How I found God and peace with my atheist brother

A long but very interesting article. Peter Hitchens is the brother of militant atheist Christopher Hitchens.

Very interesting article. I recently saw an interview with Richard Dawkins, who like Christopher Hitchens, is another militant atheist. Dawkins made the statement that he was only interested in truth, and the reporter asked him if by this he meant scientific truth? Dawkins responded by saying "What other kind of truth is there?". The reporter then asked if this scientific truth that he is so deeply convicted in tells us anything about morality. Dawkins then had to quickly back track and admitt that perhaps there is also a moral truth, that is separate from scientific truth. Its interesting, and also disturbing, how the atheist will sometimes recongize the limitations of science in understanding this world, and yet attritbute this realm beyond science to nothing more than some vague "moral truth".

^ They can't have it both ways. They cannot claim a moral truth and at the same time deny a source of authority for that truth.

Is Everyone Done with Pleonast?

Several have commented on the fact that fewer and fewer posts and comments are appearing on Pleo. Does this mean that more are turning to Facebook and leaving Pleo behind? Most of us appear to have accounts on both and there is certainly more activity on FB. However, I find that Pleo lends to longer and more meaningful posts while posts of FB are brief and, dare I say, rather superficial (not all but most). I also understand that FB reaches a larger audience but I do like the "intimacy" of Pleo. Oh well, just thinking out loud.
  • oldrupert
I agree with you. A lot of what I see on FB are 'game' related or "I'm a fan of..." usually just some sentence. I still check both places.

FB is way too active for me, of course when you have an Aggie with ADD...well. I like Pleo much more than FB!

We use both (or I guess I should say mostly me b/c John only uses farmville and then doesn't do much else with the Internet..lol). But I use facebook to check to see everyone's day-to-day happenings...I skip over the ones that are ridiculous or have anything to do with games. I use pleo for my more down-to-earth and detailed happenings b/c I'm sharing the information with fellow Christians. I definitely don't open up like that on facebook. I've noticed that fewer postings are being put up on pleo and I hope that it's not coming to an end any time soon

She Is Worth Far More Than Rubies

I wonder if the inspired writer of Proverbs 31:10 had a particular woman in mind. If so, I think I know that woman. I will not mention her name because I'm sure it would embarrass her. But I am also sure that all will know of whom I speak. She is the epitome of the gracious and faithful woman. I love her because of the way she encourages others to be better by her sincere words and the example that she sets. Her thoughts seem to always be for the welfare of others.

Her life has not always been easy and I know she has suffered heartache through the years. However, if you were to meet her for the first time you would think she had the perfect life. Why? Because you will not hear her complain or dwell on misery.

She is the perfect example of a christian mother and grandmother. As an elder's wife she shows humility, patience and wisdom that makes her husband's task easier. Her home is always a welcome port to all who are privileged to visit. And visit they do. Whether her large family or her many friends, they all find love, warmth and comfort in her home.

I am blessed to have her in my life as a friend and sister in Christ. I hope to be the kind of person she is when I grow up.

Who is she? Who do you think she is?

What an Honor

The Obama Administration will be honoring the 43rd President of the United States (George W. Bush) by naming the gap between the tectonic plates beneath Haiti after him, the area will now officially be referred to as "Bush's Fault".

Saw this on a friend's Facebook posting.

Faith vs. Facts

Josh was needing some help following an encounter with a substitute Biology teacher. They are studying Evolution. The teacher made the statement that science is based on facts and religion is based on faith. The teacher then defined faith as believing something without any evidence. Here is what I told Josh:

1. Do not let the teacher define "faith" for you. Faith is the confidence one has in the reality or truthfulness of something not seen. This confidence/faith is based on evidence and is not blind.

2. We cannot function in this world without faith. For example:

Imagine that an individual is accused of a crime and you are sitting on the jury. You did not see the crime commited yet you are to judge whether the person charged is guilty or not guilty. Because you did not witness the actual crime you are going to make a judgement on something unseen. How will you make your determination? You will examine the evidence (witness testimony, physical evidence, etc.). Based on your acceptance of the evidence you will judge whether the accused is guilty or not guilty of this unseen event. Your faith/belief/trust in the credibility (or lack of) of the evidence gives you confidence/assurance in the validity of your judgement.

3. Finally, I suggested that he can "turn the tables" on the teacher with some simple questions. Has she or anyone else ever seen life arise from something not living? Is there any credible evidence that such has ever occured? If the answer is no (and it is) then one must accept a very fundimental tenet of Evolutionary theory on blind faith.

Has she or anyone else ever seen one species of animal turn into or give birth to an entirely different species? Again, if the answer is no (and it is) then another very funidmental tenet of Evolutionary theory must be accepted on blind faith.

Josh doesn't know if he will have the teacher again but at least he will be better prepared.

Just thought I would share this with you.

Great response. Its pathetic that religion (ie, Christ) can't be taught or discussed in schools, but "religion" (ie, evolution) is required doctrine.

^^That's what burns me. You can teach one view without restraints, but don't allow the opposing view. Good points for Josh.

Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the "evidence of things not seen." People who claim not to have "faith" have to have a lot of it to believe in evolution!

I like the book title "I Don't Have Enough Faith To Be An Atheist" by Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek. If you haven't read it I strongly recommend it.
