Mmmm. 11-30-08 01:14pm CST
First beefstick of the season. Normally I only eat these around the holidays. My grandmother (ever since I was little) in lieu of a Christmas card she'd get you like a 2 foot long beef stick with a bow stuck to it. If you are not a sausage or salami person and you don't appreciate the novelty of not knowing exactly what's in a hot dog, this snack is not for you! I actually got this specimen from target, it's about 4-5 inches long. Normally I head out to the mall and crash the hickory farms stand (or call up my grandmother for any extras!)

I could barely move this morning so I laid on the couch and broke out Abbi's foam Christmas cards. I let her decorate them for stocking stuffers for some of our family members. We're not done yet, but I think she enjoyed herself. I've also broken out the solo piano music in the last week or so, Christmasy or not, normally I only listen to solo piano music during the winter months. I went light on the decorations this year, mainly containing them to the living room, but we have our tree up and our advent calendar is ready to start tomorrow!

Oh, and the Christmas parade is thursday-woot! I just love watching the parade. We're hard core too. We park a car downtown where we want to be that morning, then about an hour before the parade starts we'll swap it with the car we're actually driving in, and move the other one down the road. That way we can sit in our car with the back hatch up if it's a little chilly outside!

What have you done lately to get yourself ready for Christmas?

---------------------------------

It's snowing! There are puddles on the ground so it won't stick (never does!) but Abbi and I were so excited to look out the door and see big ol snowflakes this morning!
little_mommaI had a brief nauseous moment when I read about you eating a beefstick! Gross! :) It's funny though, my dad (a postman) always gets a couple of hickory farms gift sets for Christmas and we always give them to my uncle. :) I love Christmas! It is definitely my favorite time of the year! Friday night we drove around and looked at Christmas lights...Ava loved that. I think we are going to start doing that every Friday night until Christmas. We put up our Christmas tree yesterday! Ava absolutely loves it...but she calls it our Snowman Tree...not sure why, I don't have any snowman ornaments or anything. Another tradition we have is watching Christmas movies. We start the day after Thanksgiving and watch them almost every night until Christmas. Jonathan buys me a new Christmas DVD every year that I get to open on Christmas Eve and we watch it last. I got Ava some foam Christmas ornaments to decorate too, so we're going to let her hand those out. Oh, and I wrapped 3 presents already! Sorry this was so long...Christmas just gets me so excited!

Christmas Traditions 11-25-08 02:35pm CST
How do you celebrate Christmas? Even if you are not an avid reader of my blog and I wouldn't know you from Jane Doe down the road, please share your traditions and views on the holidays.

We celebrate the secular aspects of Christmas. We talk about Santa and the North Pole and all that jazz, but we often bring up that he is pretend. I'm sorry if my child spills the beans to yours in the upcoming years-we've told her that Santa being pretend is a big secret! I really was just going to let things fall where they may on the Santa situation until my daughter developed a phobia of the man. You'd think last year he beat her on the side of the road with the reaction she has towards him. It seemed to ease her thoughts a bit when we finally said he was pretend. She's been on the 'pretend' kick for awhile, so she caught on pretty quickly. We don't give gifts 'from Santa' but we still celebrate opening gifts Christmas morning. Last year was the first year without my mother (We usually opened gifts with them on Christmas day morning) and we decided to have a big breakfast at our house at about 9am. Last year we had my dad, step mom, sister and grandad, will's mom, dad, brother, grandmother, grandfather and uncle over and we did our personal exchanges then. Who needs Santa, when you have a big family like ours! We still eat Christmas eve dinners and Christmas lunches with the family along with those personal gift exchanges.

We choose not to celebrate the "Christian" aspect of Christmas. I was not raised in the church and personally don't have a problem with some of the more denominational views, but my husband and his family are so far from that, we just decided it was the best decision not to make a big deal of the whole nativity aspect. I'd also like to point out that contrary to what most Christians believe, the denominational world doesn't teach that Jesus was 'born on Christmas.' I have been a member of many many churches and was never taught that. They set that day aside to remember that particular story on that day, but all that I was involved in, recognized the fallacy in claiming it happened on a particular current calendar day. To me, having the birth of Jesus story preached on a Sunday before Christmas is the same as preaching something about our country on a Sunday surrounding 9/11. We also celebrate all the secular holidays because we don't see much difference in celebrating a nationally observed holiday or a personal birthday party.

Whether you choose to celebrate this holiday religiously or secularly -or both as I did growing up- remember the spirit of the season is giving. I hope to help someone out this holiday season in some way. I don't have the money to just dole out to needing people, but I really hope to be an encouragement otherwise.

