Not Another One! 11-21-08 02:01pm EST
Oh, dear. My younger daughter has received a pile of mail from colleges and universities today! She is a sophomore! I am so not ready to let go of Daughter Uno, much less Daughter Dos. I haven't seen Sarah's PSAT scores, but they must be decent, if colleges are already sending junk mail.

Congrats to Meghan on her successful LASIK surgery! I'm 8 years out on mine, and haven't had a moment of regret. I still occasionally am overwhelmed with the thought that I can see--very clearly!--without the aid of glasses or contacts. My vision went from 20/2200 to 20/15 virtually overnight.

I'm seeing lots of leaves on my deck that are begging to be vacuumed up.

I hope everyone has a wonderful, stupendous, fabulous weekend!
swiftbladesintherainHope your weekend is just good! :)
cruisingmomI want some of what you ate or swallowed. You are UP! WooHoo for UP! I plan on having a busy, but wonderful, stupendous, fabulous weekend.
duodamselDoes LASIK help w/ presbopia? I am nearsighted but now I'm getting farsighted too. Boo!
duodamselMost of our leaves (and neighbors) are UNDER the snow. They don't pick up leaves here anymore and I hadn't gotten busy w/ it. It's like January up here....and we're on the Weather Channel as they are doing LakeEffect stats. Fun....Fun
dewdropMust be hard letting go of a daughter...
lady_loveshercatsI wonder if daughters are harder to let leave the nest, than sons are?
mrsawwadyes she is..i think we talked about this before...you used to have one?
swiftbladesintherain*as* good. Just as good.
(I seem to be making a lot of typos lately that I don't see until it's too late. =P)

Homemade Laundry Detergent 11-18-08 04:10pm EST
By special request:

After lugging home umpteen bottles of detergent, and paying a small fortune for laundry supplies, I decided to give this a try. Plus, I'm allergic to the scent of many products (even "unscented" ones), so having control over the fragrance is a big advantage for me. It's a huge moneysaver when you have two teenaged girls who are big into layering and changing outfits multiple times a day. I am really pleased with how well it works!

I have well water and a high efficiency washer--if it works under both of those conditions, it will work under any condition.

I actually have two recipes and tend to use a combination of them; they are pretty forgiving.

Recipe 1
1 cup grated bar soap (bath soap), any kind
1/2 cup borax (more for hard water)
1/2 cup washing soda

Recipe 2
1/2 cup grated bar soap
1 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda

Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight plastic container or ziploc freezer bag. To use: Use 1 tablespoon of the recipe in place of regular laundry detergent; more if load is extra large or extra dirty.

Notes: I use the food processor to grate the soap and make lots of it at one time. I always at least double the recipe and keep a tablespoon in the container for ease of use. Washing soda is found in the laundry aisle at the grocery store in a box that looks like an overgrown box of baking soda (Arm & Hammer brand). Don't confuse washing soda and baking soda!

***Additional Notes (added 11/19): I use Yardley's of London Lavender soap--it's one of the few scented soaps I can tolerate. The original recipe says Ivory or Dove. Remember, you're only using 1 tbsp. per load--that's not much soap at all, and it seems to rinse out really well. Added bonus: I have not had even one load of wet laundry go sour overnight. Maybe it's the washing soda.
lady_loveshercatsWhat kind of bar soap do you use for grating?
cruisingmomWhat a sweetheart. You do requests. Humm, what else could I ask for???
Thanks for this. I have been using Charlies Soap, (charliesoap.com) but it is a bit pricey and I forgot to order it and I am about out...
My conditions are the same as yours, well water and a high efficiency front loader. I have all the ingredients, just need to mix up a batch. Thanks a million for sharing!!!

cyber_space_cadetHmmm, I wonder what kind of soap to use that wouldn't make Robbie's skin break out. He's CONSTANTLY itching from skin reactions to soap, but bar soaps are the WORST for some reason.
cyber_space_cadetHe has broken out badly from both. Ivory is the WORST of any soap he's ever used. On the other hand, so little, especially if it rinses out well, *may* not be a problem.
deputyheadmistressWe make our own laundry soap, too. Actually- she does. We've used all kinds of bar soap. Recently I bought some Castille bar soap because it's supposed to be reallly good for allergic people. Haven't tried it yet, though.
trevaesaThanks for the icing recipe. I'll have to try it. The one I used yesterday was too thick and rich.

