Happy Thanksgiving! 11-26-08 10:21am CST
Then you shall keep the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God with the tribute of a freewill offering from your hand, which you shall give as the LORD your God blesses you. And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, the Levite who is within your towns, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow who are among you, at the place that the LORD your God will choose, to make his name dwell there. You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt; and you shall be careful to observe these statutes.

You shall keep the Feast of Booths seven days, when you have gathered in the produce from your threshing floor and your winepress. You shall rejoice in your feast, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow who are within your towns. For seven days you shall keep the feast to the LORD your God at the place that the LORD will choose, because the LORD your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful. -- Deut 16

The contemplation of God’s goodness in his creation will lead us to thankfulness and trust. …It is to recognize that God has destined all things for our good and salvation but at the same time to feel His power and grace in ourselves and in the great benefits He has conferred upon us, and so bestir ourselves to trust, invoke, praise, and love Him. -- John Calvin

Delight in Him from whom you have received everything that delights you. -- Thomas Aquinas

Mixed feelings... 11-26-08 02:40am CST
Today I had an "emergency" root canal. The first such procedure of my life. I don't recommend having one every week, but I have to say it wasn't as dreadful as I anticipated. My dentist called me at about 11-ish with a referral, I called the endodontist at about 11:50, and I was in his office by 12:50...not much time to be anxious. (Unless you count the last 11 months of my tooth aching, that is...)

Thank God for modern dentistry. Can you imagine having an inflamed tooth or an abscess with absolutely no recourse? Our ancestors really endured A LOT!

Even with a root canal, I think my day went better than my sister's... She, her husband, and her twins all had a wretched, violent stomach flu. And her husband was away on business, wanting to come home and help her, yet unable to leave his hotel room. No good!

Lastly I am reporting a personal victory. Something made me kind of mad last night, but I managed to zip my lip and say nothing. The person who aggravated me has no idea that I was afire... Discretion and self restraint paid off as, amazingly, it all worked out just fine this morning. Perhaps I should try that more often?

And now, for some more Advil!

These are some very happy dogs 11-24-08 09:21pm CST
But I hope no one else wanted to welcome this soldier with a kiss...

Fun was had by me 11-23-08 10:09pm CST
When I left my house in the dark on Friday morning, I really wasn't expecting too great a day. I had an appointment five hours from home, and I didn't feel especially well prepared or think I'd have much to add to the conversation. As usual, God had His own plan for my day. Work went especially well, which proves two things:
* I should be ashamed of myself for being crabby in anticipation of a mediocre day that didn't materialize.
* He provides for me, opens the door for my successes, and doesn't want me to forget it.

Afterward, I stopped at my favorite bakery and did a little work, then headed back. Along the way, I stopped to visit the deputy headmistress, with whom I am acquainted only through pleo, and her family...and, although I suspected I would like Wendi every bit as much in person as I do here, I had the pleasure of enjoying the whole gang. What a sweet and nice family, including the new SIL who brings a lot of laughter to the house! It was a real treat and (consider yourself warned, DHM) I plan to invite myself back from time to time! They know where to find me now, so they have been invited to avenge my visit -- in two's, please.

PS -- To anyone who feels sorry for Riley: Although he is outnumbered 6:1 (until Dad gets home from work anyway), I assure you that further pity is unmerited. His boy-ness is *not* diminished by a house-full of women.
