Birmingham Mayor Arrested 12-01-08 02:22pm CST
The infamous Larry Lankford was arrested this morning having been indicted by the FBI on bribery, tax evasion, and other corruption charges. His two accomplices immediately turned themselves in upon hearing of his arrest - that doesn't sound good for him.

I am going to miss the guy. He was always saying and proposing crazy stuff. For example, within about a 1 month period he announced:

1. All Birmingham kids should receive free health care.
2. All Birmingham kids should receive a free laptop computer.
3. Birmingham should build a $400 million dollar dome with the hopes of attracting a Pro Sports team.

And my personal favorite...

4. Birmingham should put in a bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

One thing you could say about Larry Lankford, local politics were never boring.
jayU are a funny man :o) . . . I have never seen Birmingham. I take it, it doesn't quite have the appeal of L.A. for the international community?
pollymhdo you live in Birmingham? My sister lives in Columbiana which is about 1 hour South of Birmingham.
cmvermonthaha! maybe he'll run from prison..

Successful Thanksgiving 11-29-08 03:38pm CST
I ate a moderate amount of food and very reasonable amount of dessert. I can't take too much credit for self-discipline though; I was fighting a cold on Friday and had little appetite.

In any case, we had a great time with Steph's family on Thursday and my family on Friday.

My grandfather (dad's father) turned 90 this week.
jeffhyeah, i missed seeing you all too. Should be there next year though.
bravedaveYea, I am among those qualifying more as a "Phanatic" as much as a fan... haha. My brother has talked about Finebaum and I've read his stuff but I've never heard him. Hadn't thought about it. I might have to do that with the buildup to this coming week. So, uh, any of the brethren there got some UA-UF tickets that they wanna get rid of??? haha, j/k

College Football Jokes 11-22-08 11:25am CST
My cousin Joel forwarded a list of Ohio St vs. Michigan jokes. I created a room for those interested in reading through them.

All of them are funny, but here is one to get you started:

What does a Michigan Grad say to an Ohio State Grad?
"Welcome to McDonalds. May I help you?".

It reminded me of a hilarious thing I heard on the radio before the big Ohio St. vs. USC game that was played in California back in Sept. A USC fan wrote in with a “Ohio St. Fan To Do List.” Here are several items from memory.

1. Take out second mortgage on trailer to purchase plane and game tickets.

2. Purchase 5 gallon bucket of SPF 5000 sun tan lotion to cover white pasty body.

3. Rent 15 passenger van and take out seats in order to transport morbidly obese wife and children to the game.

I think one of the OSU fan responses started with something like, Game Day prep for MALE USC fan..."take off cucumber eye peel and run bubble bath."
jifennerhLol, those jokes are hilarious.
cmvermontyeah.. wow.
i was rooting for oklahoma tonight tho, cuz that puts texas in the 3-way tie.
that was not the same tt team that we a couple weeks ago.
cmvermonthonestly tho, i still don't think alabama could hang with texas tech.
bravedaveExcuse me, there's a Bama fan in the house, haha. Saban is a former DB and is known for his prowess as a defensive schemer. I was looking forward to a TT-UA matchup. They would not have put up more than 35 against us. Their defense isn't good enough to stop our ball-control type offense. Woulda been fun and still could happen. But to think that TT would blow Bama away is a bit of a s-t-r-e-t-c-h.
tnerbydoomI think Oklahoma revealed what a good defense can do to Texas Tech. Tech is a great team, but facing an SEC defense would be a difficult match up for them. OK played out of their minds on Defense, but that is normal in the SEC.

How to Deal with Pirates 11-19-08 12:44pm CST
I am sucker for reading the "comments section" after online articles. After an article about the Somali Pirate situation, I found this comment to be right on the money:

What the world needs now is an end to this violence and a series of strongly worded resolutions from the U.N.. If that doesn't work then even more strongly worded resolutions are called for. The strongest words the U.N. has at its command may even be required! That should do it.

Stumypete, washington, d.c., usa

jdiemanVery funny, but I hope it does not come down to the strongest words, that would be harsh for any situation.
madtomkiddCouldn't "peace keeping forces" be deployed to "restore peace?" (^_^)
tnerbydoomThe criminals and gangsta nations of the world are shaking in their boots over those strongly worded UN (non)resolutions. Especially since the US and GB are The only countries that ever expect anyone follow the rules. It reminds me of parents, "Shhh! i'll spank you, do that again and I'll spank you...if you do that one more time I will spank you...1....2....3...4....I'm going to spank you...do you want a spanking....1....2....3" I think the parents should be disciplined...We need a committee to punish the UN for being a complete failure (I mean that sarcastically, please no more committees)
jhaganDon't forget to give them "the evil eye". That should make them run home crying.
bravedaveThey probably need a hug and some emotional reassurance. They probably didn't get that growing up. You'd be surprised what a hug and a smile will do to a pirate. Their heart melts everytime.
tnerbydoomhaha...Maybe Michael Moore will make a movie for us about all of this.
jenleagueSadly the 1..2..3.. method does not work. Maybe they are trying to figure out where the naughty step might be. By they way the 123 method will catch you off guard. esp.. with dads and their little girls. Just wait you say it before you even know it.
dressednyellawow...it's like saying to kids, "if you don't stop then I'm going to give you a spanking....do you want a spanking, 'cause I'm going to give you one, seriously, you're really going to get a spanking!"
jifennerhlol, ^that hits the nail on the head.

Roll Tide Roll! 11-16-08 09:54pm CST
Alabama keeps it up. Florida is looking really good though, not to mention that Auburn still has a decent defense. Their offense is completely dysfunctional though.

I am still not a believer in the Big 12. They obviously have some great offenses and I have no doubt several teams could beat SEC teams on any given Saturday. I just don't think they could consistently put up 45 points playing against our smashmouth SEC defenses. Just last year a rather meager AL team beat the high flying Texas Tech in their bowl game. So I hope we can survive FL to get our shot at a title.

bravedaveActually that UA-TT game was at least a couple years ago, under Shula. I was at that game and it was fun. We won on one of the ugliest game winning field goals I've even seen. The ball was wobbling every way and just barely made it past the crossbar. I was sitting around some TT friends. When TT beat UT a few weeks ago, I called a friend and said "Hope to see you in Miami." I'd be interested to see their high flying O versus our grind it out O and suffocating D. But, that's obviously get ahead of things. For now, let's just ROLL over Auburn.
kon_tikigood call Dave...TT was 9-2 going into the bowl and had blown out many of their opponents. AL shut them down to 10 points. of course their QB and WR have alot more experience this time around.
callmehandsIt would be nice to Bama up there again. Hopefully the players can keep level heads and just play football.
tnerbydoomI would love to see Bama take out FL, but they will have their hands full, that's for sure.
cmvermonti'd like to see any sec defense get through the TT o-line. they're a wall. it's almost unfair.
