In honor of my mother's birthday (which was 54 minutes ago - obviously I'm up too late!), this blog is dedicated to the woman who dedicated her life to her children. My mom did (and does) a lot of things that are really special in today's world.
She gave up a career because we were more valuable to her than any money she could have brought home.
She breastfed us because she believed it was the best thing she could do for the physical health of her babies.
She put a needle and thread in my hands when I was three years old and gave me the skills I'm using today.
She read to us - even books that most people would have said were over our heads - and taught me that history is a series of stories... with names and dates!
She dedicated fourteen years and thousands of tears to our education.
She let us run free on 28 acres and then taught us to be ladies.
She picked the best man I know to be the father of her children.
I have very little faith in any politician - in order to survive in the field, some level of corruption and/or willingness to compromise your values is almost requisite - but Sarah Palin seems to be the 1 in 1,000,000 that has standards and a willingness to stand up and fight for what she believes is right.
So far, I think the biggest political mistake she's made is hooking up with McCain. His reputation and actions (and the situations this will put her in) is almost certainly going to tarnish her by association, if nothing else. Politically, of course, it's a good move for her. But in real life... It would take an incredibly strong, wise woman for it to be otherwise - but she just may be able to do it.
As far as McCain goes, his campaign (not him, I think) just played the best possible card they could have. Very astute. They picked her for her credentials and what she brings to the ticket - she couldn't have been better for the McCain ticket if she was made to order. I am really curious how many people on the McCain team actually like her. Not many, I'm guessing.
Well, this just transformed me from being very apathetic and pessimistic about the election to interested, if nothing else.
I am way more interested now than I was earlier, that's for sure. I'm still doing a write-in, I think (should I do John Adams or Mickey Mouse?), but I think this move on McCain's part was one of the savviest political decisions in the last half-century. Obama picked a cranky and boring old white guy. McCain picked a young, different woman. Should be fun to watch. :)
I am very excited for the first time about this election! I was so afraid McCain would pick someone who wasn't conservative! Very relieved that Palin is so conservative.
Quote from your article doesn't make me think of the virtuous woman in PR 31, or her husband, who was "known in the gates: "ANCHORAGE, Alaska - He's known as a doting, blue-collar husband who stands on the sidelines as his wife blazes a historic trail in politics. …. At home, Todd Palin has juggled the cooking and taking care of the bills with driving the kids to extracurricular activities like basketball and soccer.”
The fact that she's leaving a 4 month old to "blaze" her trail is extremely not impressive to me. Her political views are, but since she is leaving her children to be raised by her husband and nannies (including her 4 mo. old with Downs Syndrome) and she is a woman hoping to have a huge leadership role over millions of men, I am not a fan.
I have to agree with emmylou--I am concerned about her values since she does not seem to make her family a priority--even Hillary was not in the White House until Chelsea was almost grown.
Hi, Meghan! Did I tell you I had mail in my mailbox (the one by the street)?? Thank you so much! I loved seeing it, opeing it, and reading it. The pictures were beautiful, and Mamaw Sherry and I have already divided them. I love you --and so wish I could bring Jesse to your museum. (How far is the drive from here?)
Just in case all you Indy people are interested, I bought plane tickets to IND last night!
I'm flying back for a friend's wedding and I'll be there Oct. 1-4. Yippee!! You have no idea how excited I am about this! I miss everyone at Avon like crazy and can't wait to be back!
Also, I got to visit Jenn, Justin, and little Samuel this past weekend, and he is growing like a weed! A very cute weed.
I wonder if I joined facebook, if I would get on and read that more? What do you think? I miss you, berries are busy, I picked a bucket of raspberries yesterday and wanted to send you and her some. So many people are asking about you - I have your picture as Mrs. T up under all the photos of you 3. Mr. BullFrog is reading your theses (Mrs. BF is reading it to him actually) send him an email if you have opportunity.
