Request for Support :)

The post you are about to read is only one report from one Christian. I pray that you not only consider my journey in your prayers and support, but also investigate the numerous participants in Godʼs mission that immerse themselves in bringing the love of Christ to this broken and confused world. Millions of people pour out themselves daily in every situation in order to be beacons and ambassadors of Christʼs new life to all peoples. We must remember, however, that this is not only in foreign nations, but small rural towns in Iowa, inner-city communities in Philly, and large churches in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Christʼs love is a continuing revolution in every part of the
world that began 2000 years ago and continues on today. The symphony of Godʼs mission is playing everywhere; I only pray for the strength to pick up my bed and dance.

As a part of this dance, this summer, I and a group of 5-6 others are venturing to Malindi, Kenya with an experienced missionary, Mr. Jim Beck. Jim lived in Kenya as a missionary for 11 years and will be with us for three weeks in Malindi. One of Jimʼs goals is to eventually set up a study abroad program for LCU (Lubbock Christian University) where I go to school, and he is utilizing our presence and observations of Malindi in order to draft an official plan and proposal for the study abroad program. While in Malindi, Jim and another man will be running a series of bible classes and fellowship opportunities for the parents while the remainder of us will be planning and running a youth camp for the young who do not get opportunities for Christian training in a fun environment like church camp. We also have a few other projects there including working with the orphan home. The interesting thing about this orphan home is that it is very different from most orphanages in Africa; rather than being established and run by foreigners, this orphanage was established indigenously and is run by the people of the village. Anytime they receive more orphans, they build another home and place the children there, taking care of them as if they were there own. One of our projects with them will be taking the art and music that they make and bring it back to the United States in order to sell and send the funds back to them.

After spending the first portion of our trip (roughly 3 weeks) in Malindi, Jim will be leaving us because his grandchild will be born in Nairobi, Kenya this summer. He is leaving us to go where we wish, depending on what arena of mission we find the doors most open. Two of the main options available to us are in 1) Staying in Malindi working with the youth and the single mothers or 2) going to Nairobi, Kenya to work with an organization called Made In The Streets (MITS). For more information on the organization, please visit made-in-the-streets.org. From what I know, the organization is stationed in a compound within the ʻhoodʼ of Nairobi where homeless children roam the streets huffing glue, a hallucinogen which calms hunger pains. MITS pulls willing children off the streets into the compound in efforts of Christian education and rehabilitation. If a child shows enough promise and rehabilitation, they take they child out of Nairobi to a farm where the children are taught a trade and become interdependent members
of Christian community. Once the child ʻgraduatesʼ from the program, MITS even helps them set up micro-finance loans and plugs them in where their skills can be put into use.

Of course, all of these things are dependent upon Godʼs opening of doors for us to go and where He will allow us to go. With this in mind, we are making as many efforts as we can, as merely Christians, in order to collect enough money for this ministry in Africa and solicit faithful Christians to the efforts of ceaseless prayer and encouragement for this journey.

In order for this trip to occur, we have been informed that the plane tickets (round-trip) will most likely cost between $1600-2000. Each subsequent week that is spent there will cost roughly $200-300 a week. Dependent on the support of saints and sinners like you along with the mighty hand of God, my plan is to stay the entire summer (May 15-beginning of August, roughly 12 weeks). With all this estimated, the trip will cost at least $4000 (the lowest estimated cost) and at most $5600 (the highest estimated cost). As time goes on, the details will be more solidified, but for now we aim to each earn the highest amount of money. After each member of our group has received sufficient funding, any excess funds raised will go towards our efforts in ministering to the people of Africa. No profit will be made by us.

In the economical situation of America, it is understood that money is tight in many families. Because of this reality, we have developed different forms of support that may provide more options for delivering support to this ministry. First, you may choose to support the cause with a lump sum donation of any desired amount. Another of our other options is a monthly support in which you may pledge, $10, $20, $30, etc. each month until our departure; for example, if you chose to pledge $20 a month beginning in December 2009, that would cover the months of December through May, totaling at 6 months and $120. Either of these options would be a tremendous support to our efforts. On top of these two options, we absolutely solicit your ardent prayers for Godʼs hand in this journey, as well as asking for any encouragement from the Lord through you.

I present this to you with full expectancy of your support, whether that be monetarily or prayerfully. We ask that you would help us reach our goals in whatever ways possible. If you would like more information, I am more than willing to talk via e-mail, phone, or in person. Provided below are an address, phone number, and e-mail address where you can contact more or send funds. Thank you so much, and I pray that you will continue participating in Godʼs will for all of us.

Food for thought and soul

"Today when some Christians struggle with burnout and exhaustion, addictive overworking, unbridled production and consumerism, accumulating more things with less time to enjoy them, one antidote can be a renewed sense of Sabbath. Harmonious relations within all of creation are only achieved with the proper rhythms of creativity and rest, liberation and delight. Sabbath carves out a space so that we can enter the quietness of heart needed to be at one with the Creator and all creation. this is not empty time, but sacred space in which praise of God takes center stage."

Reid, What's Biblical about the Sabbath?

You Gotta Believe

Sir, excuse my rudeness
But I believe that I know somethin' that you don't
Because you are talkin' down to me, like you think I know nothing.
And I wont allow it, this promise prowess, though I respect you, even through the prejudice.
You're blind leadin' blind's not hard to see, yeah

You gotta believe
Oh yeah
Don't fear, don't break it
You gotta be free (Ah, Ah)
I hope your blinded eyes will see

You can ask me anythin'
I may not know the answers to everythin'
Nor I won't before I can do is speak from my heart
A vapid sentiment
And I won't be clever, with your endeavor
All tryin' to prove me wrong, I will remember
You're blind leadin' blind's not hard to see, yeah

You gotta believe
Oh yeah
Don't fear, don't break it
You gotta be free (Ah, Ah)
I hope your blinded eyes will see

You gotta believe
Oh yeah
D-Don't fear, don't break it
You gotta be free (Ah, Ah)
I hope your blinded eyes will see, Yeah

Ah Ah

Whatever the cost, whatever I lost
Whatever I gained, whatever I fought
I knew I was tested, and I am the furthest
From what you think it is worth it

You gotta believe
Oh alright
Don't fear, don't break it
You gotta be free (Ah, Ah)
I hoped your blinded eyes will see

You gotta believe
Yeah
D-D-Don't fear, don't break it
You gotta be free (You gotta believe)
Don't, don't let him hold you down

C'mon, c'mon, sing it

Whoah Whoah, Whoah Whoah, Whoah Whoah
Whoah Whoah, Whoah Whoah, Whoah Whoah

Yeah

Oh, I hope my eyes will see
You gotta believe
Whoah Whoah, Whoah Whoah, Yeah

"When humans should have become as perfect in voluntary
obedience as the inanimate creation is in its lifeless obedience,
then they will put on its glory, or rather that greater glory of which
Nature is only the first sketch." -- C.S. Lewis

When did you change to that WBYeats quote? I love it. "Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, enwrought with golden and silver light..."

Do You Feel?

If Christ loves unconditionally, then why do we put conditions on who we love? Why do we not love the homeless? Why do we not love Muslims? Why do we not love Barack Obama? And if we claim to love them, why aren't we showing them?
  • whatsyourconfession
Because we aren't striving to be like Christ. If we were, we'd be doing the above mentioned. God forgive my pride and take away the pedestal I stand upon.
