Where Did That Come From? 10-07-07 11:41pm CST

Most mornings during my drive to work I am still trying to wake up, so the radio is just something for noise, but the other day the following useless trivia caught my attention. So most of you know I enjoy useless trivia… Hope you will enjoy.

In merry old England, they started running out of room to bury people, so they started digging up coffins and would take the bones to the "bone house". When opening these coffins, they found that 1 in 25 coffins had scratch marks on the inside. Realizing that they were burying people alive, they came up with a solution. They tied a string onto the "dead" person's hand, buried them, and tied the other end of the string to a bell and then looped the string over a nearby tree branch. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (grave yard shift) to listen for the bell. If the person revived enough to ring the bell (saved by the bell and/or dead ringer), their survivors would rush out and dig them up.

So the next time you use one of these saying, “graveyard shift”, ”saved by the bell” or “dead ringer”, you will know where the saying came from.

rmpmullinax

Now that's cool stuff!

rmpmullinax

Reminds me of when we lived near Augusta, GA, we visited this old cotton trading station. When the building was being renovated they discovered the old chalk board where they kept all the daily prices for each type or grade of cotton, it was a huge wall, coved with all chalkboard, and on it were the terms "fair" and "midland", hence the term "fair to midland", which so of us old timers use to answer someone who may ask "how's it going?" ...reply "Oh, fair to midland". Which by the way is not good. Fair was as stated but midland was the grade below it, not as good of quality.

rmpmullinax

Also in the same building was this old weaving loom, children made up the song "pop goes the weasle" because in the olden days they would weave on this type of loom until the weasle (which was part of the machine) would make a "pop" sound meaning that the loom was full!

kris

What if a strong wind blew through the area and moved the string enough to move the bell?? I knew you would be so sad if you couldn't see Apache's picture up on the blog...Christmas...well, no new plans yet, Aaron is still tryin to pull some strings at work, either way the weekend before I know we will be there.

ncreaves

I needed to know that trivia--thanks! :) ...and it's English which makes it even better!

guygirl

That is morbid.

outofafrica

Hi Kay! Good to hear from you! How's it going? Me? I'm in the process of moving from TX to GA. I'll be a lot closer come Nov. so I'll really work on trying to get down to S'land to see everyonoe. It

outofafrica

Oops! hit the wrong key! . . . It's been too long, I know. Maybe we can remedy that soon. I updated my blog about my move and all. Several people on Mandee's site saw my post and wrote me so I thought I'd let everyone know what's going on. This thing is really a cool way of keeping up with folks. I hope and trust things are going well for you. I think I've heard you have a new house, maybe two since the yellow one I know? I'm going to end this chit caht for now and add a "useless trivia" story to the others. Your is really interesting by the way. Cheers for now!

outofafrica

I heard on Paul Harvey several years ago that in the 18 th century the Puritans considered "good-bye" to be swearing and taking the Lord's name in vain be cause it was a contraction of "God be with ye." The considered the contraction irreverent! "Now you know the rest of the story." Makes you wonder what sayings and terms our culture has given rise to that our descendants will be learning the "rest of the story" about, perhaps even Paul Harvey's famous line!

kacky

Glad I didn't live in England.

kacky

Oh and by the way I'm trying to learn how to post stuff so just be patient. ha ha. Some of us aren't as bright as others.

jandth

Hey Kay, I'm gonna be an Alabamian again. Thought you'd want to know.

ncreaves

Wished I'd known that you were coming this way. We would have loved to have you. We enjoyed the singing Friday night, but had to leave to get Mom home to bed. It was a long day for her, but Dad loves to get out and sing too so we decided to take her. My daughter-in-law was there for the Sat. session. We couldn't make it. Hopefully next year it will continue to grow. What a great way to spend a weekend. I think Mandy told us ya'll had gone to another one before. How do you get the info on these. Maybe someday Brownie and I can get away and go to one. If you come this way again, Please remember us!! :)

ncreaves

By the way, we are hosting a weekend singing/hiking/games/cookout, etc... this Friday-Sunday. Fly down and I'll pick you up or drive--you could stay here. Next year if you do the singing in Gainesville, we can be your hotel. We'd love that.

rmpmullinax

hey kaka

loveofjebs

Great I'll send you an assigned family tomorrow. As far as my kids, I'm not getting them much this year, trying to go simple. Will wants a bb gun, I'd like to see you try to carry that on the plane. :) Anything you get will be fine, but I'll let you know if they ask for anything specific. Getting excited, should be fun!

loveofjebs

Oh, if you haven't gotten the ark, then don't bother. IF it's that smal, it will be very easy to lose.

Who Packs Your Parachutes? 08-13-07 07:38pm CST

I received the following email the other day and wanted to pass it on.

Charles Plumb was a US Navy jet pilot in Vietnam, After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a Surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands

He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison.

He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience!

One day, while Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table come up and said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!”

“How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb.

“I packed you parachute.” The man replied.

Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude.

The man pumped his hand and said, “I guess it worked!”

Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man.

Plumb says, “I kept wondering what he had looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat; a bib in the back; and bell-bottom trousers.

I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said Good morning, how are you? Or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor.

Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor has spent at a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn’t know.

Now, Plumb asks his audience,

“Who’s packing your parachute?’

Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day.

He also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory-he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, and his spiritual parachute.

He called on all these supports before reaching safety.

Sometime in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important.

We may fail to say hello, please, or thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize people who pack your parachutes.