My intent is not to start a Christmas debate, but if that's where it goes, and it stays respectful, have at it. I'm just curious as to how other Christians celebrate Christmas now that I've had a few years in a new faith to mull over my personal beliefs. So how do you celebrate Christmas?
comadeThanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday!! I love ALL of the food and we usually only make these certain foods once a year so I really look forward to it. I celebrated xmas religiously when I was catholic and then my family became Christians when I was around 8 and I think by 10 we stopped celebrating all together. Instead we have a family day on New Year's Day, only immediate family, and we exchange gifts then altough this yr we are not bc of financial reasons but we will still get together and just spend the day as family and have fun and eat food!
autiger1010Well, our Christmas traditions are morphing since the meshing of two families. Christmas Eve morning is Jonathan's parents time for gift exchanging with us (they somehow convinced Jonathan that he was so special Santa came a day early as a child!). Christmas Eve was always a tradition with my family. My Nanny always came over that night and we had a dinner, and always got to open one of my gifts (and the rest on Christmas morning). The holiday is filled with lots of homemade food and family.
autiger1010Growing up a Christian, I never celebrated Christmas religiously. It's not that I believe that it's not special that our Savior was born on this earth, but no where in the Bible does God command us to celebrate it as a holiday; this was something man created. God has commanded that we celebrate our Jesus's death every Sunday. I believe God wants us to focus on this and what this means to us as Christians-maybe that's why He didn't command us to celebrate Jesus' birth.
autiger1010I hope that makes sense.
autiger1010To answer your main question, it has always been a time of family, sharing, gifts and yummy food! Mama and I always cook lots of homemade desserts for Christmas. We eat way too much! :)
quackWhen I taught at UNA, I shared an office with a lady who attended a Baptist church. She asked me once if it was true that "Church-of-Christ's" didn't believe Jesus was born on Christmas. We had a discussion about how it sort of evolved from celebrations of winter solstice (?) and she thought I had lost my mind! We still do "Santa", though my kids are a little older. The rule is that if you say Santa isn't real, he can't bring you anything. Of course, we still talk about the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny, too! My mom still gives me a "Santa Box".
quackI wouldn't worry about Sara spilling the beans. A little boy in Emily's kindergarten class told Emily there was no Santa, but she didn't believe him. She did think he was a meanie for lying to her, but she got over it!
bzyabsmaWe listen to all the secular Christmas music (although I must say that I love the traditional "Christmas" songs I've heard all my life too - O Holy Night is one of the most beautiful songs ever written!) but we don't celebrate it in a religious way at all. Just a fun time with everyone, presents, lots of food, games, movies, and noisy kids (and adults, too)! I grew up never celebrating it in a religious sense, having found proof that it could not have happened on that day, etc. and also just that we aren't told to commemorate it in any special way, but rather to celebrate His death on a weekly basis. We also never 'did' Santa and my kids never believed in him for real, but has always been a fun imaginary character this time of year. Hope you all have a great holiday season!!
lovinstlouis02We do the Santa thing and not the religious aspect.
curlieWe do the secular thing, although I do not think it's wrong to celebrate it religiously within your family. I also think it's definitely okay to sing songs about Jesus' birth and think it's kind of odd that we avoid these anytime during the year.
leprechaun_preachertomorrow night
quackWhen I was in college, we had classes at different houses after services Sunday night. I remember Curtis Pope (our preacher) leading "Joy to the World" at one of the classes. He said he imagined the neighbors saying, "Those crazy Cambellites! Don't they know it's April?!"
lovinstlouis02After my husband died, who was the dressing person in our family at Thanksgiving, I didn't allow anyone to make it for years. Finally, I decided it should be his legacy, so now I make it to honor him and have fine tuned the recipe to be probably even better :) Just an idea for you :)
soccerlover6wise choice :) Happy thanksgiving!
autiger1010I thought of Abbi today when I saw Dora's balloon on the parade. :)
debsherbsHi any time you are ready just send me a picture of the outfit you want to have a bow to match or colors you want and I'll make them! Email me your address so I can send you a free sample of my work! Thanks!
debsherbsIt is my favorite time of the year! I think it goes back to growing up in a disfunctional family (I lived with my grandparents so all of the families came in & out of our house. & So did their problems) it was the only time of the year when everyone was nice to each other! After I got married, we have didn't make a big fuss over Christmas until our kids were 3! We give gifts, We open all of our gifts on Christmas Eve and then Daddy Santa's gifts were found under the tree on Christmas morning. We listened to Christmas music while the boys helped me decorate the tree! We told the kids that Santa was no different than big bird or bert & ernie, simply a person dressed in a costume. They were told that Daddy paid for all their toys. When the boys grew up they both told us that they were so glad that we did not lie to them. And it made them completely trust us to always tell them the truth. We also taught them that it was not actually Christ birthday and that the scriptures told us to celebrate Christ death, not His birth. Though we are so thankful for His birth! Being a minister's family we also celebrate according to the people in the congregation.
quackTrue, for what it was, it was good. I do respect her for holding her ground and not caving to a big studio.
debsherbsI will check again Sara and see if I got them. I don't remember getting them. But I will let you know!
debsherbsI looked Sara & I did not receive any pictures from you on any of my emails. So if you could resend them that would be great! I don't know why the others didn't get through! Thanks Sara!

