Caleb and the boys didn't play ball the last 2 years. We just weren't able to do it because the only leagues near us were either traveling or just way too expensive. So, now that we're in Jonesborough and all the games and pracices are at the same place, it was a good time. We also thought it would be a good way to meet some people in the area and potentially have some prospects.
The first practice for Daniel and Nathan went really well with the coach's wife telling me basically her life story and us agreeing to all get together and have dinner some time. She hasn't been at any of the other practices that I have been to since then. Sometimes I am at Caleb's and she is with their older boy. But regardless, I feel it is still pretty encouraging.
On Caleb's team, I have gotten to meet some of the moms, but so far no open door - I am still praying. Well, today it came out of nowhere. I hardly knew what to say. I had to drop off Caleb at pracice because I had to bring Daniel somewhere else. I asked the coach if I was back by 7:00, would that be okay. He said that they would still be working until around 7:30 so that would be fine. I had paid his wife for Caleb's pants last practice and she didn't have change. He remembered that he had the change so he went back to the truck to get it. I guess seeing the name triggered his memory because he said. Hey, didn't your husband meet my dad? I said, I'm not sure but maybe so because we have met several people lately. He then said, over at the church of Christ. They were having a revival. I then remembered the only church in the area having a meeting last week and asked if he meant Erwin? He said yes! Apparently his parents and his brother both attend there! I don't know if knowing that I had to leave was what made him ask, but I was very encouraged. I will have to ask David if he remembers them.
I am so thankful that God is gently nudging and showing the doors opening.
Hey Tonya, looks like you are due for another post. Hope that Daniel had a fun Birthday. He sounded really excited about the party. Pirates Party with a Pinata. Hope yall had a good time!
Did mother ever get to call you. She had been trying to reach you so she could wish Daniel happy Birthday. She liked the PIC, but was like, "what is that on the side on Daniel's head" and I said "that is his ear, see Nathan has one too"
I can't believe it has been nearly a month since I updated. I would love to put up new pictures of the chicks, but I can't find the camera anywhere. They are kinda cute. They have been really easy and the boys have gotten used to changing out their food and water and putting in fresh newspaper.
The weather here has been wonderful. All the trees are in bloom, but a little shower comes about every other day so the pollen is not bothering me like normal.
My sister and her family were here 3 weeks back and we had a great time together. It was great seeing them all.
This Thursday, David's parents are coming up and I know we will have a good time seeing them again.
Baseball has started here and the kids are on different teams but are all "Red Socks". There first games are this Saturday. Nathan and Daniel are both on the same team (T ball) and it is really cute to watch them play.
Lots going on here so it may be another month until I update again (ha ha). Hope you are all doing well.
I couldn't believe it! Yesterday at 2:30 I got a call from Johnson City post office that the baby chicks had arrived! Well, then all mayhem ensued.
I couldn't find any car keys. David had brought two sets with him to work because he was going to get copies made, and I was searching everywhere for the spare set. Once found, I headed out the door and realized that Johnson City post office, was not the one I normally go to. We actually live in Jonesborough and that it my regular post office. So, I called one of the men from the church and he came by and told me that there were actually 3 Johnson City post offices. So, the first one I went to was not it, but a really nice man called around and found out where I needed to go.
I still am learning my way around here, and the post office was in a section of town that I had never been to. I went around the back and went into this huge warehouse and heard, "peep, peep, peep" and was thinking,"How can 10 little chicks be so loud?" Well, when I got to where they were I found that I wasn't the only one who had ordered chicks. There were 4 boxes of 50 chicks with one little box in the middle.
I said, "The little one is mine." The guy checked my ID and gave me the little box. He told me that he had raised them all his life and they were a lot of fun.
Well, the hatchery threw in an extra in case one died, plus our free rare breed, so in all there are 12 new chicks. They are super cute and are doing great. But, I made a mistake in the ordering and accidently ordered straight run instead of all pullets. So, we have five cockerels (future roosters). We will see how it turns out.
The extra chick is really pretty. He is a bantam I think because he is brown and has little down feathers all the way to his feet. Nathan has named him, Fancy, so if he turns out to be a she then we are still okay for names.
Oh, and Terri and Michael and the girls are coming Thursday! I am so excited!
I know, and what is so funny is the PO that I picked them up from is about the size of Birmingham's. What is really funny is when you are standing in the Home Depot or Michael's parking lot, across this major highway is
Aw, I loved getting baby chicks in the mail! We haven't done that in a few years. I'm waiting for my kids to get old enough so I can get them an Easter bunny to raise :)
How exciting. I've never raised them, but I understand they are lots of fun. I am reminded of the Lucy Show where she had baby chicks running all over her house. It was funny.
Our first try with this so we are getting 10 little cuties! Today we have been trying to set up a makeshift brooder for our small "flock". I was amazed at the heat the brooder bulbs put out, you could easily have roasted chicken if it were too close.
I will put up pictures as soon as they arrive. Hopefully we can keep them alive.
We have 2 pups coming in about 6 weeks (they are a week old today!) They are half collie and half australian shepherd. We have had an aussie mix before and they are super gentle, so I hope we don't have any problems with them having a taste for chicken.
KEWL! Are you raising them to eat or are they layers?
I have had my fill of raising chicken to eat. Did that with my SIL and well let's just say after the slaughter (we did ourselves) I didn't want to see another chicken for MANY MANY YEARS!
What an experience! My sister raises chickens for the eggs. And for supper if they don't behave. :) We've benefited several times from the eggs...nothing like a store bought egg!
We had chickens when I was growing up, I miss taking care of them. I was also the one who had to help my mother pluck when she killed the older hens. If you dogs ever get in your chickens (good possiblity they will) tie a dead one around their necks for a couple days and that should break them from it. We also had to do that a few times.
This is very weird to me. This week, we have seen three broken electric poles.
The first was Monday. It was a beautiful day and up ahead, we could see that the grass was on fire. When we got up to the smoke, we saw that a truck had hit the large wooden electric pole and had kept going. The driver was out, but there were lines on the ground. We passed the emergency vehicles about 20 seconds later. What was so strange is that the lower half was gone, but the upper half was still attached to the lines.
Then, the next day we were going to one of the member's house not to far from us. Well, the school has just gotten out, and someone had hit another power pole. This one was just dangling in the air with the lines actually supporting the bottom part of the pole. The car that had hit it was gone so I hope that means the driver was okay. The power company and fire department were there trying to get a new pole in place. At this point it was starting to rain.
Then, later in the day it was raining torrents. I wish we wouldn't have had to be out in it, but we had to get paperwork notorized and next day mailed back to the title company. I was quite surprised to see the flashing lights of the emergency vehicles and learn that, yes once again, a power pole had been hit and was dangling in the air by the lines.
If this keeps up, I am confident that our power bills will be astronomical. j/k
It wasn't his "first" but close to it. We had a children's class on Sunday evenings and he always wanted to "lead" the singing. People were amazed that he could carry a tune at such a young age, but both of my boys have a good ear when it comes to music.
Things go in 3s so maybe you've seen the last one! The presence of all the young mothers last Saturday was encouraging. It was a pleasure to be able to pass on things older women had passed on to me when my children were little.
