Pirates...I remember...

In 1981, John McCort and I spent a month preaching in the Philippines on the island of Palawan. Working the southern end of the island from Brooke's Point, the native preachers and guides wanted to take us to some of the little islands off the coast, like Balabac. We made those plans a few days ahead, made advance payment to charter a "pumpboat" across to the location. Monday morning came, we arrived (about 5 of us) to take the day trip to Balabac. Some "authorities" met us at the dock and told us no marine traffic would be allowed. There was a pirate threat. We first thought it was a joke. No.

Re your comments about picking cotton...my mom picked cotton (during the 1920s) when she was a kid. She said it was the hardest, most back-breaking work she'd ever done in her life. When she was 18, she left home and went to Houston, where she hoped she'd never see another field of cotton. There has to be a better way to get well. :)

I've occasionally heard about pirates over the years. It's a problem that's never gone away. It's probably easier to be a pirate now than it was 500 years ago! If I understand correctly, the original purpose of a naval force was to protect shipping from pirates. According to this page, the Romans formed a "Classis Britannica" to protect the North Sea, which is the beginning of the British Navy.

great piracy video! -although I'm thinking that a small radar system seeing maybe only 1500 feet out, but sensitive enough to pick up small vessels, an alarm system, and a few m-16s of their own up on the high ground of the ship deck, and piracy could be drastically reduced fairly quickly. But I guess sailors would rather put up their hands and let the ship owners and the economy take the hit.

jrhudgins

I've got nothing on pirates...hope yall are better.

PS - We actually have pirates down here along the South Texas - Mexico border. Some were arrested yesterday . . . at a flea market selling DVD movies. Which illustrates how vital context is in the use of words!

Picked a few oranges from one of our trees today and juiced them. Perhaps this will be part of the healing process.

markroberts

hard manual laborer is often good for what ails you... what about heading out to pick some cotton or bale a few pastures full of hay? ;-)

wberk

I picked cotton once, at about the age of 13. Farmers would come in to Ft. Smith and load their trucks with teenage boys, take us out into the fields down next to the river and pay .25 per bag. I did that a half a day, picked one bag and bought a 15 cent coke on the way home. I don't put this on my resume.

wberk

And that's the cotton-pickin' truth.

ellwoodwd

since you don't like picking cotton then maybe you should try bucking hay.

maucknot

Watching football might help you heal as well.

jamiemmoon

hope it works

Chicken soup, and elderberry concentrate. Not mixed together of course, but I REALLY am sold on elderberry.

One of the points I’ll make from the pulpit Sunday - - -

“Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son,” (2 Jno. 9, ESV).

This was written by the apostle John, an elderly saint, inspired to write this by the Holy Spirit, writing to Christians. This is not like a forwarded email. This is not like a casual conversation. This is not Joe the Plumber. This is an apostle of Jesus Christ! And his concern in this context is truth (see 2 Jno. 1-4).

What does John care about? That children of God walk in truth ... The truth revealed through the apostles of Christ, that we have in the New Testament. John’s passion was, that children of God walk in the truth.

You cannot rise to the occasion of spiritual excellence – you cannot nurture a relationship with God – you cannot develop godly character …if you read something like this in the Bible, and consider it trivia!

adamandjessesdad

Most people today think that our religion needs to evolve.

jrhudgins

Awesome, as always.

jrhudgins

(I'm preaching from 2 John Sunday as well! It's a small book after all!)

kirbyj2

Missed you at the study. Your cameo was well appreciated.

maucknot

It's a great verse that I probably refer to at least once a month in my teaching. It's just a very dramatic and absolute statement.

dwatkins

Oh. I guess I don't have to come on Sunday anymore.

:)

jrhudgins

Excellent, thanks. Mine is a littler thing, I think! It may now contain some Berkleyan influences...

gslover

Good stuff! Missed you at the Bible study. Hope you will be there next year!

jrhudgins

mp3--I'll send it over.
