Paul A. Gilje, coeditor of the Encyclopedia of American History, attended Brooklyn College from 1969-1974, and later received his Ph.D. at Brown University in 1980. He currently teaches American Revolutionary History at the University of Oklahoma. He has edited several books. The Encyclopedia of American History for example is filled with in-depth information intended for middle school and college students. I found this book at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library while searching for information on another project. I chose this source because encyclopedias are filled with information, and unlike dictionaries, it had an index that made it easy to use and find the article, even though the font size was difficult to read..
Robert Dale McHenry is an encyclopedist, editor, and author. He was Vice President and Editor in Chief of Encyclopedia Britannica from 1992-1997. He attended Northwest University in Evanston, Illinois, and earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration Degree. The source he edited was the Webster’s New Biographical Dictionary. It holds a basic overview of John Dickinson’s life and several of his penned documents. It was not as helpful as the Encyclopedia of American History, but it helped. It is helpful to middle school to high school students. I chose this source because it seemed like it would hold some personal information on John Dickinson that I could match with the conflict. It was easy to use, as all I had to do was follow the alphabetical order to D, for Dickinson. The lack of an index however, as usual, was not satisfying.
Richard B. Morris received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was a Historian, specializing on the American Revolutionary politics, law, and diplomatic relations. His book, the Encyclopedia of American History, was a great resource filled with information about John Dickinson and his views on the Revolutionary War. I would describe it as an in-depth overview of John Dickinson and the Olive Branch Petition. It is recommended for middle school and high school students. Its index made it easy to use, and among the articles under John Dickinson in the index one of the first was very helpful. However, the font size was relatively small and hard to read, as with several of the sources I used. The article examined Dickinson’s views of the Revolutionary War and his interest in writing the Olive Branch Petition. It was a very helpful source of information.
Gregory Fremont-Barnes is a historian holding a Doctorates Degree from the University of Oxford. He specializes in American Colonial history, and has written several books on the subject. His book, The American Revolutionary War; A Student Encyclopedia, is filled with information on documents that Dickinson wrote, along with Dickinson’s personal information (background information). It is recognizably an in-depth article on Dickinson and his political positions, specifically the case when he was in the defense of the proprietary family of Pennsylvania. It was very helpful because of the background information, and thus helped me establish the beginning of my piece. It is recommended for middle school and high school students. The book’s large font was easy to read and the index was very helpful in finding an article on Dickinson. However, it did not hold very much information on the Olive Branch Petition, which was disappointing. This book was very helpful in my piece because the information within helped me start it.