Junk folder... In our old kitchen, we had a "junk drawer" and an "important junk drawer." I kept tax, bill, insurance, and all kinds of other important paperwork in there. This kitchen has less storage and we're lacking in filing equipment in the office, so I'm still working on devising an "important junk designated area." haha
cyber_space_cadetThanks for the tip!
misssonjaI wish more people were astounded!
jkmramWe have been going through the Love and Respect book, too, and are about half-way through it. It presents a neat concept and neatly encapsulates the major needs of man and woman, but I have been ready for him to move on to the next point several chapters ago... :o)

We have let this book go somewhere in the middle, and have moved on to The Love Dare. We are finding that one more practical. Perhaps we will get back to it... does it get better towards the end? :o)
meditationisNot bad, although I do have a headache. Dropped Mom off a while ago, so the girls and I are alone here.
sugar_mamaThanks for your nice compliment.:)
mayflowerFels Naptha soap work well, too,. But I bet the lavendar smells nicer!
mayflowerI must have missed adding you somewhere back there... And guess what??? I had lasik yesterday!!!!!
cyber_space_cadet^ Ohhhhh, LUCKY!

flyonthewallI'm thinking about the Smarties and chocolate together. I wonder....?
blessings_of_a_momYou love to be goofy like me. Does that make you really 33 or me 42? :)
duodamselI called you......just because I saw your name on my phone and thought of you.
duodamselI'm stealing your phrase.......
dewdroplol, i think I'm gonna steal that too! Only im gonna change a few things.
mr_and_mrs_berryI'm going to show the video below to Craig - it is, to my mind, blasphemous. Say hello to Indiana folks for us.
tennisfreak2013Yes, and thanks!
tommygirlI LOVE smarties!! My absolute favorite!!
lady_loveshercatsHmmm, interesting things to know!
cyber_space_cadetHey, Skeeter...do you know the name of that place you told me about where you watch a movie and eat dinner (at the same time)? Up on 86th? I think it would be cool to take my guys there over the holiday. We were supposed to go home, but that's probably not happening, so I want to plan a few things to do while ANDREW HAS OFF...wooooohooooo! (hehe.) Thanks.
cyber_space_cadetThanks!
cyber_space_cadet^ I lived in a dilapidated house most of my life. (And it was in lots worse shape when the kids and I lived there for seven months before moving here.) Being in a theater of similar circumstance for a couple of hours won't rattle us. ;-)

I often wish we still lived in that old place. I hate that whoever bought it will just sell it to someone else who'll tear it down and build another store. Ugh. I always wanted to renovate it, and had dreams about it since I was a kid. It's a really cool old place.
missynopetHahaha. Those are quotes from a very cute and funny animated cartoon about Little Red Riding Hood and all those characters and it's called Hoodwinked. You should watch it!
arsenal42? For me that was 20 years ago. Enjoy your youth while you still have it.
meditationisI was going to ask how Ted was; Hannah gave me the low-down in the a.m. Hope he gets to feeling better soon!
trevaesaWhile Dad is upset that it's not 70 in IN, I'm upset that it's not snowing in CO. They say it goes in 3 year cycles though... 2 decent years, 1 bad year of snow. This is supposedly an "off" year and next year should be the snowy one. I love snow.

Stay warm!
meditationisI've looked at FlyLady before; good stuff there that I have tried here and there...
cyber_space_cadet^ I'm a Born Organizer turned Sidetracked Home Executive. :P
memento_moriAwwww, thank you. I don't like to indulge in writing such gargantuous post most of the time because I always seem to start in the middle of my story and never find an ending! :)
cruisingmomYou are oh so interesting. And your best quality must be humbleness given your response.
Do you not watch TV or just nothing good enough to be a fave?
I think I saw a comment you left somewhere here in PleoLand about homemade laundry soap. Can you share the recipe with me?

