It’s easier to become President of the U.S. than it is to become an overseer in the Lord’s church!
1. This is an office worthy of honor
2. This is an office that men should aspire to
3. This is an office that children should be taught to respect and aspire to
4. This is an office that is to be an example to all
5. This is an office that is designed for God’s glory
May Christians give as much attention (if not more) to seeking/becoming qualified elders as they do Presidents!
If we qualified men to presidents the way God qualifies men to be elders, then not a single one of these admirable men would serve in the government. They would be to busy fulfilling their duty to God's people. At least, that's my view on it. Don't get me wrong: I want moral men to be in the White House. I just don't think it is likely.
Not true Mr. Todd. Don't you think keeping the government a work of God against evil men IS a duty to God's people? I believe a man would find the balance to hold both positions.
We give up too quickly on our government and hide in the confines of local churches. Perhaps that is a problem that will ultimately increase difficulties and destruction toward local churches. Just a thought.
You got me, Kris. I was going to clarify my position somewhat, but I don't disagree with you. I think the cynic in me was sounding off in my earlier comment.
I actually have not been to India yet. But I speak to them via e-mail etc... and Chandrakanth stayed with me here in the states for an extended period of time.
This year I was supposed to go, but my father died, causing me to cancel the trip. I have sent out a half dozen or so other evangelists to help with the work there, over the past few years.
I've been supporting them for about 3 years now. The work they do is amazing! These people faithfully built churches for 20 years with no help, no support, no buildings, and having only one Bible per congregation.
They are in the most heavily persecuted area of India.
In the past two years we have been able to build 6 church buildings for them, and provide Bibles, and songbooks for every Christian. We also bought clothes for every orphan and widow.
In the last year they have had 94 baptisms there.
They are truly wonderful people.
Go into "Settings" then "Options," and make sure you're on the "Features" tab. There is a section for "AutoFill" - make sure that box is unchecked. Click either "OK" or "Apply" and you should be good to go.
I'm going to crosspost this in the Pleonast Guide group in case someone else has that problem. :)
Today my wife took her oath and became a U.S. Citizen. It is perhaps, the second most important citizenship she can possess after that of the kingdom.
I am honored to have her as my wife, as we as a country, are honored to have her as a citizen. She is an unspeakable blessing, an indescribable grace, an undeserving gift in my life.
Congratulations! I bet her heart skipped at becoming a citizen, and also at the very sweet warm way you described her. It sounds like you BOTH are very blessed.
:) I am so happy for you both! You have to watch this video and make sure Adriana is watching it with you, it will crack ya'll up :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zw8VTlxk9E
First of all, happy birthday. :) Second of all, thanks for your comments. Sometimes, you just need to hear the things you already know from someone to remind you that they're true. You are a huge encouragement to me!
While that's true, I still like her from the same standpoint that she's more like the average American than most politicians and is adamantly opposed to financial waste. We need someone like that in Washington who wants to clean things up. I think it could be interesting. So how old are you now?
I have been a parent for 4 ½ years and counting. Our family rejoices in that we have child number 2 on the way, and Lord willing will arrive mid April of 2009. Being a parent is an absolutely amazing, exciting, fun, laborious, and/or challenging experience. At 15 years of age I figured I had the whole parenting thing figured out. I thought I knew all the right and wrong things my parents did, and exactly what I would do when I was a parent to get it all right! Now at 30, with 4 ½ years under my belt, I have to be honest and say I’ve asked the question a few times, “Why didn’t this kid come with an instruction manual?”
Now before I get into the main point, I must establish that my kid is wonderful. He is an absolute joy, and I treasure him in my heart. I know that any fault he may possess is a result of my own shortcomings as a father providing instruction, and not because of his lack of enthusiasm, love, energy, or willingness to learn. A hearty Amen to Psalms 127:3; a child is a gift / blessing!
I know most parents have faced the struggles I have faced, possessed the doubts that I have possessed, and asked the questions that I have asked. I know that I am not alone, and that my faults as a parent are not unique; which is why I feel the topic is so important. As parents have cried out in the recesses of their mind, “Why didn’t this kid come with an instruction manual?”; what is the answer? Three points and the lesson is yours.
First, what good would it have done? In our society, men in particular have the reputation for shunning instructions. We can all think back to the birthdays and Christmases where Dads tried to put the toys together first, and then when all else failed… got Mom to read the instructions to him. We are “Do first, look at instructions later” kind of people. How many times have we done something, looked at the instructions after and said, “Oooooooh. Yeah, that would have worked a lot easier.” Friends, family, neighbors, and brethren; our children are too precious and too valuable for us to waste time not reading, studying, and applying God’s instruction manual. It is a selfish, prideful, arrogant soul that has the treasure of instruction sitting before them in God’s word, and yet shuns it to do it “My Way”. Let me tell you something, unless your way is God’s way then it is a wrong way and you will pay… BIG TIME!
