Second Coming

After every post on every page I've seen on Pleonast is an ad about the second coming. Do you see them, too? I guess we all just look past them. But in case anyone is reading them I just wanted to say that whoever is publishing them doesn't really understand the second coming. If you define the second coming of our Lord Biblically it will be the end of time. It could happen any day, but it hasn't happened yet. Just FYI.

Yes, I've seen them, too. Unless you are a Gold member on pleo, there will always be ads on your page. I think the ads you see are determined by keywords in your entries.

Actually, right now, right here on your blog the add below this entry that I see is for Capital One Credit Card. LOL!!! :-)

Yes, I see the ads, too. Currently, below are "get out of debt" ads! They are probably no truer than the others!

I have a minority view. Firstly, the phrase "second coming" is found no where in the NT. Second, the phrases, "the coming of the Lord" and "Day of the Lord", "coming in the clouds" all mean judgment. Everyone of us is going to have our "day of the Lord" because we will all go through judgment. I won't go into detail but I believe there is more of a millennialist view of the "end of time" in this brotherhood than brethren realize.

Yes, I don't see them either... maybe the best benefit of being gold. :-) But thanks for your clarification for all those who do see them!

NY Governors Are an Endangered Species

I'm not usually given to paranoia or conspiracy theories, but I'm feeling the hair come up on the back of my neck. Elliot Spitzer, seen as a reforming governor of NY, was forced to resign after being implicated in an extramarital affair with a prostitute. His replacement, Lieutenant Governor David Patterson, confessed to extra-marital affairs shortly after taking office. Seemingly heading off Spitzer's downfall. Patterson has been trying to balance the budget with little help from the legislature. Now he is accused of several sins and is being urged to resign. Maybe these are men unworthy of the office, or maybe something, it seems, does not like a reforming governor in NY. I have zero proof and don't know how to get any. But the odds of this happening to two successive governors is pretty slim. Just musing.
  • cyber_space_cadet
I've come to a similar line of thinking on this issue.

...I don't know, it sounds to me like two corrupt, sinful men both suffered consequences of their actions. I guess I don't see anything surprising about that.
    by engelishgentleman at 03/04/10 11:57PM
  • beavermom
I would be more of the opinion that sinful men are getting caught in their trespasses and suffering the consequences. I would guess it is more of the opposing party trying to implicate them in something so they can wreck their reputation and keep control. Satan IS the Father of lies, but I would not go so far as to say he is the one directly responsible. ANything a politician does in his private life doesn't surprise me. I have locally seen good Christian men get into political office, and totally go astray! The evnts you report are dissappointing, but not surprising.

NY is a strange place. For four years I lived in NJ across the river from the City. I did learned that 2 hours out of the City NY becomes a different world. West Point, the Catskills. I digress. It seems that the Dems are "paving the way" for their man. Cuomo, perhaps? You have to know that when they don't "circle the wagons" around one of their own there is a reason.

Each man's sins opened the door for their demise, but it bothers me that so many were ready to ride them out of town on a rail. I have a feeling that character assassination is the New York pastime.

Just noticed two State Police Chiefs have fallen in as many weeks. Reminds me of this verse:
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. (Galatians 5:14-15)

A Great Deal?

Here it is. You give me some money for an unspecified time and I'll pay you 1% annually. And if you want me to give you some money for an unspecified period of time I'll charge you 18% annually. I'll also impose a few fees at my discretion from time to time. How's that for a deal?

I don't expect any takers. People don't usually think this is a very good deal when I phrase it like this. But banks have been getting folks to fall for this deal since the 50's. When we deposit our money in a savings account they pay us about 1% annually. When we pay with their charge card they get 18%. It's a terrible deal but they make so much money from the deal they can afford to hire very creative people to promote it effectively and make it look attractive. Sometimes people who take the deal even think the banks are doing them a favor.

The whole thing frosts my donut. I don't have money to devote to preaching the message of foregoing credit cards. But I'll just give you two cents worth of free advice: Leave credit cards alone. If you've got credit card debt pay it off and get rid of the card. It's not clout, it's debt. Don't fall for it.

