What a day! 07-31-08 09:20pm EST
I try not to daily post, but this day can not go by without mention. I can not express how much fun I had with my girls. The funny thing is, it all happened in little West Alexandria, Ohio.

We headed out to Heaven's Corner Zoo for our homeschool field trip. I had invited some friends of ours who are not in the group, so all of my kids "local friends" were there. The place blew me away. They are a rescue zoo and do zero advertising. It was quiet and clean, and not "commercial" or flashy. The first thing we saw when we approached was a 12 week old tiger cub, hanging out by the entrance house. On the porch was a young wallaby. Before I knew it, my children ended up petting and playing with both. The place was entirely covered with shade trees and we saw so many of God's amazing creatures. We were no further than four feet from anything including: wolves, wolf cubs, foxes, porcupines, snakes, turtles, crocodiles, monkeys, Russian boars, donkeys, parrots, lynx, panthers, cougars, grown tigers and big brown bears who enjoyed hand fed powdered donuts. My breath was taken away as I watched my little Willow hold a Honduras milk snake that looked just like a poisonous coral snake. We ended the day with a great picnic with friends and a little more tiger cub play.

Some of you may know my new favorite shop is a little estate sale shop in West Alex. You can find old and rare stuff for a steal. I picked up an antique chair(for the sewing table I picked up there on my last visit,) a turquoise rotary dial phone for my new yellow retro kitchen, 14 pristine vintage handkerchiefs (that I will turn into treasures to sell) and a few things for the girls- all for $30. We then headed across the street to "Barneys" for ice cream.

By this time I knew the girls had to be "toast." But we had passed a few great looking farm markets and I was hoping to stop at one. They were still bright eyed when we got there and we saw a big sign that read "Pick your own raspberries!" We were all excited. We spent hours in the warm sun picking the fragrant berries. Of course, Willow ate one for every one we put in the bucket. (I have learned that eating berries while picking is perfect farm etiquette.) The day was hot, but the breeze was wonderful and the sky was so blue. It was only my girls and I in a wonderful land of raspberry bushes and peach and apple trees. We talked about God, laughed and sang. They were beautiful, carrying the buckets of berries, giggling and working hard. I could not believe it when the cell phone rang and I realized Ben was already heading home from work. We checked out the rest of the wonderful orchard, including the animals and flowers. We then picked up a yummy Sarah's pizza on the way home. It was a beautiful day. Even with all these words, I can not begin to describe it.

It was a great day to end July on.

cmayThanks for the info.

If you still want to order Pampered Chef go here
cmayNot sure when her show closes.
waerickI'm glad I was able to humor you.
matermagistraThat zoo looks amazing! Lovely memories made!
matermagistraYou need to read Blueberries for Sal next time you go berry picking.
all_gods_childrenWhat fun!!! I just love the pictures and look at those yummie berries!!!!
sweetisthesongYea thanks for the info....I love tea rooms and I love to haunt places like that.............Have you been to the creation Museum? Your kids would love that..we went with a group from Knollwood and we d like to go again ....they have the Planitarium which is a must see and a petting Zoo for the kids and all kinds of interesting things !!!!!
tommyswifeOkay, I do not think that we are going to get up there this week. What does you next week look like? Or the week after that? If this is not a good time, that is fine. I just want you to see Emma and I want to see The farmer's wife and her animals!!! :) Would you all be willing to do that zoo/farm again (if they are open) and maybe hit your antique/estate store?
tommyswifeHow about Wednesday? I still would love to go to the antique store in west alex! If you are willing to go so am I! JT has boots! I will bring them! He will love tromping in his puddle jumping boots, so now they may be his farm tromping boots! :) If Wednesday is not working let me know!
this_old_manMy birthday is on Valentine's day as well, I have to give my wife a gift on my birthday! No fair! :)
smiley_bethWell I got a sub teacher for Sunday, so it is looking good for this weekend. I am so excited!
waerickConcerning your comment on Beth's, I had already thought about that. :)
smiley_bethYeah, I think Caleb was trying to help in an area we didn't get around to this year. We usually shave Lug, but this year we just let him shed. So I think Caleb decided it was his job. He has been very interested in Lug lately- telling me to make sure I tell Lug goodnight or good morning; asking to take him on a walk; standing on the back porch just talking to him; feeding (sometimes too often) and watering him, etc. I never expected this though. For one, who would have thought the dog would sit still long enough.
grannyJust thought I would check in -- what a great day you had. AND the ability to recognize value in antiques! Wish I did -- or at least recognize what those old things were used for...
whipsmilebut you wouldn't change where you are for anything. :-)

