i had so much fun at the glenn miller orchestra christmas concert. for those of you who aren't familiar with glenn miller, he was a big band/swing band director in the 40s who had loads of number 1 and top 10 hits. some include, tuxedo junction, in the mood, string of pearls, etc. well he decided to go into the airforce and was first based at maxwell airforce base in MONTGOMERY, AL! Maxwell airforce base has a war college that all branches of hte military go through to be trained on technical stuff. not sure what all that entails. anyway, glenn miller band is one of my favorite bands. he was put as an officer and headed up the airforce military band and toured all over europe for quite a bit. he was flying over to normandy france to do a concert for the boys a few days ahead of ht eband to set things up and his plane disappeared over the english channel. no one was evre heard from again that was on that plane. side note that is cool in this story is that his wife LOVED the song LITTLE BROWN JUG. Glenn miller himself actually HATED the song. HOwever, since it was in the plans to do this anyway, his band went ahead and carried on hsi wishes. ON his Christmas eve broadcast a few weeks after his plane disappeared, the radio broadcaster said this was a special request that glenn miller wanted to do for his wife and said to tell her he loved her very much. he had his band play little brown jug for her over hte radio. such a sweet sentiment.

a few years later, the military made the honorary glenn miller band called the airmen of note. they still play today and go on tour. the airmen of note are form all over the US and the piano player we saw was from canada. The concert was fantastic and i couldn't have loved it more.

in 1954 or 53 there was a movie made staring JUNE ALYSON and JIMMY STEWART called THE GLENN MILLER STORY. for those of you who have not seen this, i suggest getting it TODAY and watching it. glenn miller seemed to be a stand up guy and a great american patriot, and a wonderful musical talent.

    That sounds like a concert I would love! Didn't know about the honorary band. I, too, am a fan of Glenn Miller, but I'm pretty sure you already knew that.........and I've seen that movie and it is good.
