I'm sorry that I was not able to update this sooner, but there were complications during the IES. My membrane was much worse than the doctor had thought; and instead of one hour of surgery, it took three hours. Also, during the surgery, my retina was accidentally torn so the doctor had to put a gas bubble in my eye to hold my retina in place so that it would not detach (permanent blindness issue there). My duty for the last 12 days has been to stare at my feet in order to keep the bubble pushing on the proper part of my retina. That has posed some interesting problems, especially trying to sleep, but... TODAY I AM ALLOWED TO LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD AGAIN!!!!! I had to have an extra surgery to burn some abnormal blood vessels off my retina today; but, it was short and TODAY I AM ALLOWED TO LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD AGAIN!!!!! Praise the Lord! My vision is still worse than before the surgery, but there is still hope for improvement. At the very least, all this surgery has saved my eye from permanent blindness and I am very thankful for that.
The Lord has blessed me beyond belief. I asked for courage, patience, and thankfulness no matter the outcome and He gave me all of that in overflowing amounts. My church family, as well as my physical family, have helped me with food and trips to the doctor and prayers and cards. I am exceedingly blessed! Thank you, all of you in Pleo land, for your prayers, too. They were heard and answered.
Aedan is better, although I did have to pick him up early from school yesterday. He is acting normal (is there such a thing for a 10 yr. old boy), his tummy is just not normal. Thanks for the feedback about Doug's lesson. He was nervous, but I knew he would do well. I have high hopes for being at the next group meeting. I had been looking forward to this one for 2 months!
Thanks! Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, so I was super excited that we were able to go this year. The website said it was the best color they've had in years.
I know isn't it the best pizza ever!!! I miss the people and would love to go back again...and I am sure we will have to one day, but it was nice while it lasted. How are you feeling?? Are your eyes better? Love you.
All of us are suffering from allergies, especially today, but Katie had a rash on top of all her allergies, so we took her to the doc today. Luckily it's nothing too bad. :)
I saw your comment to Tiff's page. You can purchase tickets through Frank Erwin Center. They have a link to that particular show. I think they perform twice that day: 3pm & 7:30pm. They have a 4 pack of tickets for the $25 range per ticket, but those seats are going to be way up in the mezzanine. :) Hope all that helped. :)
Y'all would LOVE it!! Like Dianna said, you can go to the Frank Erwin website & find the Transiberian Orchestra on there. Also, you can just google "Transiberian Orchestra tickets Austin TX" and it will bring up different sights that are selling them. There is one called greatseats.com (or something like that) and they have the REALLY good seats available, but they are a lot more expensive that way. If you buy them through the Frank Erwin website, they are the least expensive that way.
Actually, it's three dogs to two people. When our son and his wife went to adopt a lab puppy for each of them, there were only three left in the litter. They didn't have the heart to leave one behind. They have about two acres to roam behind an invisible fence, and they keep each other company. The puppies do have a lot of energy, but they're coming along in their training.
Hope you guys had a happy thanksgiving! I'm soooo glad my dad was there to help me, too! It stinks that my truck broke down, but I was so fortunate as far as the timing goes! :D
Next Thursday, October 16, I will be having surgery for an epiretinal membrane that is growing in my right eye. It is not a fun surgery and I will be under general anesthesia for the procedure. Some doctors do it under a local, but I would rather be knocked out. The surgery is called a "vitrectomy with membrane peel" and I won't go into any gory details, but I will leave you with a link to a website where you can read about it if you dare! Please pray for me that it goes well and I at least don't lose any more vision in that eye. The surgery is a little risky and they don't like to do it until it is a last resort, and I have finally reached that point.
Here is the link about epiretinal membranes if you want to know more details. You can link from there to "vitrectomy" to read about the surgery.
I will pray for you! I hope you heal up well. I would want to be knocked out too. :) I also wanted to say something about my comment on your modesty article. I did want to say that I think my dress could have used some improvements and that I don't think it was "perfectly" modest. I just thought I may have left that impression and thought I would clarify. Love ya! :)
Hope the surgery goes well and that you are able to preserve your eyesight. I'd want to be knocked out, too -- I can't STAND anyone messing with my eyes!
Yes, I do go to the dentist in SA. My father-in-law was my dentist until a couple of years ago when he retired. Phil and I tried a dentist here in town who wanted to fix about 32 teeth between us, and he acted like we had never been to the dentist. I just decided to go back to the dentist I went to before I was married. I feel like he is someone I can trust not to take advantage of me. Plus, I have babysitters (my parents) in SA who do not mind helping me with the kiddos. Praying for you, and thanking about you this week!