thirties will be cool...I begin mine in 8 months.
smiley_bethThank you SO much for such a fun filled weekend. We really packed it in. I really needed that Ben and Stacey pick me up and the West Carrollton ego boost :) Thanks for welcoming us last minute. Please e-mail that address and thanks again for everything. I keep thinking about the damage I could do with a little more time and a few less children in that thrift store. Next time!
leighbee09Hey Stacey! Hopefully this will help us stay in touch a little better. And I don't know how soon I'd be able to, but Ben mentioned something about having me come over to hang out with the fam sometime, which I'm all up for.
cruisingmomI know Abe & Linda are excited to get the new house built and settle into their 'new chapter' in life. Yesterday was long and they were not finished when I left around 9pm. They are amazing.
waerickI expected a comment on the "little treasures".
waerickIt made my stomach drop when I took it!
quiltedmamaWe don't have our own goats... a family at church has a little farm and we buy from them. They are nubians and alpines, and mixes of those two. Great milk, and great for soap and shampoo! We just looked at a house today (we live in the city right now) that had land and a little barn perfect for chickens and a few goats... praying about it!

August already? 07-30-08 10:04pm EST
The yellow is almost finished. I am happy and am not tempted to "re-paint," like I usually am after a project. However, without a doubt, the kitchen is the WORST room in the house to paint.

Pickle making was fun. I don't think I have ever owned so many pickles at one time. Oh well, if the Lord ever sends another baby, I will be in good shape.

Off to another field trip tomorrow. Have I mentioned what a blessing homeschooling is already? There are so many wonderful things I did not expect, such as opportunities with so many people, looking to live for God.

Book recomendation: Family Driven Faith by Vodie Baucham Jr. GREAT STUFF!

What are you reading?
smiley_bethAs much as I should be reading an encouraging, helpful, life-lesson book, I am in need of escape right now and am reading Anne of Green Gables. I have seen the movies but have never read the books. I love sequals and thought this would be a fun one to get into. Thanks for the prayers and even more, for how you understand me. Miss you.
vanessamhey, where do you all live now? I am asking becasue when i lived in dayton it was my job to plan field trips and finf places that were free or cheap! So if you all are still in the dayton area let me know and i can give you some ideas!
tommyswifeYeah, just getting into my bible has been a challenge right now. Hope to see you Friday!
stu192I've got a lot I'd like to read. The books are piling up and I'm sure one day I will. I try to let Amanda get some reading when she gets a book (she reads fast). She needs the outlet/encouragement/entertainment more than me most of the time.
racheldeeI'm so glad you have happy memories of your Great-Grandmother's yellow kitchen! I think a yellow room is just about the happiest thing you can have in a home, so I'm happy you've made the decision to paint (even though that's not a fun job). Hope you get done with your project soon, and I can't wait to see your home one of these days...
cruisingmomtell Willow she forgot to tell Aunt Rachel that she can snap her finger too. Glad to hear of the whistle...it is a fun thing to accomplish. When Willow snapped her finger for me, I asked "where did you learn to do that?". She proudly beamed "my mama taught me".
whipsmileI am reading The Tao of Pooh. Almost done, I need to finish it today to put it on my July book list.

and now I want a pickle. :-)
amcmichaelYeah thanks now I want a pickle too! I am supposed to be reading "Bold Love" I haven't started it yet. Its a help me heal book!
matermagistraWell, since I've been down and out due to surgery, I've been pre-reading some of Tessa's books for school. We are using Sonlight this year with her, studying ancient cultures. I read Mara, Daughter of the Nile and The Golden Goblet, both of which I could hardly put down, they were so good!