Bows! 10-15-08 11:51am CST
This is just to pass along some info. She is selling hand made adorable little hair bows to raise some money. She's needing some surgeries done and has some finicky insurance plan that won't cover much of it. Take a look at the bows, they are adorable.

Update 10-14-08 08:46am CST
Only because I'm tired of scrolling for private comments, and going back weeks for public comments.

Abbi has a stomach bug this week, I was under the impression that they went away more or less after 24 hours. Well it's hour 48 now and still kicking. How can I tell if it's something she ate or just a bug? Or some more serious infection? I don't think it's anything she ate, we all ate the same thing before she got sick and no one else has thrown up (yet). It's a well known rule in this house that I do poop and Will does puke. Boy has he had his hands full lately. If you saw a man standing outside hosing off bed linens at 2 am last night so they could go into the wash, I'll claim him. As soon as abbi's stomach settles and he wakes up and is able to watch her, I'm going to buy a mattress pad and sheets. We only have one set and I never bought more because 'they were just too expensive.' Well last night, I would've gone in debt just to have an extra set. We're on a pallet on the living room floor now.

Will is taking me to Nashville on Friday. Supposedly for our anniversary-2 weeks ago. I guess it should be fun. It's hard for me to just let go and enjoy it when I know how much it costs to do something like that. At least gas went down. I'm still looking for a part time job btw. I don't have childcare for Abbi so anything I look in to she has to come, and be well occupied for the entire duration of whatever I'm doing. I think I've come up with my dream job. Personal shopper. How fun would that be, right? I should move to a big rich city just so I can go Christmas, grocery or clothes shopping for someone who can't or won't do it for themselves. I'm hoping to help shut-ins with their groceries when it's feasible that I do service work. We just can't afford the gas hit right now.

That's about all going on with us, what's been going on with you lately?
comadePoor Abbi!! That's great that Will can handle the throw up though =)
saraoh, he can't. he threw up quite a few times out of reaction. he does handle it better than poop though.
anna_marieHey! I'm sorry to hear Abbi's sick. Hopefully she'll be feeling better soon!
leprechaun_preacherHey I love that pic of Abbi looking out at the ocean. Would you email it to me and let me play with it. I have a great idea for it and the one on here is too small to steal. I tried already. joshuah.l.ellis@gmail.com. (I hope this doesn't sound like too werid of a request, but if it does, sorry) :-)
quackSorry about Abbi, but congratulations on Will. Sounds like he's pretty much over his earlier problems if he's able to tackle those things.
jaydonGet better soon Abbi!!! :)
I have a cleaning job and I take Anaja with me, this job has worked out very well for me.
jenlew21I know the financial crunch too! Tom's been off wrk for two days this week and one day each week for the last month! We've only been making 1/3 of what we need to pay bills for the last 2 months or so and now I don't know what to do or if I can even pay an of them. Bank account has been overdrawn for over a month only going positive once...briefly. :P
Everything is crashing...at least we're not the only ones.
Have a fun trip and just let go and say to yourself you guys deserve it!! ;)
jenlew21Yeah we're trying and hard over the job thing. I love to do watercolors and lots of other areas as well. If you need advice over something just let me know and I'll try to help the best I can. ;)
bzyabsmaWe've been through things like that (naturally with 5 kids) and sometimes it even ended up in MY bed if one of them decided they needed to come tell me they were sick right before they vomited. Ugh...I usually would end up putting a huge towel down on their bed where they slept and a wastebasket or bucket within reach. I also remember being so sick myself before that I ended up just sleeping in the bathtub so I didn't have to go far.
debsherbsAwe! Abbi is so cute! It is going to be fun designing bows for her! And thank you for the promotion!
debsherbsThanks for the add!
debsherbsHi Sara those sites would not come up. So just email them to me that way I can just double click on them and go right to them. Thank you!!
debsherbsDon't rush Sara you are not holding me up at all. I want it to be fun for you!
lilyofthevalleyThose are so cute!

