie 'Dave'. I would take a shot at doing what was right/correct, not obliged to any special interest. Make the decision on the facts. I know, novel idea- eh?!
My children will tell you that I am an embarrassing, loud cheerer from the stands. So I can give it a good go from the cheap seats too. But I still want to be at the table. I can solve the world's problems with a little help from my friends...
I'd rather sit on the back chairs. I don't really wish to attain the "prestige" of the table chairs. I just want to get the work done. It seems that someone always wants something from the big-wigs.
Well...looking at this from a governmental perspective as opposed to a sports analogy...I'd rather bring the ideas to the table. Do the legwork. Hands dirty. I don't want the responsibility of making those kinds of decisions. It's nice to think about all the great things that you can do at that table...but great doesn't mean good. There's a lot of hard things too. I'm pondering this from the perspective of my job...I negotiate contracts for research on behalf of UF. My boss signs them. If I do my job, we both look good and I can make her life much easier. But if she doesn't pay attention, listen to me, answer my questions, help me sort through scenarios...I can't do my job and she will fail. Her name is on legal documents for babillions of dollars that can help or hang a major university, end up in a major lawsuit or violate regulations, land someone in jail for not educating someone on export control laws, ruin a researcher's career by loosing the intellectual property on a "Gatorade". From where I'm at right now...I don't want her pen. That may change down the road...she seems to think she'll give it to me...but I don't know if I'm comfortable with that kind of responsibility...at least from where I'm at today.
Thank you. It was a fun day...it only took half an hour! I would probably want to be at the table, especially if I had done the work, and knew what decisions needed to be made. Otherwise....why even be in the room. It seems kind of pointless if you can't make any suggestions.
I love what sweetlove said... ha!! I think I would prefer to be at the table. I just finished watching the Little House on the Prairie episode entitled "Laura Ingalls Wilder" where Laura and Almanzo have a big arguement over her being offered a teaching job. He loses the crop and she says she wants to take the job and help earn the money to keep their land. He says he would never allow it... that HE will provide for them. As a result, they would have to postpone their wedding for another 1 to 2 years. They get mad at one another. Laura's heart begins breaking because the realization set in that she would never get to teach and was never even permitted the chance to even think about it. I see this example the same way. I don't want to be told what will happen or what won't happen. I wanna make my own decisions!! :)
I have to agree. To me, it's not really what do I want to put my 2 cents in for, but what am I willing to take responsibility for. At this point of my life, it's all I can do just to sit at my own kitchen table.
Next time you are in Alachua, try Main Street Pie. They are right on Main Street. Ask her about it or she is also a big fan. Looking forward to spending the afternoon in the Big House. It's been too long...