I also read A Thomas Jefferson Education Home Companion, and another book on Elizabeth I that Tessa picked out for me at the library because she knew I liked to study her. I am currently reading The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir, and The Padeia Proposal: An Educational Manifesto by Mortimer J. Adler, and Hittite Warrior, a book from Tessa's curriculum set in the time of the Judges that looks really interesting too.
matermagistra^ sorry that wasn't all supposed to be italicized!

angie12Farmer Brown Shears His Sheep & any of the Fancy Nancy books are the most requested titles at our house this week

Mellow Yellow 07-15-08 12:11am EST
So, I know this is silly and really not worth your time, and I am sure there is deeper conversation to be had on here. I am just not up to any of it.

Today was a lovely day, for several reasons. One of those reasons is that my kitchen is gradually turning yellow. We have had this dark red "apple" wall paper since we moved in. It may be pretty to some people's liking and I have tried to live with it, mainly to exercise contentment and frugality. Well, as of next month we will have lived here a year and enough is enough.

I have had a yellow kitchen at our past two homes and "home" just is not the same with out one. The kitchen is the center of my daily life and I need it to be happy and bright. I am sure it stems from visiting my Great-Grandmother as a child. Her little kitchen beamed like a bright marigold in the morning. (and I mean bright.) The walls were yellow and the cabinets were a golden yellow with an "orangier" color on the doors. Even the chairs had yellow vinyl and the step stool was yellow. This woman loved to care for people and worked her self silly doing it. (Hmmmm, reminds me of someone) It was in this kitchen that I had my first lessons about plants and learned to love the delicacies of "poor folk food." (She would butter saltine crackers and warm them up- shockingly yummy.) I never wanted to leave that kitchen. Although I may never achieve the "glow"of her kitchen, I hope I can fill mine with as much love as she did.

Have I mentioned we have EGGS now??? I am quite excited that we finally have something to show for our efforts. I am also enjoying my egg sandwiches and veggies from the garden. Good stuff.
cmayI think yellow is a happy color! What wonderful memories of your Grandma.
cmayYum eggs!
heatheronthehillCongratulations on the eggs! That's very exciting!

I've always had a yellow kitchen too - butter yellow. I love the cheery color!
bekkaYellow is a happy color. Such great memories..... I'm sure you will make some wonderful memories in your kitchen.
whipsmileI would one day love to have a farm life as y'all do.

But for now, I am content where I am. Somethign to work towards.
cruisingmomI love you too!!! Go for the gold, I mean yellow. You deserve to have a happy kitchen. I know your great-grandma would be proud. Your kitchen is the heart of your home and you use it well. My grandgirls are in loving, nurturing hands. (Ben too) OK, I can not type and cry at the same time...I need to scoot out the door. Love you!
tommyswifeI get very nostalgic about Corelle dishes with green flower accents because of my grandma B. and also yellow mixing bowls remind me of my Grandma Conover. I am so excited about your eggs. I notice such a big difference in taste and color of farm fresh eggs! As for JT, please do not get him anything! He obviously does not need it! If you insist on something, anything educational that would help with school this year. But it is not at all necessary!!!! Can't wait to see the yellow kitchen!
kmedasmomI'm with you on the yellow kitchen!! My kitchen is yellow and I love it. We are moving to Ky and the new kitchen has a garish wallpaper. Though it will not be the first on the to do list, I will be changing it fairly quickly. It's like you say, it is where we spend so much of our day, it's nice to have it bright and welcoming!! Happy Yellow kitchen and happy yellow egg yokes!!! [x]
all_gods_childrenYellow is a great kitchen color! My kitchen is yellow, so I'm not biased or anything! ;o) Great memories! Enjoy your eggs and veggies!
amcmichaelhow awesome a yellow kitchen!! THat is so exciting. We are eagerly awaiting our eggs! Hope you have a great week!
smiley_bethYeah for fruits of your labor! And I love the color yellow.
tommyswifeThanks for calling tonight! We will miss you, but I hope you two have a very romantic weekend! ;)
ashleybwe ate at the new gluten free bakery...pizza!!!!! i thought i had died and gone to heaven..but they were out of most eveything! that is a great sign..although i wish i could have sampled more sweet stuff:) yellow is my favorite color...my house is yellow an it makes me smile everytime i pull into the driveway!!

Hope 07-11-08 10:55pm EST
"Organization is making your life work for you by bringing the dailiness of life under control through yielding to the Holy Spirit concerning the wise use of your time."

Thoughts?