The War on Courage 11-12-08 08:21am EST
The US economy was the most powerful, healthiest, most robust economy in the world. Then came 9/11, and the War on Terror. Then came the Iraq War and the war in Afghanistan. Then came the skyrocketing cost of oil and gas and the mortgage crisis. Down went the value of the dollar. Up went unemployment. Down went the stock market. Up went inflation. Up went the cost of food.

How could all this happen?

The answer is, our enemies used the media to scare us. While President Bush fought the War on Terror, our enemies fought the war on courage in the media and they have been winning. One way to win a war is to make your enemy so scared that they refuse to fight. They run - either actually or emotionally. That is what is happening in the US. The press has learned from Journalism 101 on that "if you want to sell newspapers, you must specialize in bad news." The media is an unwitting accomplice in the War on Courage. The media loves bad news. And we have been getting more and more scared as time went on. The more scared we get, the less we do and the more our enemies win. They could take over this country without firing a shot. How can you fight back and flourish and prosper at the same time?

*****

My husband received ^this^ in a sales e-mail and I don't know who to credit for it. It reflects to a great extent my opinion about the media and their role in the changing of America. However, I don't think the media is an "unwitting accomplice"--I think they know exactly what they are doing.

"News" is no longer news. Opinion is interjected in small, virtually unnoticeable ways, and we need to be able to parse the news and extract the real news from the hype. We need to observe our world and see whether it reflects the news reports or if our reality is something very different from what we hear. For me, there is a huge contrast between the two.

We (Christians) have no reason to be afraid. Our courage, our strength, our faith is under attack, but no more so than at any other time in history. This world *is* evil, and we are the light. The media is just another enemy to face for the cause of God, and we will endure--better yet, we have already conquered! They can only take our courage away if we let them.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
lesliemaucki've written an essay in a class of mine over the role of the press has not only over the people that read it, but also those it's reported about. My biggest problem was trying to find articles that were against the media. :) It's true they control a lot anymore of what we see/read and they never seem to report "good news." Good Thoughts, I agree with you.
blessings_of_a_momWe don't watch the news here. Stephen reads Freerepublic while at work, but other than that it doesn't make it into this house.
deputyheadmistressRegarding the Messiah mentality mentioned below- I collected some youtube videos that were odes to Obama during this election. There's one where students chant "Alpha, Omega, Alpha, Omega" before going into "Becuase Of Obama, I am inspired to be the next lawyer/architect, etc. There's one with 'Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary' playing in the background while Obama-bots with glazed eyes and worshipful smiles repeat endlessly 'President Barack Obama' and the text scrolling across the screen says things like "you are the sanctuary for a sacred vision. Visualize President Obama...."
There's "Barack Obama, he's the one and his truth shall set you free."
And then there's this one:

arsenal"One need not destroy one's enemy. One need only destroy his willingness to engage." Sun Tzu
cruisingmomI hope the press will be happy with 'itself' when Obamamania has fully delivered! Scary, scary possibilities...
misssonjaGreat post.
flyonthewallI studied journalism briefly at Indiana University in 1978-79. If any of us had written anything like what the media does now, we would have failed the class.
cyber_space_cadet^ Ohhh, how times have changed. :(
misssonjaThese guys analyze and critique the media -- worth checking out: www.cultureandmediainstitute.org
duodamselI agree and it's frustrating. I believe alot of it is age and what they have surrounded themselves with. I'm finding this 'hate America' attitude very disconcerting and widespread (thank you - Weather Underground!). Many I talk w/ mostly surround themselves w/ video games and pretty much don't know much but sound bites. History of any kind isn't important to them and neither are long-reaching effects of decisions. I fear for the generation spiritually (of course) and otherwise because they are callow in most areas.
lady_loveshercatsI agree with she^ said. My nephew and his wife are in their late 20's and they admit that they get all the politics they need to know from Saturday Night Live. They have been educated to distrust and dislike traditional politics and "white man's history". Their intolerance of religion is painful and yet they represent our country’s “hope of tomorrow”. Makes me feel sick to think how far our country has fallen. Can we raise enough Godly young men and women to fight for God in this new age?
tommygirlI don't watch the news. There is very little positive and my spirit just can't deal with that. I certainly don't watch the major networks. I find them biased.
tommygirlThat video is disturbing.
duodamselSometimes it's because between the time it is manufactured and tagged....and shipped...the price goes up so we remark them when they come in. The problem I have w/ these is that they are shoes that have been out for awhile and NOW they are marking them up....a dollar. It's silly and my mgr said so. grr