I don't know the technical terms for it, but they were putting up the smoke pipe/stack thingy for my grandparent's wood burning stove, and lifting them up in the tractor bucket was just way more effective than two of them trying to climb a ladder. :)
I've been getting all the email updates on your surgery...I'm so sorry things didn't go as smoothly as hoped, but I pray you will have a quick recovery!
1. I have very tiny feet. Size 5-5 1/2. I was actually asked once how I could balance on them.
2. I didn't become a Christian until I was 23 years old.
3. I love to do my income taxes. I would probably do yours for you, too, for free, if I weren't so afraid of getting them wrong and having the government after you!
4. My all-time favorite book is Little Women. I have read it so much that when I see a movie version, I can usually tell if the actress got her line right or paraphrased.
5. I was a Cub Scout den mother and I won the Occoneechee Council Spark Plug Award!
6. I took flute lessons for 8 years and did all the band things.
7. I love to learn the etymology of words. Words are cool!
8. I love to teach Bible class. It really makes my day when once of my students from long ago actually remembers something I taught them.
So, now, whoever I tag needs to post 8 random facts about themselves and tag 8 more people!
I noticed you while I was talking to Sarah, but by the time we finished, you had been caught by someone else! Don't worry, I'll probably be home pretty often this semester, so I'll catch you next time, Lord willing! :)
I didn't know you played the flute. I really wished I played the flute during marching season! What is the spark plug award? I've heard good things about your bible classes where the kids learn all about Vines, Strongs, etc. Keep up the good work!
I'll answer you here since I can't seem to post on your page. My name is Lynn Harbin. My husband is Steve and we have one son, Daniel, who was going into the 8th grade when we moved away from St. Louis in 1995. Who are you?
From comments I have received, I understand that some people are very upset with the article I wrote on modesty. The article was definitely not written to point at certain individuals. It was meant in a general way, for each person who read it to do a self-examination and prayerfully consider their dress. As I said, I am sorry if this hurts some. Please forgive the hurt and just consider what I wrote as to what God considers modest. I am not requiring anyone to agree with me, just to consider what God wants in each life. Please do not allow my article to cause sin in any life by engaging in hateful thoughts, gossiping, backbiting, or slander. I wrote the article out of love for each soul it would reach, not out of spite or hatred. Thank you.

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. – I Timothy 2:9-10
Ladies, we all know that we should be modest. Modesty involves being adequately covered (without being skin-tight) and not drawing undo attention to ourselves – whether it is to attract boys or men, to have other women be jealous of our fashions, or have onlookers gawk at how much wealth we display by draping ourselves in gold and jewels.
I am sorry; but what I am about to say is going to hurt some people, even people that I care about very much. My decision to write this article is not to be mean-spirited for the sake of causing pain, but to bring about godly sorrow mete for repentance for some and provide some warnings for those who will be picking out clothes to wear soon. Here we go.
I have been to some weddings uniting Christians in marriage, and seen pictures of still other weddings online, that have shown me that we are succumbing to worldly influences in our dress at formal occasions. Let us consider the number of brides who are deciding to wear strapless and/or low cut gowns, halter tops, spaghetti straps, or see through lace for their wedding attire. Just because the gown is long, does that make it alright to wear what covers no more than a bathing suit on top? A wedding is the pledging of a covenant vow between a man and a woman before God and witnesses. Why would you consider exposing what should be for your husband’s eyes only at such a special occasion? Your bare back, shoulders, cleavage, and even the abdomen, are not meant to be seen by anyone other than your husband. Let me ask you this - if you decided to recycle your wedding gown by cutting it off just below the knee and dying it blue, would it be suitable attire for worship services or would you have to wear a sweater over it? Will you be able to show your daughter your wedding pictures some day and still tell her she can’t wear a top to school that looks very similar to your wedding dress bodice?
Brides are not the only ones at weddings succumbing to these influences. I have seen more cleavage and bare skin on bridesmaids and guests, too. Most of the bridesmaids’ dresses are much more revealing than what a bride ever thought about wearing. Ladies, if the bride asks you to wear a gown that is too revealing, ask if you can have a matching jacket or modesty panel made to provide more coverage. Brides, if you are letting the bridesmaids pick their own gowns, use some veto power if your best friend/cousin/sister picks out something too skimpy on top or too short on bottom. Just because you are young and pretty, that does not give you the right to show off all your “charms” to the world. Obviously, guests should use some discretion, too.