  • cyber_space_cadet
Well said! I hate credit cards. Even before I was a Christian I didn't like them. I'm a product of my father's insistence on fiscal responsibility. :)

Well, there is another way to look at it. We carry no credit card debt nor pay CC interest. The bill comes in, its paid in full. Pat says, "Its using their money for a month". I deal with some places that charge extra for credit card use. There I pay cash.

You're right that paying off the card in full each month is a good deal for the consumer. I have friends that are very disciplined and have done that for years without paying any interest or fees. But, the banks are banking on us slipping up and waiting to earn interest and fees when we do. Kind of bothers me that they are waiting to win when I lose. Just my opinion.

    Thank you. :-)

Curious about the first part of your post: certainly in general savings accounts are an unproductive place to leave one's money; what do you recommend as a superior saving solution (couldn't resist the alliteration)?
    by engelishgentleman at 03/02/10 11:55PM
  • kodiakmaster
Jonathan, I've heard ING, the bank with no branches, gives up to 3% on savings, but I haven't investigated. Savings accounts just don't pay much. If you've got enough savings to fund a CD, you get more interest when you can commit it for a definite term.

The Nature of the Beast

Lots of discussion from the Sea World tragedy. Yesterday an Orca killed a trainer. I just read an article on the chimp who mauled that women in MA a year ago. And do remember the tiger who mauled Seigfried or Roy, I can't remember which? And don't forget the SF zoo tiger that killed the boys that were taunting it. Steve Irwin and the ray?

I guess we'll always be willing to pay to see wild animals, and pay more if humans are close to them. And it must be thrilling to be next to them. Just remember that their nature, or essence as Aristotle called it, is different than ours.

We can get close to them, sometimes, teach them tricks, perhaps, give them human names, sure, but their nature is their nature and that doesn't change so easily. We would be better off, and safer, if we didn't pretend they were tame. If we respected their essence and didn't anthropomorphize them into what we hope they could or should be. Don't ya think?

Epic Date Fail

So my sweet bride and I went out for a date last night. Got a sitter for our youngest, the only one still at home. Chose P F Chang's for dinner, drove 30 minutes to the restaurant, arrived at 6 p.m. to find a wait of two hours and forty-five minutes! All the other nice restaurants around the Eastview Mall in Victor, NY, were just as busy. Couldn't believe it. I can't remember a wait that long ever. I don't think last night was any special occasion. Perhaps it's always that busy on a Saturday night. We haven't tried going out to dinner on a Saturday since we've been up here in NY. But it's New York State, not New York City.
We started driving and wound up at Denny's. I can't begin to describe how much less enjoyable Denny's was compared with P F Chang's. Now I know that a meal can be both filling and un-fulfilling.
Oh well. At least I had my first choice for companions. And getting some time alone with my girl was the real priority.
Got to plan the next date better. Poor planning promotes poor performance, ya' know.
  • engelishgentleman
Wow. That's crazy. Better luck next time. :-)

Next time get one of those buzzer thingies (so that you can leave the premises) and go catch a movie while you wait! :)

You're so right...even a *good* Denny's is NOT P.F. Chang's (only been once, but it was fabulous), but Jean...is STILL Jean. ;)

Pat and I have learned that if we don't want to wait, it is best to go to dinner between 4 and 5 PM and never go to Cracker Barrel after Sunday morning services. ^^^^She is right about "old people".

awe. sweet date night...even at Denny's. I thought PF Changs did the "call ahead" thing like Outback. Oh well. Hope you're both doing well.

On the rare occasions when I take my guys to dinner, we *always* go early - some time between 3 and 5:00 - for this reason, so not only "old people" have this plan. (Well, *I'm* old, but *they're* not! :P ) Also, sometimes the meals are actually cheaper earlier in the day.

Sounds like our Valentine's day dinner. Really wanted Olive Garden, 2 hour wait. PLan B-2 hour wait. Starving, stomach growling, ended up at Red Robin. Not very romantic, but good grub, full tummy and the love of my life with me and healthy!(he had a stroke in '07) Plus, RR was easier on his wallet! Life with the one you love, who serves God along side you is the best, isn't it?
