"Your purpose is not to be seen or known or loved or admired or praised. Your purpose is to see, know, love, admire, and praise God." ~ Guigo I (whoever that was!)
So you want to be in love like the movies
But in the movies they're not in love at all
And with a twinkle in their eyes
They're just saying their lines
So we can't be in love like the movies
Now in the movies they make it look so perfect
And in the background they're always playing the right song
And in the ending there's always a resolution
But real life is more than just two hours long
So you want to be in love like the movies
But in the movies they're not in love at all
And with a twinkle in their eyes
They're just saying their lines
So we can't be in love like the movies
Well you can freeze frame any moment from a movie
Or run the whole thing backwards from reel to reel
But I don't see one single solitary light technician
Or one single camera in this moonlit field
I don't want to be in love like the movies
Cause in the movies they're not in love at all
With a twinkle in their eyes
They're just saying their lines
So we can't be in love like the movies.
And with a twinkle in their eyes
They're just saying their lines
And so we can't be in love like the movies.
Nooooooo
We can't be in love like movies
i'm afraid i was very guilty of wishing life were like a movie as i was watching a clip from a jane austen movie this morning. man, i wish we could dance those dances like mr. maggot's waltz or whatever it's called.
Just semi-spontaneously bought a Gillian Welch album, along with some old-school sacred harp-style music in its full, twangy splendor. Ahh ... Southern music at its finest.
I'm beginning to think that in another life, I was some kind of barefoot, itinerant, fiddle-playin', overalls-wearin', biscuit-makin' peddler who just rambled through the Appalachians. Not that any of those things describe me now (although I HAVE eaten at Cracker Barrel three times in the last month-- that should count for something). I'm just saying it would have been pretty amazing to be like, Johnny Appleseed's lesser-known sister or something.
If anyone knows of a little cabin tucked away on a mountainside in need of an owner, and a little one-room schoolhouse in need of a teacher, let me know ...
Haha! I think you and I would have very different ideas of what Southern music is at its finest, but I'm glad you're enjoying yours. I'll keep my eyes peeled for that mountainside cabin, but I think it'd be in the desert, which you might not care for...
Have you ever read the book "Christy"? Its about a one-room school teacher in a backwoods Appalachian town. Its a feel good inspirational type book if you like that sort of thing.
Here
lies
a bag
Jack-o-lantern
orange, bright as
the October sun, yet
devastating, heart-wrenching,
in its bleak, crumpled emptiness.
Here
lies
a forlorn bag
once bursting with
but now devoid of
its stripety inhabitants,
the harbingers of autumn and of
surprisingly premature tooth decay.
Here
lie
I
once devoid of
but now bursting with
said harbingers in all their
high-fructose-corn-syrup splendor,
my stomach protesting a sudden onset of
original, chocolate, and pumpkin symptoms.
Here
lie
we
one empty
one full, sharing
the bittersweet memory
of fall’s sweetest tradition
awaiting its resurrection months hence
(provided, of course, it doesn’t kill me now).
For the record, I DID arrange that poem in clever, symmetrical, candy-corn shaped stanzas. However, I'm not nearly as clever when it comes to formatting entries on Pleonast, so you'll have to use your imagination.
Meghan (my older sister) normally finished her halloween candy within a week of receiving it; I , on the other hand, would only eat a piece a day in order to stretch it out. Then Meghan would come to me and beg me to share. And I always felt so bad and guilty that I had some and she didn't that I would give her mine. Gullible child.
This just in ... I'm quite stoked about attending an Avett Brothers concert in Tampa on Thursday, but unfortunately, the friend who had planned to be there as well miiiiiight not be able to make it. Almost as unfortunately, I'm a big giant sissy, and I don't really want to go to a concert by myself! So, if you're in the area, and you don't mind spending 19 bucks to watch a FANTASTIC band perform ... let me know!

False alarm! Thanks to the astute observations of a certain goonie of my acquaintance, I realized that the show has, in fact, been postponed until May. Which solves my problem for the present. Now I just have the new problem of not getting a face-melting musical experience when I wanted to. Oh, well.
Hi Allison! I had a letter yesterday from Shirley Caple and she mentioned you. Said she hasn't seen you since she had to go to KY to see about her parents. I haven't met her, but she has been a big supporter of me during my cancer trials. She seems really nice.
Ralph WALDO Emerson, that is!
I'll wait a moment for the hearty chuckling and knee-slapping to subside ...
Wow, that was quick.
Actually, all silliness aside, I wanted to share a little snidbit from his "American Scholar":
"This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it."
I find those words particularly inspiring and comforting, and I hope you do, too! If you've recently taken advantage of the opportunity to use your time in a very good way, feel free to share down below!
Man... took me a good 10 minutes (really, more like 0.10 seconds) for MY laughter to subside...
I like that quote. Reminds me of Eph 5.15-16: "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil."
Hi, Allison. I am a friend of your mom's from FC days. Your mom emailed me that you were looking at Vanderbilt as a place to conduct your graduate studies. I noticed you have Matt Harber and Katie Byers on your Pleo friends' list. I saw those two grow up, as they both attended the congregation called Broadmoor in the Nashville area. They might both be good sources to clue you in to information about the Nashville area. I hope I get to meet you if and when you move to this area. I looked over some of your blog entries and you seem like quite an intelligent and witty young lady. But then, I can see where you got at least some of that intelligence, since I know your mom. I see you have Julianne Metzger on your friend's list. She's a sweetie! Let me know if I can research anything for you since I live close to the Nashville area. I do worship in Nashville on Sunday mornings, though I worship in Portland, TN on Wed. and Sun. nights, since we live about a 40 minute drive from Nashville. My name,BTW, is Jenny Hartsell Webb. Your Uncle Joe is married to one of my cousins. Take care.
Well, I'm not sure what "The Little Prince" is (I'm guessing a childrens book), but I'm reading the art of war and other "classics" because I feel like I'm lacking in that department. I plan on enjoying my break, thanks! I might run into you if you're around Tampa since that is where I will be.