I have also heard from some friends that there is a similar problem at formal parties held in lieu of the prom, even at Christian colleges. These schools have dress codes, and yet the code seems to go out the window for formal occasions. The same thing happens to high school students who are trying to have their own substitute event for a dance. The goal of not going to a dance is admirable; let’s keep the dress admirable, too.
So, what do I do now, you say? I tell you these things because when I was young, I was not a Christian and I wore VERY short dresses. My high school yearbook is full of pictures of me that are a real embarrassment to me now. I can’t show them (or any pictures of me in a dress from that time period) to anyone because they might be a bad influence (“well, Miss Lynn wore that and she turned out okay” – ick) on someone. If you have already been married in a gown you now realize was inappropriate, put away your album for just you and your husband to share. If you were an inappropriately dressed bridesmaid, determine in your own mind that you will set higher standards for yourself at the next event. If you have been succumbing to wearing “cute and flirty” strapless/halter/spaghetti strap tops or dresses to weddings or around town, find a nice jacket or sweater to wear over it or stop wearing it. I tell you these things out of love.
as long as i dont over do it on the coffee it usually does not have the effect on me so much that im unable to sleep. I've always been an evening coffee drinker..in addition to the usual cup in the morning! Thanks again for your topic of discussion. I know I dont get to chat with you much but I do admire and appreciate you!
I don't think we've met, but we are just down the road!! Thank you for this article. Hopefully any that were offended by it will realize that you were lovingly pointing out what we should all be striving for ... to dress modestly ourselves and not be a stumbling block to others.
hey thanks for the comment. it's just hard being away from CP for so long and then coming back and people thinking i'm a visitor. it's kinda frustrating. lol. i just can't wait until i'm out of school and i can be at CP every sunday and wednesday... i'd like to see people try to forget about me then. lol, jk. i hope you have a wonderful week!!
well, atleast you can be happy knowing that AT&T mobility is the market share leader not only here in Austin, but in the U.S.! But, with the up and coming acquisition of Alltel I think it will make us bigger nationally :) Can't we all just get along??? :)
Well thank you, I hope I am being a good teacher! Sitations like that make it tough. I have had difficult students before, but usually the parents stand behind me and are at least trying to help. This parent was not only not supporting me, but blaming me!! So that was very discouraging. But it's okay. There are people out there like that, and I just learn more and more about people and the world everyday. At least I don't have to deal with that anymore and it is truly a great blessing. I appreciate your encouraging words!
His Mom was actually a chocolate point siamese, but to be honest, seal point and chocolate point can look so similar to me! Haha. We'll see how he looks as he grows. He has pretty long hair though. He's not a short hair siamese.
Hobbes is part siamese, even though he doesn't look it. He just has redish/organish points, and sometimes he almost looks all white in certain lighting. He is a lilac point mix type.
Anyway, Hobbes isn't quite as in love with Calvin as I am yet, but he's getting there. ;)
I've heard from him by email. I haven't asked about his hand. He's in Switzerland. He'll be back on Saturday afternoon. I guess no news is good news since he hasn't mentioned it either. :)
Thanks Lynn. I got the message to him. His hand looks pretty good to me today. I think it may leave a scar though. The rash is pretty bad now, but hopefully tomorrow that will ease some.
Thank you for writing this article. We need to get the message out! Have you seen or heard of my daughter's book on this topic? It is called The Modest Heart, written by Crystal L. Garza. You can read about it on her website: themodestheart.com and the book is available through amazon and other online book sellers. She devotes a chapter to weddings and formal events. Just thought I'd share!
hey! thanks for the good luck wishes! i really need them... it seems like everything just loaded up on me this week... a test on monday, major assignment due on monday, speech on tuesday, a few major assignments due next week and the week after... and the list just goes on and on... once the semester is over i am going to be the happiest person in the WORLD!!
As an elder in the Lord's church, I agree wholeheartedly with your concerns and thoughts about modesty. It shows something is amiss when folks don't mind "exposing" themselves, but get upset if you "expose" their behavior as being contrary to God's will. None of us can undo ungodly behavior of the past, however, we definitely can turn from past sins and ensure our behavior in the present and future is in harmony with God's word.
