I didn't have time to go out to eat today for lunch, so I spent a few minutes reading through Ephesians while eating a bowl of instant oatmeal (what I had in the office).
It was quite refreshing (the reading, not the oatmeal), and it's amazing how many lessons pop right out of one little (6 chapter) book.
You are obviously failing as a husband to educate your wife in the sports arena. Should I have Colton come over and tutor her? Give him an afternoon...she'll know every Astro player and his number, beginning in the 2005 year! LOL!
I figure my semi-auto Remington Shotgun loaded with buckshot and fiber-optic sights should make a good hog gun. Especially since I can load it with 10 shells.
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. -Jermiah 29:7 ESV
I thought it was pretty fitting given recent events.
Never know when you're going to run into a little jewel in the scripture. If you get a chance, take a look at the context in which this was written.
I try my best to be positive about things, and indeed I am not one to worry about things in terms of what happens to our country, but I'm not sure how to think about the election of a man of highly questionable character due frankly to his race and an incredibly biased mainstream media.
I think that the entire country has taken a big 'ol drink of the Kool-aid. The fact that this guy can win the White House just further reinforces my belief that the system is very broken.
I still love my country, I'll still pay my taxes (probably going to be higher now). But you know what, it's all going to be OK.
So, let's just settle in and see what happens. Ever bought a shiny new toy, and then realize when you got it home that you'd made a serious mistake?
I'm going to the meeting in Lake Charles tomorrow....anybody who is interested should let me know, I'm leaving from LaPorte (my office at Miller Cutoff at 5:00.
:) Or just beat me over the head but don't shoot me like you are going to shoot Caleb. I don't want to die. Plus you'll make Amy really unhappy, by taking away her buddy and you'll be forced to start doing things with her. :)
And now, for my monthly entry (and with audience participation requested for all 2 people who will actually read my blog.)
After very briefly looking at the pleo-controversy over instrumental music/authority (which I must ashamedly say does NOT reflect well upon those claiming to be the harmonious body of Christ), I've decided that I need to organize some personal thoughts.
Now, this is where YOU come in.
Hebrews 6:1-3 states (NKJV):
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this we will[a] do if God permits.
Given the context of the Hebrew letter, I would say that these are things the Hebrew writer expected his audience to have already come to an understanding about.
What would YOU say are the "elementary principles" that should be the foundation of our beliefs and teaching. (yes, I know that there is an enumerated list in the verse, I'm curious what everyone considers to be "fundamental")? What subjects do you feel lay the groundwork for how we answer any question (i.e. instrumental music)? Would you say that the list above covers every fundamental?
My list is in development and will be shared shortly.
Good question. I believe the list given in the verse is an excellent list of "fundamentals." Perhaps not totally exhaustive, for example I think authority is very fundamental
Yet I believe it is very important the we properly understand fundamental. Fundamental is defined as "as a basis supporting existence or determining essential structure or function" Unfortunately, I think some brethren have seen the "non-fundamentals" as unnecessary. Fundamental does not mean the only thing necessary, but means that it is the basic, or building block. Just because these things are fundamentals does not mean the rest of revealed truth is not necessary for us, and that we are not bound to it. This seems to be one of the very criticism inherent in the charge against the Hebrew brethren in this chapter. They needed the fundamentals, but they also needed more advanced truth as well, they just had failed to grasp the basics and were unable to grow to handle the more difficult truths
Heb 5:2 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Yes...I understand what a fundamental is. My question is, what concepts are fundamental to answering other questions. For example, a fundamental would be the authenticity of the bible (we can't answer any other questions unless we have already reached an understanding that the Bible is where we should look for answers)
