doubt 11-21-08 09:23am CST

Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) made the following very astute observation: "There lives more faith in honest doubt, believe me, than in half the creeds." Creeds that have been fabricated by men quite often result in little more than repetitious recitation and rigid application devoid of reflection. Although they may have been intended to clarify theological thought, too frequently they simply result in the termination of it. Once a theological position has been "officially" pronounced, many of those who embrace it perceive no need to ever again revisit that creed spiritually and intellectually. It has been carefully carved in stone and stands inviolate, inflexible and immovable. Indeed, to challenge, question or doubt such creeds in any way may well be perceived by the party powers as heresy. And yet, were it not for such "heretics," one has to wonder where we would be today with respect to the advance of God's kingdom on earth and our understanding of His divine design for our lives. Were it not for those few who dared to doubt, and who sought to scrutinize their church confessions in light of Scripture, how paltry our professions of faith would be today. As C. C. Colton (1780-1832) so insightfully observed, one rarely enters the temple of wisdom save through the vestibule of the personal doubts of honest, seeking minds.

That's pretty deep but sounds like, in simple terms, that: - Creeds aren't necessary and can be a crutch; studying for oneself is necessary.

I was like... wow, mom learned how to write! And then I saw the reference to a website, haha.

jarrod

So true! Even if the creed isn't officially written down and signed by members. Praise the Lord for those who have dared to think for themselves and had the courage to challenge certain things. Truth always welcomes such!

Oh, and just saw your question on my page. :) Things going quite well. Still got a job and job seems secure for the moment, so in these times that's a lot to be thankful for! Got a WONDERFUL wife and three awesome kids which keep us busy and stress us out, but wouldn't change it for nuttin! All is well with the congregation here. Starting in '09 we'll have a full-time supported elder. That is like so totally in the Bible, yet I've never seen a congregation actually do it! So yeah, lots to be thankful for and all is going good. Hope all is well with you and yours! :)

So glad to hear it. :) Be safe. Say Hi to my friends at Alief if you go there.

People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.

Jesus demonstrated this great truth by His actions time and again. Loving the lost is a far more effective evangelistic methodology than lecturing the lost.

charlies_angel

Amen! Hope you are all well. I think about you often.

anutty

Very True!

headocurls

incredibly true, especially since many Christians use the fact that since we are not lost that we are better and use this excuse to treat them horribly. Loving and caring are the strongest tools we have and really is how we are supposed to treat everyone.

No foolin', none of us have escaped it! 10-24-08 06:41am CST

Ever been totally offended by someone whose hurt you with their tongue? Gossiped or slandered about you? I have. And then I act like "How could they?" Haha, as if I'd never, huh? Oh yes I have, I am guilty, guilty, guilty. The passage below tells us that none of us are innocent of another persons pain. We inflict it with the small member of our tongue, all of us, except one. I humbly and sadly admit my own guilt. I've hurt many, many people in my 47 years.

We must realize whenever anyone has hurt us that they are subject to the same failures as we are. They are not perfect and neither are we.

(Jas 3) Be not many of you teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment. For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. Now if we put the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. But the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God: out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter? Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither can salt water yield sweet. Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. This wisdom is not a wisdom that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and that you remember to walk in the Spirit.:) Pray for help from above, it will be given you!

never_trust_a_gnome2

I know I am guilty as well. It is extraordinary how the tools we are given can turn into the shackles that bind us. i.e. our tongue/choice of words

headocurls

If We Are The Body lyrics

It's crowded in worship today As she slips in trying to fade into the faces The girl's teasing laughter is carrying farther than they know Farther than they know

But if we are the body Why aren't His arms reaching? Why aren't His hands healing? Why aren't His words teaching? And if we are the body Why aren't His feet going? Why is His love not showing them there is a way? There is a way

A traveler is far away from home He sheds his coat and quietly sinks into the back row The weight of their judgemental glances Tells him that his chances are better out on the road

Jesus payed much too high a price For us to pick and choose who should come And we are the body of Christ

Jesus is the way

71lespaulcustom

Is this a hymn or a contemporary praise song?

missysnapp

I love that song.

chelstee

Ironic. This was stuck in my head today. Even more ironic: I've only heard the song once in your car on the way to Austin.

megs

I looove the lyrics of this song.
