Paul graduated from Western today with his Master's in Public Administration. We are so happy for him. We had a good, but quick visit, with Paul & Amy and Matt.
I teased Paul Sunday night that I'd never seen anyone go to the extreme that he did to be sure his folks could pick him out in the crowd---carrying in the American flag, no less!! :) Really, that was so neat...I hope you can at least tell who he is in my pics...Glad we got to see you even if it was across the arena!
Our school district offers a "Holiday Challenge" every year starting just before Thanksgiving and ending when we go back after the new year. It's to not gain more than two pounds throughout the entire season. I don't know if I'll make it this year. Four years ago when I was losing weight, I actually lost about five pounds. I took off about 30 total, and I've put 9 back on over the last year. It's time to get serious here before I'm back where I started.
This was emailed to me. It was in the Letters section of the Tampa Tribune on Friday, October 31, 2008:
The following is often quoted as being by Abraham Lincoln, but it was written by the Rev. William J. H. Boetcker, who lectured around the United States about industrial relations at the turn of the 20th century.
"You cannot bring prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot further brotherhood of men by inciting class hatred. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."
It seems to be timeless advice, doesn't it. Nancy Heilman,Tampa
Seems timeless to me too. Please carefully consider the candidates before you vote on Tuesday.
Steven's mom came on Labor Day weekend. We had a really nice visit with her.
The weekend of the 12th I took her to Bowling Green and she was going to spend the weekend with John and Jane through Monday, while I spent some time with the kids and worked on some things at the house in BG. Ended up John was sick and she didn't get to go, so we did a couple things around BG and then on Monday we spent the part of the day stripping wallpaper from the hallway. We almost got it finished and that just leaves the entry way to do. Amy had a fabric steamer, but it worked REALLY well on wallpaper.
On Tuesday we drove to Franklin, TN and went to the fabric store there--it is wonderful--all kinds of quilting materials. If I ever get time I am going to scrapbook and quilt. We met Jeannie and went to a children's store having a sale and then had lunch at a great restaurant in Franklin. We were going to do to the tearoom there, but I didn't know that it wasn't open on Tuesday. We drove on to Athens and went to Nanette's and CEI and then I drove 31 the rest of the way home in order to stop at the grocery stores along the way to try to find Robin Hood or Hudson Cream flour for Ginnie. It was a nice drive--but no luck on either of those kinds of flour.
On the 20th we went to see Jim Brickman in concert at the Hoover Library. What a great venue--only 250 seats. Jim Brickman was very good. It was Ginnie's first concert. John, Janet and Jeannie came with us also. It was fun--Jeannie and I got Jim's autograph. Stopped on the way back and ate at Longhorn. It was a good evening.
We made a quick trip back to BG last weekend--up Friday and back Saturday to start Ginnie's connection to get back to Ohio. She went to John and Jane's for the weekend and then went to Ohio on Monday with a friend. We had dinner with Ginnie, John and Jane and Dan and Shawnee on Friday night. Got to spend a little time with the kids which was nice. Matt was pulling some posters for a job he had and I always love watching that--something I would like to learn to do. Had a late breakfast with Paul and Amy on Saturday a.m. (Matthew had to work) and
visited with them and then stopped at the BC to see Matthew and then headed home.
It is always so much fun to have Steven's mother here. She is just a terrific lady and just spoils us rotten while she is here cooking and baking. She worked on cutting out some quilt squares--she has made quilts for all the children and grandchildren.
Well, I'd better stop, once again I work on writing a book. Today was a wonderful day--I was off work and had a massage this morning and got my hair done this afternoon and actually got a few small things done around the house and made pizza for dinner.
Waiting for the debate to be over so I can watch the commentary. I just couldn't watch it.
I LOVE reading your books!!! It was a short visit w/ Ginnie since I had to work on Saturday. She didn't want to shop or do anything, just sit. She watched a John Wayne movie while I was working. We ate out for breakfast, which was yummy! I'm sure she was worn out. I'm just glad we had her for a bit...better than not at all!!!!!
This infection has been something else. Add to that the reaction I had to the last round of drugs. I'm hoping I can tolerate what I've been given this time. I was on the other drug over a week before I began to react. Hopefully it will be smooth sailing this time and I can lick it.
My mother-in-law is here and we are having a wonderful time. She is just the sweetest thing and has been cooking since she got here. Today she is making bread. Also Tuesday we had the best chicken I have ever tasted--a wonderful concoction with cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soup and done in the crock pot. We sure get spoiled while she is here.
Yesterday we went to a couple places on the Ten Mile Yard Sale and then we went to lunch at Sweet Peppers Deli and then the trip to the feared and dreaded Walmart. Honestly I put that trip off as long as I can.
We had a great time in BG last weekend. Steve helped Paul with the building of their pantry. Their house is so cute and they are doing such a great job on their remodeling projects. Had breakfast with some friends on Monday morning at Cracker Barrel and that was so nice. We went to Buckhead on Friday night to eat--I love going there. Made a list for Matt of the all movies he is going to sell--sale coming soon. He had to work Saturday, but we got some time with him on Sunday and Monday. Hated to leave as always--it's only three hours away--now I understand how my folks felt and except for about a year--we lived 8 or 12 hours from them. (this was the Reader's Digest condensed version--I agree with Frieda, you just can't get it the same the second time--so I didn't even try)
Well, gotta go--I have much to do and Saturday's always seem to just fly by.
Dinner tonight: I made stirfry (Carrots, onion, broccoli, cauliflower, Romas and corn) and Ginnie made a loaf of homemade bread and an apple pie. Yummy!!!
I've missed you! Glad you're feeling better! Thanks for picking up the microscope!
Rachel Hickman is coming to visit me this week. We'll have to get together for lunch Monday or Wednesday...Let me know if one of those would work for you...
That is annoying. I usually type mine in Word and save it. Then copy and past it into the entry screen. Glad you had a good weekend and that you tried to post about it.
