My neighbor next door who lives across the street has had a beautiful Victorian cast iron mailbox for about 10 years. About 6 years ago, someone broke the door on the mailbox, making it impossible to close. I can see their mailbox from my kitchen window so I look to see if they have gotten their mail yet, then I know to walk to our mailbox. Friday, one of the foreign exchange students that lives with them had the nerve to FIX the door on the mailbox so I can't see if the mail has run yet. LOL |

Some things I need to work on.
Do we make ourselves friendly toward visitors at our worship services? Most of the times the visitors are members from other congregations. Shouldn't we make ourselves friendly to our brothers and sisters? This takes a lot of effort to try and get around to everyone. I am trying to speak to as many of our own members b/c we have grown so much. I like getting and giving hugs to the children. I come home so encouraged. I am afraid that it is so easy to just talk with our friends that we neglect to talk to others.
Do we take more time with people who are lonely or widowed? One of these days we may "in their shoes." I have found that most of these people crave your undivided attention. This take time and patience on our part. I have learned so much from being around them. (My son says I need to work in geriatrics. haha) My mom alway says that when you are feeling sorry for yourself, down or lonely, visit the nursing home b/c we will come back feeling thankful.
Do we take the time to tell people thank you or even write a thank you note? Do we thank the preacher, elders, deacons, teachers, song leader, those who prepare the Lord's Supper, those who wrestle with young children, those who clean the church building, write the bulletin, etc. . .?
At our worship services, we have had a girl visiting off and on for over a year. She was living in Bowling Green and would come here to visit her family. Last week she moved back in with her family. She has been a Christian for about 8 years (I think). ALL her family are Mennonites. I am impressed with how she has been coming to worship. The one question she has asked me several times was if we had Bible classes during the week. I told her that someone would be glad to have a class with her. Tonight she was talking about classes again. The preacher told her he would be glad to set up some classes. She told me after that that her goal was to have Bible classes at HER home where she lives with her Mennonite family so THEY can learn about the Bible. I had chill bumps that she has been so dedicated to serving God and wants her family to learn what God wants them do do. I think she told me she has 9 sister and 2 brothers. Are we this concerned about our family or others who do not know the truth? This is something I really need to work on.

Philippians 2:3-5 "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." |

I just made this cake and the house smells sooo good. It is SO rich. If you are on a diet you might not want to make it. Just smelling it can make you gain weight. :D
Texas Sheet Cake
Combine in a mixing bowl:
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
In a saucepan, melt:
2 sticks butter
Add 4 heaping tablespoons cocoa. Stir together.
Add 1 cup boiling water, allow mixture to boil for 30 seconds, then turn off heat. Pour over flour mixture, and stir lightly to cool.
In measuring cup, pour 1/2 cup buttermilk.
Add:
2 beaten eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
Stir buttermilk mixture into butter/chocolate mixture. Pour into SHEET CAKE pan (with sides on it) and bake at 350-degrees for 20 minutes.
While cake is baking, make icing:
Chop 1/2 cup pecans finely.
Melt 1 and 3/4 STICKS butter in a saucepan.
Add 4 heaping tablespoons cocoa, stir to combine, then turn off heat.
Add:
6 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 lb minus 1/2 cup powdered sugar
Stir together.
Add pecans, stir together, and pour over warm cake.
Cut into squares, eat, and totally wig out over the fact that you’ve just made the best chocolate sheet cake. Ever.

Last night I got to go see and hold my new great-nephew! He is so cute! His dad's appendix had ruptured a couple of weeks ago and is doing better. His mom looks great and is doing well after a c-section. |
