well, it's not really an update, but i've been thinking about this...
let's say you have a quarter.
if you flip the coin, the odds of heads and tails coming up is 50/50, right? (technicalities aside, since everyone knows that the tails side is slightly heavier, therefore slightly changing the odds.)
right.
so each time you flip this quarter, you have a 50% chance of it landing on heads. if you flip it 9 times and it lands on heads 9 times that would be unusual right? what then would be the odds that it lands on heads a 10th time? is it less than 50%? i realize each flip has a 50/50 chance, but c'mon, the odds of it landing heads 10 times in a row is very slim. does this affect the outcome of the 10th flip by itself? maybe through some "fate" or something like it that alters odds and statistics? like the coin is just being drawn to land on tails because it is supposed to and would be just too weird to land on heads 10 times in a row?

Think about it this way: the probability of any given *sequence* of heads and tails is the same. While you may be more likely to have five heads and five tails than 10 heads, the probability of the sequence HTHTHTHTHT occurring is equal to the probability of the sequence HHHHHHHHHH occuring. Our minds just happen to like the first sequence better because it fits our definition of randomness.
I can't wait to see you either! Are you going to be up for thanksgiving? I was thinking that I would make two pans of broccoli casserole since all you boys will be there...and with extra cheese. Um...I don't know if my cooking is any better although I did make some amazing meatloaf a while back. I think all the boy cousins are going to be staying at our house this year...so i've been working on my cinnamon tart!
