What a fun filled few weeks it has been. This year was the first time in 22 years i haven't had thanksgiving with my parents. Mrs. Holladay saw to it that i was well fed and welcomed. I had excellent food and an even better time getting to hang out with her and her family. I believe i was also there at the inception of a new tradition- seafood chowder during dessert.
Main difference in the northern and southern thanksgiving- stouffer's/stove top does not make the dressing down here. The dressing was cornbread and it was delicious. I'm not picking favorites as i love pretty much all food. after thanksgiving lunner I got to partake in techy conversations. Andrew and i then headed over to the Smith residence where i got another full course of desserts and heard stories that made me actually laugh out loud. I should note that my laugh is usually a controlled chuckle and i can stop it whenever i feel comedic timing deems an immediate halt of joviality a necessity.
beyond that.. what's new, what's new.... not a whole lot.
I worked the afternoon shift of Black friday- it was amazingly dull. No moments of sweet revenge on customers for their crimes against my faith in humanity. Plenty of weird people still came in. now is the trek towards xmas.
last year, i didn't really like xmas too much because i was bitter and single and regretting it. Maybe that has tainted the holiday for me, but i'm pretty sure i just don't like it too much. I'm all for spending time with family and giving gifts, but i feel like the holidays force it upon you. Much like the government forces you to give to charity through taxes. Yup, the holidays are another facet of socialism. That plus my gifts feel marginally inadequate in comparison to all the opportunity costs ive incurred upon my parents. AND to make matters worse, my dad rarely gives out a wish list and my mom usually directly specifies exactly what she wants for xmas, which leaves little room for personalization (what's on your list this year, mom?). I am looking forward to heading home and doing almost nothing for a week.
My list, you ask? Why, it's on the left, under links.
I've been meh in the productive category as far as learning goes. I read a few 'scholarly articles' every couple of days. I can't say i have a lot of interesting things to impart on you all, i can say i am extremely interested in the way people make decisions. A few books on my wishlist are actually textbooks, which is odd, but they really do seem interesting. I've been trying to read some novels and collections of short stories, and in the realm of non-fiction- a couple of history books, but i'm not finding myself motivated to buckle down so i ordered a few books the other night. By a few i mean around 6. 4 of which were bought for $.50 with $4 shipping attached. They should keep me busy for a while.
Bears play the vikings tomorrow for the top of the nfc north. I so badly wish i had a way to watch it. Since i don't i get to watch the 2-d version on sportsline.com. Oh how i wish nfl's gamepass would come to the US- and you could select a plan that only followed one team instead of all teams and make it have a more reasonable price. College football is fun and all, i just like pro more. Part of it is the level of play, i can't put my finger on the other part. Though what will be neat about knowing something about college football is seeing what these guys that were good in college go on to do in the pros.
i'm going to end without really coming to a point because i'm tired and i can, but then again, when do i ever really end with a point? |

I and my dillinger four can cozy are doing well. not much else to report.
Some friends and i did some recording as we were already singing that night. so here is a demo from the northwood jubilee gospel choir- Click this and then find where it says download amidst all the other junk on the page.
obama visited the white house the other day... that must've been awkward: "Hey, i'm the guy that won a campaign talking smack about your entire platform."
i work with lazy people.
Not only do i work with college kids who work 10 hours a week so they can have drinking money, i work with weak women who can't pick up boxes of paper, i work with two pregnant women, an obese man, and a guy who can barely walk (after trying to chase down the guys who stole his wife's laptop) who can neither climb ladders or lift heavy things. I work with several smokers who take breaks for 10 minutes roughly every hour. The pregnant women are both managers, both take frequent trips to the bathroom and many times i've walked into the break room to find them asleep, or just watching tv while eating popcorn. I work with people who refuse to learn how to work in other parts of the store, and managers who spend hours of their day on personal calls.
It's just not fair.
Usually i have to pick up the slack. All day long i'm scouring ladders putting overstock up top, i'm fetching paper and furniture, i'm on the floor by myself for large amounts of time. Yet we all still get paid exactly the same.
hourly wages are one of the greatest promoters of socialism. they stop everyone from doing any more than the bare minimum. These people who do nothing got the same 2% raise as me last year. This is why i've decided to become an obese, pregnant, smoker with the strength of a 10 year old and a hatred of learning anything new that is office depot related. How well do we think this is going to fly? |

I love rodents. Really, pets in general, but rodents are just convenient. You hold them in your hand when you want, when you're sick of them or they defecate everywhere you put them back in their cage indefinitely. Just because i love them doesn't mean i'm opposed to sampling them.
Yesterday i wanted to make an eggplant dish, so i bought the appropriate items from publix. I've never cooked with eggplant before. As i was walking around i noticed a stranger meat section- whole ducks, quail, and rabbit. Thinking it sounded exciting i got some bread crumbs to fry the rabbit.
I'd never worked with eggplant, or rabbit before, so this was all an interesting experience. Eggplant was pretty simple. April came over to help and lent me the recipe for eggplant parmigiana. I'd never fried anything before, officially, so she taught me how.
We got to messing around with the rabbit. It's like a far leaner and tougher chicken. April was pretty grossed out by it, i was just wishing we had sharper knives. For a pack of rabbit that was about 10 bucks, we maybe got 2 lbs of meat. Also, there were some organs lying around. So i fried myself a kidney and a liver. I would've done the heart too, but it was still a tad bloody and creeped me out.
We fried both the rabbit and eggplant in the same base batter- egg, parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic. In retrospect i should've added something else- but food's for experimenting. Then the rabbit we dipped in bread crumbs. Fried both, took them over to our friend's house, and cooked them in marinara sauce at about 350 for 20 minutes under foil. Then we covered them with some cheese and let them brown for 5 minutes.
The rabbit was delicious. I wasn't as big a fan of my own eggplant as i am olive garden's, but it was still pretty good. I learned how to fry, which will be an invaluable tool for making everything i already cook better. What to make next week? |