Organization seems to be such a buzz topic now days. Yes, I think it is important, but I wonder sometimes if we look at the world instead of the Word for guidance about it. God obviously appreciates order, but I am left wondering if maybe instead of buying more storage "solutions" and hording stuff, we just need less, or maybe we do not need to try to appear to look as if we live in a museum when we have little ones running around and have spiritual matters that need attention.

I hear so much talk about this and I hear so many women using mess/lack of organization as a reason for not entertaining etc... We need to watch our focus. We also need to truly realize that none of the stuff is ours anyways.
smiley_bethAmen! I recall our recent conversation about simplifying to three outfits each :) I am in constant battle with hording. It's in my genes.
smiley_bethHe's not doing to bad, except that he keeps overdoing it. He needs to learn his limitations. Prostate CA from what I hear is one of the easiest to treat, I will just be more comfortable when we fully know what he is facing. Unfortunately that will not be until the 21st when test results are back.
smiley_bethSo how did the lemonade stand go?
cmayI read somewhere about a person who's Great Aunt (or maybe just Aunt can't remember now)who died they could fit all her worldly possessions in the trunk of their car. She said she realized it was because her Aunt placed more value on the people around her than on material things. That has always stuck with me and makes me see how I am lacking in caring more for the people around me than the stuff that's around me.
cruisingmomLess stuff is the goal. We are able to live with just a bit of stuff on vacation, just a suitcase worth. It really does not take much stuff to be happy. I understand this intellectually, so why is there only a path in my basement?
Congrats on the yard sale total. WooHoo for success. How did the lemonade stand fare?

whipsmilei love the minimilist look. I hate clutter in my space.

i still would like to own less...need to work on that more.
all_gods_childrenI often think that too. I keep thinking that I don't need all this stuff. Seriously, I need to downsize. I am slowly whittling down, but it's taking me a while.

Good thoughts.
lesleyWith the move we just had we got rid of so much stuff, as you know :) I like not having as much stuff to worry about, clean, and take care of! As for the "excuse" of the house being to messy to entertain... it's mind over matter thing. Some may need to lower their standards. ?? I know I have relaxed a lot about this. I used to not be able to leave things undone to sit down and play with the kids. I want to enjoy my family and do things for others and not have the dirty dishes & laundry on my mind all of the time- those things are always there.
kellykeesh, i know that's not how to spell it correctly, but you know what i mean. when you have a min if you could send me the recipe that would be good. thanks. love ya!

In 2008... 07-10-08 01:28am EST
What is the going rate for lemonade at a kid's lemonade stand?

We are having a yard sale tomorrow and the girls are taking on their first entrepreneurial task. Willow is quite excited and they quickly worked out that Rosemary would take the money and Willow would pour. So, now what to charge? I said .25 and Ben looked at me like I was from the moon and said that was what Dennis the Menace charged. Hmmm, if we do .50, they may make more money than me :)

________________________________________________

Update: The girls kept up or passed me in sales, until I sold the digital camera! They burned out early though, because it is rather dead. I think I need to borrow someone's neighborhood garage.
waerickIs it fresh squeezed or stir and pour? Tap water or "special" water? What size cup? As cute as your girls are, just ask for donations, the money will roll in!
waerickBTW, what are you doing awake at 1:28am? You've got a yard sale tomorrow! :)
curlieI would totally buy a cup of lemonade from them for 50 cents! :)
ektustin50 cents is fine, but I like the donations idea, too.
71lespaulcustomThe donations idea is wonderful. The girls can experience service to those who do not wish to donate, and experience generosity through those that do!
smiley_bethI loved lemondae stands. Hope they have fun and are "successful". Miss you guys. We want pics of the lemonade stand.
cruisingmomI'll be there soon and you know I am willing to pay way more than 50ยข!
kellyit all depends where you are geographically. you know here in greenwich i've seen 75c - $2.00 (couldn't believe the $2... only in greenwich! donations is a great idea.
lesleyCan't wait to hear how it goes!
carabooin my limited lemonade stand experience, i've found that most people will just give the kids a dollar and let them keep the change. especially if it's a red party cup, not a tiny dixie cup.
cruisingmomHope today is more profitable than yesterday. Soon as I get Lorie settled I will get to work on my sale. I have room for what you want to send my way.
whipsmileI was going to say that $.50 was a nice price, but instead I spent a good minute looking for the cent key on my keyboard.

I still haven't found it. :-)
