A Wonderful Holiday 12-02-08 08:43am CST

We had a great Thanksgiving!!! He broke out the rolling pin and pie pans and whipped out three pies (pumpkin, cherry, and pecan). All were good, but the pecan was fantastic and was gone by the time the first Thanksgiving meal was finished. All of our family was here + the great young man we will be adding the end of May. Alot of changes coming soon, so I treasure all of these family times. She will be graduating in 2 weeks and has an interview lined up in Memphis. She plans on moving there after she graduates. Then, of course, the wedding in May.

She will be a senior next year. In fact, this morning she was remarking that she is now the "senior" in vball workouts since the true seniors are not coming to work out any more.

Please keep his mom in your prayers. She has taken a turn for the worse over the last month with a diagnosis of Parkinsons and a fall and can now barely get around on her own. I am very concerned and wish I knew the very best way to help her.

We are headed to Regional Playoffs!!! 11-08-08 06:18pm CST

For the first time in BHS history the volleyball team is headed to the Regional Playoffs. The beat Mansfield Timberview in 5 games. They one the first two, lost the third game 26-28, lost the fourth, and won the fifth 15-13. Why must they do this to the fans. It is hard on us.

They play Arlington Sequin on Tuesday night at 7:00pm at Grand Prairie High School.

BTW - the last time the Hawks made it to Area Playoffs, Susan was a senior.

If you live in the area, we would love to have you join us on Tuesday. It will probably be a nail biter and you will get your money's ($5.00) worth.

derbydi

Good luck to the team!

Voted! 11-04-08 08:45am CST

Thankful we live in a country where we have a voice in the government. More thankful that we serve a God that is in control of the nations.

Question: In Australia, we found out that the citizens are compelled to vote. They receive a fine if they do not show up at their precinct to vote on election day.

What do you think? Would this be a good idea to implement?

bparker1000

No, then we get even more people at the poles who don't know things about who they are voting for, voting shouldn't be a requirement, its a freedom to vote, and those who use this freedom vote, and some choose not to, and don't.

yellowrose

^^agreed. i think that election day should be a holiday though.

ed

for the record, people aren't required to vote, but they are required to check in at their polling place. They do have the freedom to not vote if they choose.

kasa_mom

^^Thanks ed. ed is one of our new friends from Australia. Do you know if they have done any studies to see what percentage choose not to vote once they get to the polling place.

ed

yeah, the air races were cool! Re:voting...I don't know about any studies, but I've had a few Aussies tell me that they don't always vote unless it is a Prime Minister election or if there is a referendum they are interested in. Also, I think a higher % of Aussies pay attention to their politics, though I can't say whether this is due to the required attendance.

parker1000

Citizens of Peru are required to vote. In some cases, they have to travel significant distances to do so, because it's tied to a birthplace, or something like that, unless you jump through some hoops to move it. (I lack details, obviously.)

sparker

I was about to say that. Well that they require everyone to vote. They also make voting day a national holiday so they CAN vote. And then they stain their fingers so you know who voted. Also, they have more than one election where they have tons of candidates and then they narrow it down. I would prefer to vote this way instead of having the one chance primary and election day dilemma. I believe that requiring people to vote does no good. If people don't want to vote, then my vote counts more.

laughing_eyes

I like to vote early :)

You Asked For It - You Got It 10-20-08 03:46am CST

Jet Lag is tougher going east. Kelly and I are both up at 3:00am so I started working on slideshow. Got flight and first two days completed.

Flight and Day One

Day Two - Part I

Day Two - Part II

Okay I know I turned the pics that needed to be rotated, but I'm not going to try to figure out what happened now. It is 5:00am.

Do you want more ?!? We were there 16 days :)

BTW - I also put great descriptions with the pictures but they don't show up on the slideshow :( They further explain some of the pics. Any photobucket gurus with ideas on that. I'll just have to put those thoughts in the journal. Okay - I'm going to try to get a nap before taking her to school.

crumpledart

Wow! Those are amazing! I loved the picture of the Opera House at night and the Cathedral is gorgegeous. I'll have to hear about the "rocks" and the terraces. Those sound like they would have interesting stories to go with them. Glad you had so much fun!

laughing_eyes

Very fun! Those meat pies are different from the ones in South Africa. I miss their meat pies. AND afternoon tea.

yellowrose

great pictures! thanks for sharing.

yellowrose

the brownies are SO easy. one box mix of chewy fudge brownies made according to package directions. pour half of mix into pan, place 2 Hershey's Symphony bars on top of batter and pour remaining batter on top and bake according to directions. they are chocolate heaven!

chispa

Wow! I love the Opera House at night!

I lost your email when my computer crashed recently. Send me an email, so I'll have it again. I wanted to send an email so we can plan lunch to hear about your trip and celebrate Karen's birthday. KP