Thanks to so many of you, for packing my parachute. And a special thanks for my dear friend who is continually packs my chute.

rmpmullinax

OK!! We're even now

squirt17

On the Road Again 08-08-07 10:41pm CST

Another VBS has come and gone…. I hope and pray the teen class will remember some of what we studied this past week. The week had a big impact on me spiritually. I desire more that ever to be poor in spirit, to hunger and thirst for righteousness, to be merciful, to be pure in heart, to mourn and to look at myself and other as Jesus would.

I added a new link VBS2 for additional pics.

After Friday night’s VBS I headed out, with three of my dearest friends, for a long weekend of R&R at the lake. The weekend was spent sleeping late, eating too much, a good Saturday afternoon nap, boating ridding, tubing and nightly HGTV. O’ and how can I forget learning to knee board, lets say I have a lot more to learn. A great weekend was had by all.

Tuesday morning my feet hit the floor running. I had an early morning flight to Portland OR. The Atlanta to Portland flight was a very long flight, 2300 miles \ 4 ½ hours. Just as we were approaching Portland I was prompted to look out my window. As I turned, not sure what I was going to see, the next moment was breathing taking. It was Mt Hood. It looked like I could reach out and touch the massive mountain. It was at that point I wondered how people can believe the wonders of this earth just happened.

After we landed we rented and car and headed out for a 2 hour road trip. We ended up at Astoria, OR, our final destination. Astoria is located in the Northwest corner of OR, on the Columbia River. It is very beautiful old town. Nice place to be, if you have to be out of town. Below are a few pictures from around town. Hope you enjoy

Astoria Column (its the object sticking up in the middle of the pic)

I forget what you do... I do remember that you travel a lot, right!? Great pics!! :)

rmpmullinax

such a hard life!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rmpmullinax

we enjoyed the weekend too! School was smoothe sailing this morning. She wanted to be sure that I just "drop" her off today. So I did! She made 3 new friends and there is one stinky boy in her class that talks all the time (imagine that) She did go with a purse today in tow, I guess she has it all figured out!

rmpmullinax

Angelica called and left a message wandering if we could do lunch Sat. I don't think it will be possible for me, but you may want to consider it for yourself

rmpmullinax

Rando is in BHam (oh, I forgot you know that ;), so Peri and I will be solo tonight, hopefully we can get in bed early, have a good day! TALK LATER

paulakbeachgirl

Beautiful Kay! Have a safe trip!

lguy

Obviously I don't get around to checking this often. I loved the VBS pics.

lguy

Work is going really good. Wednesday was mine & Gary's 21st anniversary & he sent me a beautiful bouqet of flowers. It brightened up me office. I haven't put anything else in it yet. mary said she's going to print out clip art if I don't get something put up soon.

ncreaves

Good photos. I love to travel I'm leaving next week --Tuesday-- to be in Mex, a week. I wish I could stay longer but I'm happy just to see them. I need a grandkid fix! I sure miss them. Yes, you definitely need to go sometime. And I'll check out that VBS material--sounds interesting.

FINALLY THE FIRST NIGHT OF VBS!!!!! 07-30-07 11:29pm CST

After 150 feet of chicken wire, 20 bottles of glue, a truck load of sand, 4 too many walls to faux paint, 5 life size drawings to color , dying the tent 2 different times and may hours of hard work the Cave Room was finished and the diggers all came (our theme is "Can You Dig It).
I would say the first night was a success.

Many thanks to all the members of the “A” team, MaMa Henny, Kory, Marissa, Lynn and Bryan the builder. Way to go Bryan. Think we all would agree the time spent has already been worth it.

I have posted a few pictures, clink on the VBS link. Enjoy. By the way Kory was the photographer for the evening, which will explain some of the pics

HELP!

It's Getting a Little Sticky

I Can Do It....

You want me to do what??

Thank you for making a vbs post KayKay. My mom was going to make me write a post about it on hers. YES!!! I'm off the hook.

melbuc

Hey Kay, the pictures look great..sorry I'm missing out on all the fun! But I will be back in a few weeks..looking forward to seeing you all again!

ncreaves

Just figured out that you are katiejohn. Mandy's blog made me wish i had had a chance to get to know you better. If you are ever in the Atlanta area, we'd love to have you visit. The VBS looks fun and productive no doubt. What was your theme? We have a small group because this is a new work so a VBS isn't do-able. We are planning a camping trip together with a devtional theme. I teach 5 very smart kids ages 9-13 and we are doing Our Spiritual Heritage. I love that series--lots of work, but worth it. Jeb and Sheila sure love and miss you all.

hrharris

Looks like so much fun! The first year at PHR (1999) we had VBS and I LOVED it - all the decorating and to see the kids faces as they walked into the transformation and how they learned.....I miss it. We haven't done it since, unfortunately there were some who felt the building wasn't the place for that (all the decorating). Anyway, I pray VBS is a huge success for you all!

guygirl

Well thank you KK. I try....sometimes I just can't help messing with Marissa though.

squirt17

Thanks! I'll bring back lots of pictures, and a pineapple! See ya in a couple of weeks! Hope the rest of VBS goes well!

paulakbeachgirl

I found you KK..thanks for letting me (us) be a part of this! Love ya!

paulakbeachgirl

Yes, I am so glad you told me about this site! This is FANTASTIC! We will have to get together one weekend when we can just hang out and have nothing to do! Let's stop talking and get planning!! :0)