Hope you guys are over the stomach bug.
jenlew21Here! Here!! Sister!! :)
bbeasleyFrom the movie Enchanted. We love that movie and the girls were asking for that song last night.
isabeau_danjouThanks. :) That is very encouraging advice!
isabeau_danjouI have actually purposefully not accepted any invitations to any of the "agenda" groups as I've been calling them lately, just because I don't want to let anyone affect how I feel. I want to learn for myself and ask when I need to. And so far people have been so helpful! Thanks again
debsherbsWow, with the week that you have had, no wonder the FMS or Fibro flared up. Listen of all my mom's who will understand when I have those days with my FMS & back, it will be you. So just take a breath and it will get done when you can. I'll be posting more bows. And I'm taking the ones for Halloween and redesgning those for fall bows! Time is a friend to me, because I can function at times and it takes me longer to do something. Thank you for being so sweet!
autiger1010Hey! I've been meaning to call...been missing you lately!! We need to get together soon. Nikki told me y'all had fun in Nashville; I'm glad because you both deserved it!
queenie03Will ya'll be at Gooch on Sunday night?
aubrey_leighI agree 100% with what you posted.

Essentially, with the line of logic that homosexuality is a sin, so we all have to stand behind the Republican party and vote against it, we'd also have to ensure that they upheld laws against all sin, not just that one. I naturally don't agree with it, but that doesn't make it my right to decide whether or not others make a conscious decision to marry or not. Just my pennysworth.
larieWhat a small world. It is sooo much fun having cousins close in age. I'm excited that our girls will be close this time as well. Your little girls' pictures on here are precious too.

Breaking Dawn 08-02-08 10:03pm CST
Well I didn't get to go to a release party as I'd hoped to last night, but I suckered Will into coming with me this morning at about 10:30 to get the book. And here it is 11:00 pm and I've just finished it! I did take a break to cook lunch/dinner and take care of Abbi obviously, but I've spent the majority of my day on the couch with that book.

And boy, was it good!
quackI need to get that. It just had to come out the Saturday before school starts back!
sarAbbi is so cute, she is really getting big!
chris_rAha! Now I know why Will was online all day yesterday!
sara:D
chris_rI can see my friends list when I sign in. It's just hidden from everyone else.
little_mommaI don't know...I hope to, but I am just going to see how I am feeling...hopefully I will be over this sickness by then. Are you thinking about taking Abbi? We absolutely love it...it was so good for Ava in so many ways and her teacher was great. Definitely worth the money.
little_mommaGreat! Y'all will really enjoy it. If we get to go, we are going to do the Thursday class because that is the teacher we have had before. Yeah, I hope I start feeling better soon too...it is much more difficult this time around with a almost 2 year old!
chris_rDoes Will have Call of Duty 4 or was he just borrowing it?
tryingtocopeThanks!
krzkrn728Just in case you didn't get the text, I got your message.
autiger1010We totally understand!
chris_rThis whole time I thought you just ignored my question; then I happened to scroll down to my previous entry and saw that you had replied. :) Thanks.
chris_rOh yeah, that was a great game. Have him try Mass Effect - it's made by the same people and it has a similar style.
quackwill do!
bzyabsmaOk, I will. Normally jobs at ABS go to parents of kids there, although that's not always the case, but usually people are looking for help to pay their tuition bill. I am tempted to check into something part time at Publix if/when it ever opens here. Not sure how I could manage it, but I wouldn't mind something in the floral dept or something like that. Does that sound like something you might be interested in? It would be close to you, too. I know that's a few months away (I'm still crossing my fingers for the Dec. 15 date for them to open!) but yes, if I hear of anything I will pass it along.
bzyabsmaWell, that makes sense considering your situation. I actually tried to 'change' my position at ABS from cafeteria to teacher's aide, which is more my cup of tea, but seeing as how I have been in this position for almost 5 years, they need me to stay there (not a popular or greatly desired one, by most people). I've considered going back to school to get my teaching degree, since I've been put into the single parent lifestyle now, and that's something I sorta wanted to do but didn't have enough compulsion to do back then. I will definitely keep my ears open around and if I hear of anyone like that who would need some help, I'll let you know (and give them your name!).
julietuckerhey sara! how is potty training going? i read one of your earlier blogs.
julietuckerwe help potty train some of the kids we work with. it's always an interesting experience.
little_mommaOh really? Did you notice that Ava drove me crazy?? :) No, she really wasn't that bad, but she just would not be still!
tommygirlI bounced over here and noticed your post about a new group...would you add me?
tommygirlI understand completely. I'm not sure what the few qualifications are but I'm in my 30s. I'm touched by this issue in more than one of the situations you mentioned. The support would be wonderful.
tommygirlthank you :)
wifeletIs this Sara Paulsen? I'm trying to figure out where I know you from, b/c I think I do ...
tatertoti'm usually good for a smile:)