The thing I've been starting to see tho is a lack of teaching like in decades past and I hear things that sound like bits of Calvinism. I fear that some don't know the difference in some respects. *sigh*
memento_moriYeah, we do resemble eachother a bit. I can't see it as much, but I've been told we are confusing. :-D
cyber_space_cadetI'd heard about the Fairness Doctrine before this, but figured a lot of people wouldn't know about it and probably should. I didn't feel well enough to do anything but copy and paste. :)

Ohhhhh, I hope you guys do NOT get this nastiness. Yuck, yuck, yuck. The headaches have been just awful, not to mention all of the other ickiness.
lesliemauckI checked it out, and went a little further and found her list of doing to others. That was wonder. Thanks.

Messiah? 11-11-08 06:38am EST
I don't think President-Elect Obama (just trying to get used to the idea) ever called himself The Messiah, but he certainly allowed others to do so, and to my knowledge, has never denounced it.

Read Acts 12:22-23. The people were calling Herod a god, and he did not correct them and give the glory to God.
tommygirlI've been saying the entire election my biggest problem with him is he doesn't seem humble. The co-chair of his transition team said, "He is ready to rule from day one." What an odd thing to say.
cruisingmomHumble, he is not.
candyhereThat's the vibe I've always gotten from him. That he thinks himself to be high and mighty. But I have faith in God to "humble the proud". :o)
cruisingmomYou are trying to get me to call you a name this morning, aren't you??? I need to go accomplish something - ugh, housework is not as much fun as Pleo...
meditationis^^Could the co-chair have been alluding to the (imo, justified) charge during the election that Mr. Obama is inexperienced and not ready to lead? I will say that the co-chair's use of the word "rule" instead of "lead" or "govern" is not reassuring.
cyber_space_cadet^ I fully expect that the use of the word "rule" (in lieu of the word "lead")is perfectly in line with the attitude and the agenda of this president-elect and all of his cronies.
tommygirlYes, I think that was the gist of it. It's the use of the word "rule" that is bizarre.
blessings_of_a_momI have heard Rush call him that several times. If I remember correctly Hannity also called him that.

What is the scripture about Pride cometh before the fall?
cyber_space_cadetCheck out sonja's blog for a link to an article on some of Obama's Marxist sounding goals for a civilian national security force and a comparison to Hilter's similar beginnings. Click on the title to see the full article. (It's actually pretty short.)
duodamselNever thought about a fashion show...but then I only have 1 girl. :)
duodamselNOTICE:
The co-chair of Barack Obama's Transition Team, Valerie Jarrett, appeared on Meet the Press this weekend and used, shall we say, an interesting word to described what she thinks Barack Obama will be doing in January when he's officially sworn into office. She told Tom Brokaw that Obama will be ready to "rule" on day one. It's a word that reflects the worst fears that people have for Obama the "arrogant," the "messiah," that imagines he's here to "rule" instead of govern.
Jarret told Brokaw that "given the daunting challenges that we face, it's important that president elect Obama is prepared to really take power and begin to rule day one."
Someone needs to get to Jarrett and inform her that American politicians are not Kings and do not "rule" from office. But if this is the attitude of Obama's transition team, what does The One himself imagine he is about to unleash? Could the fears that Obama thinks he is being anointed America's King be far off with this sort of talk flying about?
soundandfurysome accusations do not merit response, because a response gives them attention they don't deserve, which opens the door to further accusations. It's the same idea as dealing with mccain attack ads, he needs to pick and choose his battles.
duodamselI got the above from Newsbusters.
Note now that in the clip she (Jarrett) states "take power and begin to rule" I think it's not just some slip of the tongue.
soundandfuryBush took off running with that idea, so i see no reason why the democrats shouldn't do it as well. Eye for an eye in politics.
lady_loveshercatsThe day after the election there were photos from all over the world showing the nations "rejoicing" on Obama's election. Sounds like the "messiah" mentality is more real than Christians would like.
dewdropWow, that's a neat comparison! Thanks for sharing!
lesliemauckThanks for your concern and note.