Second, they did come with a manual. The instruction manual for children provided by God to man IS the book of Proverbs. Oh how I wish the title of that book was “God’s Instruction Manual for Raising Godly Children”. Perhaps (although for some reason I still have my doubts) more people would spend their time studying it. But consider the text. In the first nine chapters the phrase “My son (children)” occurs 18 times, often at the chapter divisions, and is spoken from the perspective of a father teaching and training his children. While chapters 10-29 are various collections of proverbs, the principles about good/evil, righteousness/wickedness, wise/foolish, rich/poor, lazy/diligent, etc. cover EVERY aspect of teaching and training godly children that a parent will need. Respect, honor, love, self control, faithfulness, godliness, joy, contentment… IT’S ALL THERE! It is a priceless treasure trove for parents.
Third, it is never too late to study, learn, and apply the teaching of Proverbs. The word needs to get out of what a valuable resource Proverbs is to parents of any and all ages. One of the greatest gifts you can give your child(ren) is proper discipline, instruction, and training. Your children cannot afford for you to be lazy and/or arrogant in reading, studying, and applying the instructions that God has provided. There is no parent, who genuinely studies and applies the text of Proverbs in their teaching and training that will be sorry they did so, but there will be countless who are, or will be, sorry they did not.
Fear the Lord; that is the beginning of knowledge. (Pro 1:7) Fear that you will stand before God in judgment for your training of your children. Fear that your children will stand before God in judgment. Perhaps, if you love your children, that picture in your mind of your children standing before God in judgment will be enough motivation to stop “winging it” and open up that instruction manual God provided and start reading!
I too, thought I had it all figured out, I thank God I had Susan to reel me in, I really had no clue. I agree, they don't come with an instruction book but GOD has provided that book. Thanks for your good words.
For those who have difficulties understanding certain Proverbs, know this: Super Dave knows Proverbs! He's marked, connected lines, and defined phrases in every margin throughout the whole book. Write this down somewhere: "Proverb Problems: Blog Dave."
We are drawn to greatness. Excellence is a spotlight in the midst of normalcy. I won't play golf, much less watch it; but I'll watch Tiger Woods play. I'll swim occasionally, but I don't watch swimming, but I'll watch Michael Phelps. He's absolutely amazed me this last week. The saddest part about it all for me, is that I remember when I was younger than all the athletes at the Olympics.
Michal Phelps reminds me a lot of my best bud, Kris Emerson. Seems like every time he preaches it's a gold medal sermon in the life of the hearers. Great organization, analysis, communication, charisma. Just outstanding! An inspiration.
Excellence is uplifting and encouraging. It rallies the spirit and lights the fire within the soul. Excellence, is something we should all be striving for.
Above all, excellence is exhibited in our God. How marvelous are His ways! I am drawn to the cross as I think of the excellence Christ displays in honoring the Father and loving mankind. I am inspired by the wisdom of God as we study through the book of Proverbs. God's excellence leave me in awe.
God Bless you all. And may I challenge you to excellence in your life this week.
Thanks Bud. Pretty sure the usage of me as an example is the only thing that kept your post from being "excellence," but I certainly appreciate you. You are, uh, like, my bff dude.
Greetings. Denny from Bacliff. I remember Kris preaching a few years ago at a meeting in Texas City. Did an excellent job. Hopefully, one day we'll see him, and him us, be awarded the victor's crown for excellence in God's service.
I know, it's really not fair to compare Michael Phelps to guys like you and Kris. You perform spiritually at that level and do it for more than 2 weeks. Phelps get's paid a little :) more, and while I'm amazed and inspired by his accomplishments, I am more so by the work of guys like you and Kris. God Bless you Brother!
ok, so NOW i have to put Atlanta on my list of places to go -- even though i've been there, i never knew there was a tour of my favorite eating establishment!! WOW, how cool is that? thanks for the info!
Oh and yes he got your message, right as he got to the phone it stopped ringing and he didn't know it was you till he heard the message. So when are ya'll gonna come over and see us and play on the wii?!
Saw your post on Kris' blog, if you are really wanting to get your wife some of the gluten free stuff, you can order it from Disney. If you want the phone number let me know.
Thanks for the Happy birthday! :) Yeah, I know I won't always want to do that. :) Thankfully, Jeremy usually does the cleaning when I cook. He was just having to make a lot of phone calls last night. Otherwise, he probably would have been doing most of the cleaning. :-D Happy Wednesday!
Bro, Wendi is Disneyworld. The two are one. If it happens there, can happen from there, or is in the future imagination of developers to happen in connection with here or there: she can hook you up. But certainly I will still load up on cookies if you haven't gotten them by then.
I just googled "unforgiveness" and it is listed over 200,000 times, so we must be right. Actually, I copied that thing I posted from an email, so I can't say that IIIIIIIII actually used the word.
Hey David! Good to hear from you. I hope things are well with you. I apologize for taking some time to return your comment, I've been in the Philippines for three weeks and just returned home. But anyhow, how's the work going down in Texas City? Well, I trust. But I agree I do not think the passages in Mark and Matthew, of the disciples singing have direct bearing on the church's practice, only that they serve as an example of what Jesus did on earth.
Apparently I need to watch this video. I posted some thoughts on Amy's question, but I need to study it further. I'd be interested in swapping notes with you.
That's so cute! :) he doesn't look so sure! But congratulations!!!! That's fantastic! It was great to see y'all at the wedding. Thank you so much for coming!
